Womanly-sized riders, unite!

Great Thread!

Hi, All,

I haven’t been on the boards in ages and since I’m hoping to show a bit in unrecognized dressage shows this spring, I thought I’d take a quick look at the posts. I found this thread and I’m thrilled!

Thanks for all the great ideas. I feel the need to shop!

Have a fine evening, womanly women.

W W!

For Nix: If you’re looking for a jumping saddle and can find one of the old Crosby Equilibriums, they’re great. They went up to 18" and had a nice wide seat. You might look online at the used saddle places (Rick’s Heritage Saddlery, Bucks county, etc. etc.)

For Coreene: Is your new sig line related to Occam’s Razor? (My latin is … uh … a wee tiny bit rusty! I took latin for freshman year in high school which was toooooo many years ago to count) I love your sig lines by the by!

Related to Equissentials someone was asking about a couple of pages ago: Yes, they are “showable” - I got the cream ones and a cream saddle pad which scared my goofy horse! He’s used to the dark color pads I school in and I guess couldn’t wrap his tiny mind around White on his back. I mean … really!

However, Equissentials are not the sort of baggy, looser fitting material commonly preferred in the hunter ring a la Tailored Sportsmens.

Finally, did anyone else notice these really cool Wellie boots on the website Wellspotted recommended for hunting breeches??? Very pricey, but sturdy, warm, and ADJUSTABLE calf size. (I won’t be rushing to buy them, they’re out of the price range now, but definitely something to drool over and they wouldn’t even get wet!)

Short womanly rider in search for tall boots

I am only 5’1", I am having a very hard time finding a reasonably priced tall boots that fit. I am a size 8 with a 16" calf and measure 15" to the back of the knee.

Any suggestions?

So, luvs2ride79 mentioned the summer-weight version of these (Arete’s trail riding tights). Anyone else have them? Worth the exorbitant price? How do they compare to the Irideon Windpros? Because I got a pair of Windpros in the same size as my other Irideons, 2x, and could barely get them on, so I am still searching for winter breeches. But the pricetag on these has me kind of !

Thanks!

I rode in a friend’s Courbette Stylist Wide Seat and really liked it! I have been thinking of getting back into HUS (after I’ve lose another 30 lbs…) and I will definitely be looking into this saddle when I do. It was very comfy, supportive of my large rear end, and my ridding buddy says it’s great to jump in.

Another one I’m looking at is actually a treeless (GASP! I know, very untraditional…), a FreeForm. I have a Bob Marshall treeless that I use right now for trail riding and training in and I LOVE it! And better yet, so does my mare! We use a special Skito pad made just for treeless saddles, with a ThinLine. Her back is comfy and she gets less cranky, even after long 3-5 hour trail rides or taxing Dressage lessons (old German trainer, need I say more, lol). I have seen some pictures of FreeForms with riders, and thet look quite traditional. I’m also considering a Fhoenix GP.

I jump in a 19" Crosby Sofride, actually I use it for everything, jumping, dressage, trail riding, you name it! It’s a nice deep seat, secure, sort of “sticky” and definitely roomy!

Nix, I sent you a PM with a link to an ad for a Pessoa AO for sale in my area (not mine). Hope you find a saddle you like soon!

Wow! Thanks for all the suggestions… please keep them coming! I’m definitely looking for a close contact type (the horse I’m riding is a Hunter).

I just found this when I was searching… not what I’m looking for but someone might find it perfect - 19 seat, wide tree, Stubben Siegfried.

It is! The general translation for it is “All other things being equal, the simplest solution is the best.” And it is actually one I stumbled on in the “Modern Manners” column of The Times in London, which publishes on Saturdays and which is hysterical. www.thetimes.co.uk

Show Clothes Shopping

So I just went shopping for show clothes and bought the Hispar field boots, On Course side zips, a Kerrits ventilator shirt and a stock tie. I am hoping to do mini trials and maybe some events this summer and this stuff as well as the hunt coat and show shirt I already have should make me ready, providing that everything fits! I have a schooling show coming up on Feb. 17 and while my horse may not be totally ready, I want to look the part!:lol::lol:

Arete’s Trail Riding Tights
Thanks!
I bought the trail rider ultra tights and I love them. I ordered the straight leg version with the knee patch in tan. The patches are real suede. I was surprised, but you can actually launder them in your washing machine. You just can’t dry them in the dryer but they usually dry in one day on the line. The patches are larger than most knee patch tights but I enjoy it because it gives me more grip in the saddle. They are really generously sized. Make sure to check the size chart because they run really large. I wear the Irideons in 3X and these are much bigger than they are in size XL! The other good thing about these is that they don’t look so much like riding pants because they float away from your ankle as in a boot cut instead of clinging like tights. It makes my errands after riding less embarrassing. I would say go for it. I was very pleased with mine. The quality is quite nice. My only complaint would be that they are a tad long on me, but I am only 5 feet tall so every pair of bottoms is long on me regardless.

Thanks so much, Frnchgurl! I will have to come up with the money for these somehow…

Oh, and all you vest junkies:

Also, this is the best barn coat I’ve ever had, and now it’s on sale (Aaaargh! I paid full price! but I just got another one on sale to squirrel away for when the first one dies…):

I just have to rave about a couple of finds. I have never found riding breeches that truly fit me the way they should. Usually they are either just a little short in the crotch, too tight in the thigh or tight in the hips and big in the waist for me. For years I’ve simply ridden in stirrup pants as an alternative (schooling) and saved the one pair of true breeches I had for show (despite them not being a great fit or very comfortable…just tolerable).

Thanks to this thread, I ordered a pair of breechs from VTO. Their VTO knee patch. LOFF them. Just a tad long, but otherwise fit me beautifully and very comfy. Very reasonably priced (especially when I got them during their 25% off sale last month). I foresee ordering more in the future…and they come in a nice variety of colors too…not just black and beige! I am simply overjoyed at finding something at actually fits.

I also ordered a dressage saddle (Duett Fidelio) in …yes… Gasp  - a size 20 seat. It’s a deep seated saddle so I needed to go up in size, but it actually fits me!! I’ve lost 30 lbs since July (another 30 to go) but still needed the larger seat. I’ve been frustrated for years in having to ride in the more shallow seat because I couldn’t find a reasonably priced saddle that truly fit me. Best of all…it fits my horse better than any saddle I’ve ever had.

By the way…Duett makes a wide variety of saddles…including jump, trail, dressage and AP’s.

Love this thread. So many cool ideas and great information. Thanks for sharing everyone!

Have you tried Mountain Horse? I have the High Caliber Field Boots and they are very comfortable and fit my “round” calf with room. I am 5’2 with a 15 1/2 calf (of pure muscle ). They are a bit tall for me, though. Of course, as soon as I bought them, they came out with a dress version that comes in wide/short that would probably be perfect! Since I am just doing the lower levels of eventing, though, the field will have to do.

I want to know, too! I really want a dressage coat but don’t want to spend an arm and a leg for it. I usually need a 10 street size in blazers - I have broad shoulders, ample chest, small waist and not small hips or hiney. I am also short (5’2). Any short hour glass figures out there with dressage coat suggestions?

I am a mutant

What about freakishly tall but wide calf boots, among other things?? I am 6’0, I wear a 32 pant, but with a 34-35" inseam. My old field boots are old Cavallos that I picked up used at a tack shop. they are a ladies 11, with a 16.5" calf and they are 24" tall from floor to top. I am not a rich person and I can’t afford customs, but man, am I ever sick of boots, chaps, breeches being half a foot too short!! I ordered large tall Ariats, which are STILL too short! My saddle was custom ordered, and the search for a used one had just about killed me. Can’t find one to fit ANYWHERE!!! That and I have really big boobs, but a small-ish waist (Coke bottle my BF says:rolleyes:) so if I buy jackets to fit the boobs, I look like a giant square. If I buy to fit the waist, I look like I’m going to go sell it, as I’m busting out all over. I think when God was handing out bodies, I slept in, and got the bottom of the barrel one that got thrown together last minute:p:winkgrin::lol:

So I got a pair of Spanx NTW on eBay

The capri-length ones. It was just butt ass freezing cold outside that day (take into account when you read this that I am in So Cal and for me 52 degrees in the daytime is butt ass freezing cold), so I thought I’d wear 'em under my jeans for some extra warmth. Had to put on a belt because the jeans kept slipping down.

Boy oh boy, if you wanna smooth out your backside before wearing breeches, pop a pair of those capri-length Spanx on under them. Night and day difference! Spanx should hook up with a breeches manufacturer and do great riding pants with built-in Spanx.
