Womanly-sized riders, unite!

Ooh, I’d love some European breeches! :D:D
I have some Devon Aires for schooling but I need some for show.

What color undershirt should I wear[for a schooling show. Just w/t/c.] if my jacket is green?

Looking for winter breeches that are on sale right now in sizes for Rubensesque equestrienne. I don’t just want them for horse riding but for bike riding to the barn. They need to be wind resistant and warm, since a bike doesn’t generate heat.

Suggestions?

I would just get actual cycling pants. They run cheaper than breeches, have appropriate padding, and since I do cycle to the barn in my riding breeches occasionally so I don’t have to change it can be awkward to dismount when the full-seats stick to the bike’s saddle.

You can find Pearl Izumi stuff pretty cheap on e-bay.

Here’s why I like my knee patch riding breeches for cycling to the barn.

  1. Nothing to catch in the chain
  2. If I do want to saddle up and ride, I can. All I have to do is change the shoes to half chaps and paddocks.
  3. I know my breeches fit; cycling garb is usually for toothpick sized people. I’m apple shaped with a derriere and thighs to match.

OMG!!! just got my Horka breeches and I’m going straight over to get a pair of the full seats.

I’m ordering down one size as the ones I got are just a smidge too large and I’m actively trying to lose some weight.

They are lovely and comfortable. As a person who has always been on the larger side finding a quality breech and not having to squeeze my big butt into a pair of mens breeches to get the right waist size is an absolute joy.

Okay, I just have to tell all of you… over the past few days I have read this ENTIRE thread! I’m a bit cross-eyed but completely in awe-- you all ROCK!!!

Here’s my deal… 28 years experience in the saddle, have always been “plush,” eventually got way too plush and had gastric bypass surgery a few years ago. I lost a bunch of weight and I’m down to what will hopefully be my “normal” weight from now on (about 200), which I am completely happy with, but it’s left me very strangely shaped, to say the least. From the waist down, I pretty much have a “skin suit,” haha… plastics would help, but a.) I’m too cheap, and b.) it would put me out of commission for too long to heal, so I’m sucking it up.

Luckily, I can wear the upper end of normal-sized clothes now, except for my calves-- oh sweet jesus they are enormous, 18" if I’m standing, 19+" when sitting. That, coupled with the fact that I’m short (5’3") with VERY short lower legs makes finding boots/chaps nigh on impossible. I measure 14.5" to the back of my knee!!

I did manage to find suede-and-velcro half-chaps to fit at my local tack shop (they have a wonderful employee who’s also had GBP), but I’ve made a new goal for myself… I’ve always been fascinated with fox hunting, so I decided that, what the hell-- life’s too short; I’m going to try this fall. Yay me!

Problem is, now I’m going to need “real” riding clothes, not just schooling breeches and my grungy half-chaps…

I ordered a coat pattern from Suitability, so I’m going to have my seamstress work on that for me. But trying to find boots has been a major dilemma… I honestly cannot afford full customs, so I’ve been hunting high and low for XX-wide boots that I maybe hopefully can have tailored to fit.

I think I might have found a pair from Nittany Boots-- I emailed her about semi-custom options, and it just so happened that she had a pair that were returned because the factory transposed the measurements on the order-- the boots are 18" calf, 16" high. They should be arriving any day now, and I can’t tell you how hard my fingers are crossed that they might actually come close to fitting.

Here’s my question… I really would prefer not to have zippered boots, and this pair from Nittany are no-zips. I’m figuring I’m probably going to have to alter them somehow-- is it possible to have GUSSETS put in, instead of a zipper?

PS-- I love love LOVE all things Irideon-- I own 3 pairs, and if I could afford it, I wouldn’t wear anything but. They’re just so comfy for me, I adore them completely…

Ovation vs. Cotton Naturals?

Has anyone tried both the Ovation and Cotton Naturals “shapely” Breeches?

How do they compare?

Looking at the Ovations for a good price… but only have experience with the Cotton Nat’ls, in which a 36 fit fine, with a wee bit 'o room to spare these days…

Anyone?

PS: CNVH–you’re in luck: gussetts are one of the cheapest, easiest alterations, a normal local cobbler shoudl be able to do a good gusset for you. Good luck on teh returns–sounds perfect!

TallyHo Boots

I LOVE this thread!!! Thank you so much ladies!

I’m looking tall for boots that FIT and came across Tallyho Equestrian Outfitters. The boots sell for $370 and they custom make them to your measurements.

http://gotallyho.com/custom-riding-boots-c-21.html

Has anyone tried these boots? I’d love some advice before making this purchase.

Thanks!

Well, I tried on field boots at my local tack shop today… disaster. They were supposedly 18" calf but they wouldn’t zip more than a third of the way up, even though my calf measured 18". WTF?! They were also at least 2" too tall, even factoring in for drop. Ugh.

My Nittanys still haven’t arrived. At this point I have no delusions that they will fit out of the box, but I’m hoping they’ll be workable.

But I DID try on some hunt coats… I found a drop-dead gorgeous one, black, Devon Aire size 20, that fits like it was tailored for me. I am in love!! AND it was only $79… the clerk suggested I wait for the spring sale in a couple of months, when it will be an extra 10% off. I can’t wait!!

I’m still going to hold onto the pattern from SuitAbility to maybe have my seamstress make me a heavier-weight coat for colder weather hunting, but I am totally jazzed that I found a great coat!

cnvh- I totallt feel your pain with the field boot thing.

I am about the same as you, 5"3’ about 195 and have 17.5" calves. I am having the hardest time find field boots to fit my calves. I have been checking out ebay for boots that may fit, but I haven’t had great luck. The one time I did find some boots, I got outbid by $2 . What I plan on doing is bring my boots to a cobbler in my area and having them put some elastic in between the boot and the zipper. I am hoping that the alterations will give me an extra inch and also give me some room on those hot days for some swelling.

I found Ariat challenge field boots for 185.95 at 123tack.com and the measurements are close enough that I don’t anticipate any issue with the cobbler.

I would love to hear about anyones experiences with the Tally Ho boots. Customs fro $370 would be fabulous:D

I have 18" or so calves and my left is larger than my right. Mountain Horse High Rider II dress boots will zip up, though not in the afternoon/evenings!

I think Tallyho boots have been discussed on here before and I think the reviews were not great.

I don’t have calves…I have heifers! :D:D:lol:
Dee

I really like my Equitector tall boots. My calf is around 18" but I haven’t been able to get into any of the Mountain Horse boots, I think because my ankle is relatively slim and my calf swells out like a big old bulb…

http://www.equitector.com/

They are from the UK. All together, including shipping and customs (which was an outrageous $175 here in Canada), they cost me about $500 Canadian but you may have less onerous customs duties in the States. The shipping was fairly reasonable, I thought, since they came from overseas. I wear them nearly every day and I’ve had them two years. They’ll need a zipper replacement soon but still look good as new otherwise. They have elastic on either side of the zipper so adjust well to swelling in summer and heavier breeches in winter.

They also have steel toes which have protected me on quite a few occasions… And they are fairly comfy to walk around in.

Tally no for me.

TallyHo Boots

Thanks Ladies.

I have looked at the Mountain Horse boots before, but they won’t work as the height is 18" and I have 14" legs.

Equitector could be an option, but it doesn’t look like they make field boots. That wouldn’t be the end of the world, but field boots would be best as I’ll be jumping.

Thanks for letting me know to steer clear of Tallyho!!!

Any curvier ladies have experience with Irideon low-rise breeches? I just won a pair of Irideon cadence low-rise KP breeches in XL on eBay, obviously haven’t tried them on yet… I have a few pairs of Irideons in XL and they fit fine, but never low-rise. Am I deluding myself?

(If they don’t fit, anyone else want them? Otherwise it’s off to craigslist…)

Yup. I do.CNVH! I love low rise, cause Im not the tallest waisted person, so they fit me kinda normal

Doggone, I was gonna ask for them :). Seriously, though, if you’re short waisted the low-rise is about right. I have a pair of the regular and they feel like they come up to my armpits! I’m not over-happy with the clarino fullseat, though - I love my FITS and wish they were cheaper!

My Ariat dress boots were just a smidge tight, but when the zipper broke on them I took them to my local cobbler and had a higher quality zipper put in, and it added 1/8" to the calf width, and now they’re just right.

By the way, this is off the subject, but I’ve actually lost some weight! I’ve been wearing a pedometer, and on the days I feed (6 days a week) I’ve been averaging around the recommended 10,000 steps, which tells me how hard it really is to do that, because I feel like I do a LOT of walking when I’m feeding/turning out.

When they arrive, if they don’t fit, I’ll let ya know. (I’m too much of a cheapskate to put them back on eBay and pay fees…) I’m short, but very “hippy.” So we’ll see.

Still no boots yet from Nittany, and it’s been a week. If they don’t show up today, I’m going to call and see if/when they were sent…

VEST ALERT:

Ariat Woodside Vest up to XXL from Big Dee’s for $36!
