Womanly-sized riders, unite!

Okay, I just ordered one of the RJ dressage coats. I hope it fits!

I must figure out what to do about the tall-boot situation. I’ll let y’all know if I figure it out! Oh, which reminds me, there’s an ebay store–ranchwear something?–that has a few pairs of wide-calf Effinghams that are not quite wide enough for me, so if anyone needs a 16-17" calf, check them out. I found them by searching for “wide boots” (remove quotes) under sporting goods>equestrian>english, I think it was.

Spring is on my mind because I can’t ride (barn is quarantined because of strangles:() so I’m trying to look ahead to show season…

So, does anyone have any opinions about what show helmets are the coolest in summer? I ride dressage, need a new velvet or fake velvet show helmet and I don’t want to pay for a GPA… I’d spring for a Charles Owen if it really were cooler. I’m a real hot-head and I sweat like crazy as it is and menopause isn’t making it any better. If only Tipperary made a show helmet…

Since grooming my horse twice in 24 hours was out of the question, to distract myself, I indulged in some retail therapy today. I tried on a bunch of vests on sale and got yet another black vest–the Ariat XL’s are cut quite generously. (The Aristas and Ovations are not!) I also bought an XL Ariat windbreaker that comes in that nice robin’s egg blue and lime green.

Horse-Rider-Etc?

Anyone ever ordered from Horse-Rider-Etc?

I was thinking of getting the hispar boots from there but dont know anything about the place. They seem to have two websites?!

Thanks

My biggest problem is finding boots to fit me. I have big calves from biking, running, and just big calves.

I need a good pair of boots that will fit my one calf. I am trying to break in those boots that I have, but in the summer I will need bigger ones. My legs swell with humidity.

I have lymphedema in my right leg.

Boo-urns the Hispars are like 6" too short!! I just can’t seem to justify spending a grand on custom boots that I’ll wear 10 times a year:eek::no: If I can ever manage to get my ass back in the show ring that is

I have the field boots - I like them - had to have some modifications done to them by my local boot repair - (they are straight, I am curvy ) but overall, I’ve been happy with them. They could be a smidge taller, but then… I’m AmazonWoman… and only a custom boot is going to get me everything I need.

I wear them to school and show in - they’re holding up decently - for the price, I’d say it’s a good buy.

That said… I am going to buy some nice semi-customs this spring, in a more stiff dressage boot… but for now, these are fine.

Good luck!

Yes, they DO get the job done under the whites…however…

Don’t wear 'em on a hot day, because sweat + nylon = Those babies can draw blood if they crease up and rub you the wrong way. Had a bad experience with them last summer and now the dilemma between looking good and feeling good is tougher than ever!
I’ve been wearing Under Armour Heat Gear compression shorts under my breeches. Very smoothing. You definitely want the 7" inseam for riding. The Men’s “long” shorts fit shapely curves quite well, and cover right down to the knee.

So we have the lower half under control but…

What about the top!!! For those of us that are…ahem busty, what is the best bra?? I use 2-3 bras to keep myself pancake’d. It’s not enjoyable to be doing a sitting trot and some of the guys in the stands nodding along with me:o:uhoh:

I have had good luck with sturdy Playtex bras, ugly but supportive, and wide straps not killing your shoulders.
Read through the post for Enell bras, they are riding specific, and available through a few websites.

This is the best thread ever!

Thanks for all of the helpful information! I started riding a couple of months ago (at the tender age of 48!) and am doing my first show this weekend! I am so excited I can hardly stand it! And, to top it off, thanks to this thread, I was able to navigate through the show clothing and tall boot issues for womanly sizes! Ya’ll are great!

JustABay,

DEFINITELY Enell. You’ve no idea how much it pains me to pay more for a bra than for my breeches (and hell, for that matter, more than the last 2 pairs of BOOTS! ) BUT, it is worth every penny.

I used to wear an underwire, under a Playtex “posture” bra, with a sports bra on top… and still had some movement. With the Enell, I can sit trot. I can do jumping jacks. I can even run.

Takes a little getting used to, as there is very little stretch, but now I feel like I’m not wearing anything if I ride without it. Great for posture. Comfortable for riding and working, just not loooong drives (I drive 5 hours to my lessons–I can’t put it on at home, nor can I wear it home, I do have to accomodate for that… )

I have to think that it is actually better for your tissue as well. I can’t imagine that bouncing is all that great for breasts…

So yeah, I own 3 now, the first one is getting old enough (5 years?) that I need to replace it. Worth EVERY PENNY. I promise.

I have to agree with the comments on the Enell bra. Best ever. Ever. I get mine from Title9, which incidentally also has lots of good supportive stuff for non-riding wear as well.

And where might I find this Enell bra? Also, how much are we talking, pricewise? Although it’s probably worth it, and hopefully I will lose the ‘fan club’ that likes to watch my dressage lessons!!!

Title 9, SmartPak, just online (just search Enell bra) Expect $55 or so retail. Sizing runs VERY TRUE to the charts. Trust them.

I have gotten several via Ebay in the $35-45 range. Some have fit defects which actually make them fit better, (most common being bottom band anywhere from 1/2"-1" under size) some have very slight imperfections (which I’ve yet to find) and others are first quality but there for whatever reason. I like the seconds because I’m going to beat the hell out of them anyway… so who cares if there’s some sort of snag or mark in the satin?

Spinoff–anyone tried the new “light” one that SmartPak shows? I don’t know why I’d pay more for less… but then again there are times I wouldn’t mind wearing an Enell to work, but it’s a bit… robust… for 10 hours of sitting…

COTH My horse Space

Criss and Twinkletoz…Sorry I havent replied but last week I found out that I am going to have neck surgery…they will remove 2 discs from my neck then place a plate over the vertebrae to keep things stable…Basically that means no riding for 12 weeks at least and no jumping for 1 year, Its very dishearting since I finally found a hunt coat that fits! Love RJ Classics! Yep got the whole ensemble coat, boots, breeches finally together, now I’m not sure I’m showing this year at all.Ugh!

My Horse Space…At the top of each forum index is a thread about the new COTH My Horse Space Pages. Basically its a My Space page for the horsey set started by COTH. They also have groups you can join…so thats why I started the Womanly-sized Riders group. Last I looked there was quite a few members. I couldnt start it by not acknowledging twinkltoz for starting the original thread that has grown to 54 pages!! Whoo Hoo

Its a sticky at the top of the off course forum

Well…cool!

You poor thing, I am so sorry! Fingers crossed that it all goes perfectly and that you are back to your old self in no time.

ProChaps!!!

I finally got a pair of ProChaps half chaps. XL calf and a glorious 19" tall. They fit and look amazing. I have 19" calves or so at this point, and the XL fit. They even come in an XXL for anyone with even larger calves.

does happy dance

They are beautifully made, and have a fairly slimming line to them. Worth every penny ($140). Made in Canada. Come in 1" height increments from 15" to 19". I ordered them through my local tack shop.

AND they wear like IRON!!! Used to go through two or more chaps a year (for Billy) and the last pair of Pro Chaps lasted a year and a half before they were considered to tattered to be comfortable. Of course bought another pair for him for Christamas…we will see how long these last! (he can ride anywhere from 2 to 7 horses a day so they get well worn!) Worth every penny for sure!
