surprisingly, some of the less expensive boots come in bigger calf sizes. Dover carries the ones I buy…and now I don’t see a catalog anywhere, of course.
I wear the 19h 17in calf and they fit well…I do the Murphy’s Oil soak to fit them. They last about 4 or 5 years used everyday, which I see from a post on the H/J forum is about average for expensive but off the rack boots.
I did put gussets in my current pair, it lessens the leg cramps getting them off. A shoe repair shop did it for $40 and did a nice job. If I come across a catalog I will add the brand, but I think there are only one or two with actual wide calf sizes. The others think that 14in is a wide calf!

What is the Murphy’s Oil soak? I need to stretch my Mountain Horse boots just a bit. I was going to try to find some boot stretch spray, but this sounds interesting. Would it hurt the zippers?

Comment on Kerrits Ventilator shirts

I ordered three last year in 2X - a white, the chili wave and camel…they were everything I could have asked for…couldn’t have asked for a better fit.

For some unknown reason (at least to me), my white ventilator shirt disappeared. I’ve searched high and low to no avail. So…since I was placing an order with SmartPak anyhow, I ordered two more ventilator shirts…one in white and one in the powder - again in 2X. They came, I looked at them, put them away for a hot day.

So I pulled out the Powder colored ventilator shirt yesterday, put it on and was dismayed to find it was too small. Long story short, I laid the Powder shirt (and the white one) on top of the Chili Wave and the Camel and it was at least an inch on each side smaller! Stupid me…I can’t find the invoice. I haven’t done it yet, but I’ll be sending a note to both SmartPaks and especially Kerrits!. VERY disappointing.

Ladies,

I got my Foxy jacket (Fuller Fillies). It is gorgeous and very well made for the price (came in just over $220 Canadian taxes included). The fuschia lining is stunning. The only quibble I had was the fake pockets–I like real ones to stuff my gloves, keys, etc. in.

The fit is a bit boxy on me (I ended up with a 24) but I think that is more a function of my body type (big shoulders and boobs and smaller waist) than the cut. It is a bit large in the waist and hips. I will have them and the sleeves taken in.

But overall it is gorgeous and I will be ordering some of the plaid breeches.

That sounds fabulous. I’ve been eyeing the jacket since my old one isn’t suitable anymore - it fits, but it was bought by DH who has no idea what is and isn’t appropriate for which disciplines.

I’d love to see a photo when the tailor is through with it!

That’s really interesting. I had ordered a few of the shirts at the beginning of last year (or maybe it was the previous year) and they fit well. Last year I ordered some from Tack of the Day (I think that was it, because I remember they were a bargain) in the same size and they were too big. They are still sitting on my shelf since T of the D doesn’t take returns.

To stretch boots some, put some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle, spray it really well on the inside of the boot/half chap where it needs to relax and then put them on and wear until dry.

Rubbing alcohol is what is in those expensive aerosol cans of shoe stretch stuff.

If you could only buy one pair of breeches right now and they had to be under $100 which pair would you buy for summer riding? I wear a sice 18 and I do not have an hourglass figure. I’m more of an apple.
Thanks for your input. I think the hardest part of being plush is not being able to try things on because you have to order everything.

I’m really looking forward to the suggestions on this one. I’m now the proud owner of three pairs of breeches I can’t ride in! One was so cheaply made that they are already falling apart after two rides. The other pair is of such slippery material that I felt like grease on an ice cube while riding. The last pair is a from Saddlebums, the ultimate full seats and I feel nekkid wearing them. They are like pantyhose on me and I swear everything is out there jiggling. I wear those only when I know no one will be at the barn to see. I’m getting sick of my summer breeches disasters.

Spring, Fall and winter I’m good, I have some Harry Hall Keswicks that I love.

I don’t know. I generally ride in jeans, LOL. But I have a few pairs of TuffRiders that were inexpensive (~$45) and do the job and look okay and fit me. I wear a size 34 in them (I found a pair of Tailored Sportsmans in consignment once that were also a 34 but…did not fit, too small. Talk about disappointing!)

Of course, consignment is also an option but can be hit or miss because I rarely find stuff there in my size. I can’t decide if it’s because everyone is my size so it gets snatched up or not enough riders are my size so they don’t provide anything. LOL

I wanted to suggest the Devon Aire x-wear, but I can’t find them larger than 34 :frowning:

I’d pay the extra, buy the smart pak " customs" in a size or two too large and have them altered to fit you. I think the waist goes up to like 44 or something?

I’ve griped about this before, but generally 36 and up= those tights style breeches which are unflattering on anyone. If you are larger, a more tailored breech will look so much nicer.

I prefer the Irideon Cadence cords for all but the hottest weather, but they are tights rather than breeches, albeit not too revealing ones.

For hot weather, these aren’t bad, a lot cheaper and come in up to a 38:

Tropical Rider Enduracools - love 'em!

Yes, I wear men’s breeches sometimes. Especially for hunting, 'cause I can button my flask into the back pocket.

I’ve gotten some 'tude from somone at Greenway when I bought white ones on sale, but it doesn’t stop me.

You just have to try them on because some are made with a slender profile in the heinie area. The waist might fit, but you won’t be comfy in your rear or thighs.

I want to say that Ovation mens are really nice. The material is sturdy and the cut is good if you’ve got major junk in the trunk like me.

Ditto that.
I’m the queen of the apples. TR Enduracools are super comfy, but run large.
If you’re an 18, order the L, not the XL.

Thumbs up for Hispar boots

Just got my new tan(brown) 3 buckle field boots from eHimalaya on eBay. These are the Hispar brand.

I’m impressed!

I know some of you haven’t liked the preformed calf shape, but for me, it works. I’ve got teeny ankles, but a muscular around the back calf. Yes, the boots bulge a little more there than I do, but it’s not by much.

The leather is much more supple than I expected. It’s not a top quality baby calf of course, but it ain’t cardboard. They may not last forever if you’re hard on boots, but for about $245, who cares.

My only issue is that for the center buckle, I’m on the longest hole. Could’ve used a little more room there. But for the ankle, I’m on the 3rd hole in & on the top, the 2nd.

Be forewarned that I think the foot runs big in length. I ordered an 8, but it fits more like a 9 in the toe box. The heel is right, the width is right. Granted, I normally like the toe box to be right at my toes, but this will give more room for insoles, winter sox, etc.

I ordered the 8 XW. I think the next pair I’d try the 7.5 XW if the height’s ok on that combo. My customs are 19" up the back stay and I think the Hispars run about 1.5" shorter than that in the 7/7.5 range.

Breaking these suckers in right now. Under my sarong. Master BillyBob can’t figure out what I’m doing dressed like this…

Taken in my fantastic studio, I mean bathroom, just now:

Heads up, Ladies in Massachusetts!

There’s a pair of size 38]tan Fuller Fillies breeches in the clearance section in Smartpak for $25 dollars! I went yesterday and they were there so they’re probably still there! :D:)
