Thanks Tabatha (hee hee hee on the farm name)! Sadly, the 3x tights that are on sale for $19.99 won’t work for me. I guess I should be glad!
I hate trying to find shirts and coats that fit. I am busty so to fit that, I look huge everywere else. I also have junk in the trunk and wear the ariat sports. they are a little tight, but cant affort the TS.
I wanted to tell you about my Nittany boot experience.
I order a pair in September (beginning) and finally got then in the beginning of December.
Luckily I never let the Visa charge go through (not until I had received and OK’ed the goods), cause boots had 3 problems:
Hole in Heel of boot
Too large - I wear a size 8 foot - and would have had to wear HEAVY winter socks for these to fit. Since I live in Florida that would not work.
Zipper came apart when I went to put my spur on.
So I do NOT suggest using them. I returned the boots today.
Sorry, I did not see this before. I bought the Hispar ones on eBay, so they were direct from the company. Excellent quality for the price; actually, had I paid $350 for them I still would have been impressed with the quality.
BTW, if you get zip boots and the top part might be a bit tough to pull up the first time or two, lay on your back with your legs in the air (always a great position, ha ha), and zip them up that way. After a few times that way and wearing them a bit, they’ll work fine the normal way.
I bought a wonderful 18/24 dressage coat on eBay a few weeks ago, brand new with tags still on. Eighty bucks.

How I wish I had known this when I first bought my half-chaps! (seriously, I really wish I had)
Who knew that on your back with your legs in the air consitituted multi-tasking?!

On a horse with your legs in the stirrups (otherwise known in my world as “dressage”) most definitely is multi-tasking!
I don’t know if I should add to this post or post a new post–since I was the last one to post here I guess I’ll just add this:
I am feeling really depressed right now so I came over here for some sympathy and support.
I’ve just been reading a thread about Dover Saddlery and low-rise breeches, where the people posting are all complaining and exclaiming that they can’t find breeches in their sizes (size 14 or 36 seems to be the largest size). They are posting that they aren’t “big” but could stand to lose weight, they seem to think they are huge if they wear a size 10, 12, or 14. I started reading the thread thinking it might be like this one, and even (gasp! apologies to you!) referred them to this great thread
But I just feel really depressed right now because I don’t want to imagine how they would respond if I posted there what size breeches/tights I’m looking for.
I just want to say again that I like this thread and I’m glad all of us are here.
And I hope this thread is still active! :)
Another word on da boots. Having been on my back, legs in the air, a few times while putting them on, and getting bored with that, I - duh - grabbed the boot pulls and they flew on.
I think I’m going to need a pair that is one size smaller pretty soon, but that’s fine, for $212 including the shipping I can’t complain! So here’s a repeat of a hearty recommendation for the Hispar field boots from eHimalaya on eBay.
Awww, me too. I’m a hefty girl (thanks loffy breakups, light and sweet coffee, quitting smoking, and those fab nachos from Applebees Freaking SUPER)
I tried putting on my half chaps today and it’s a definite NO GO. I feel so icky. But, I won a one month membership to a local gym, so I’ll prolly test drive that soon. It was just super depressing. And to top it off, I was riding and a friend stopped by and said hi. Then he said “Is your horse going to get any bigger???” “No” The implication was there. It sucked, he backpeddaled and we both just felt akward.
Breeches just make it worse. I’m with the “if I get the regular cut ones they go over my boobs” group so I like to try the low rise ones. They sit AT my wasit. But the regular cut ones leave me feeling like I have “butt in the front.” :sigh::o Far cry from my 120lb self when I was in shape and happy.
Coreene, that’s awesome. I sooo need a pair of boots, and that price is absolutely in my budget. Barely.
I don’t even want to be super skinny. Just in better shape and not flabby!! And no butt in the front!!! Ok, that might be an exaggeration a wee bit, but still… You guys are awesome though and I’m glad I looked at this thread!

Ugh! You were lucky. They’ve had my money tied up since JUNE. Multiple mistakes/quality control issues (wrong size, mismatched leg sizes) and phonecalls where I was promised it would be dealt with and given excuses. Now their toll free number seems disconnected, and I’ve switched to email so I at least have some record of correspondence, but aside from one “I’ll check with the (manufacturing) plant” reply, I’ve had no response, either via email or via eBay messenger thingie.
I suppose I should take it up with my credit card company, but it’s been a long time. I still have a pair that are (unbelievably) way too wide for me, and are way bigger than the measurements were supposed to be, but the owner told me to hang onto them (unworn) until a replacement pair comes. I am reluctant to send these back and demand a refund until I hear from them because I fear then I’ll be out both the money and an eBayable pair of boots. I’ve already had to pay the return shipping on other boots they sent that didn’t fit.
Ugh!
It’s a shame, really, because they are very nice boots for the money, but at this stage I really wouldn’t recommend them.
Wellspotted, have no fear. There are plenty of us here! When I started riding, I wore a size 12, and had trouble finding breeches that fit. What the??? I am now larger than that, and thank goodness for the companies that are making breeches in plus sizes. Too bad that even though I wear size 1X pants, I have to order 3X breeches! Either I"m weird size-wise when it comes to breeches, or the manufacturers sizing is way off.
I agree with those who say that low-cut doesn’t = obscene. Depending on how you are built, low-cut might fit better.
The world is full of size 10 women who want to be size 6, size 14 who want to be size 10, size 18 who want to be 14… You get the idea. It’s all relative. I want to be thinner, but I bet a 300-pound woman would rather weight what I do. On a humorous (maybe) note, I found a pair of jeans that was left in the bathroom at the barn and was trying to figure out who to return them to. They are a size 4. They probably belong to one of the women who was complaining about gaining weight after eating a cookie at the Christmas party. (And I say that with all good humor, because I realize even some thin people have to pay attention to what they eat.)
Yesterday I got the Devonaire polartec tights I ordered from tackoftheday.com. I was so excited, because they were like $25! I wear the regular Devonaire tights in XL and they fit fine…but these were like children’s XL!!! No way in hell will I ever be able to wear these…that’s #3 in my pile of unwearable riding pants.
Hi,
I’m in this sort of lovely in between limbo area where the regular sized stuff is mostly too small and the plus sized stuff is mostly too big. It’s seriously frustrating. I’m also short waisted and have a big bust. Seriously, finding riding clothes is a PITA.
I got a GREAT hunt coat at Horse Rider, Etc. It’s the plus sized one, comes in a really nice brown/tan colour. I love it… and it has some stretch which really makes it comfortable when jumping.
And I got the hispar boots, which are now sent back to the store for them to send to their boot person to be taken in and shortened.
For showing I wear Ariat Sport Low Rise Breeches which fit okay in the 36 - could be more comfortable… but the quality isn’t great. One pair I’ve worn TWICE and the crotch is already looking pilly and weaker. And I will say I’m not stressing these things really - the only place their are uncomfortable is the waistband. I am thick waisted.
For everyday breeches, I haven’t found ones I really like yet. The On Course ones are toooo longggg in the waist and leg but they fit me around the waist. I just tried ordering a few different ones, tuff riders, on course low rise and riding sport. We’ll see if any fit well.
I got some good show shirts on Ebay made by some no name place called White Thunder I think… but they had fun colours and the a nice shirts for a good price. I also got some fancier ones at Equestrian Collections - I had better luck calling them and speaking to a very helpful person rather than trying to order from their site.
Anyways… it’s been nice reading this thread, definitely some good pointers!
I bought the polartec tights a few years ago in XL, and there was no way I was going to get into them. I traded them to someone for a riding lesson!

After the age of 35, nearly all thin people are thin BECAUSE they watch what they eat. I’m a size 10 and happy with it. I count every calorie and usually eat the same thing every day so that I don’t have to count. At dinner with my larger friends, they’re ordering three courses including pasta and I’m having the salad. A cookie is a very, very special day.
Can this thread NOT turn into a discussion of how to stay thin? We’ve managed to stay on topic for 7 pages.
I have followed this thread for a while and held my tongue for that long before contributing. Mostly, I was insulted by the implication that “womanly-sized” meant “large”. I don’t know why that euphemism should be acceptable.
I can sympathize with not finding clothes that fit and all the other issues discussed here. I find it hard to find clothes that fit, but for other reasons.
If “womanly” means big boobs, that’s one thing. If “womanly” means big everything, that isn’t womanly. It’s just big.
If your problem is finding clothes that fit your big boobs, then fine. If your problem is that you can’t find any breeches or show shirts small enough for you, then this thread isn’t for you. If you don’t like it, don’t read it.
Otherwise, let’s keep the discussion to either vents about clothes etc or helpful hints on where to buy them. Those of us who are big know we’re big and we don’t need lectures about it.
Just ignore it. Some days she eats only a peach and a piece of cheese. Her own words. Not that there’s anything wrong with that at all either, but Twinkle I totally agree. The thread isn’t about diet tips.
So is it me or are the Shapelys really longwaisted?
It’s not just you!! Can anyone recommend breeches for us shortwaisted folks??
