You know, looking back… I actually wish I hadn’t bought my own horse so soon. All the money spent on board, grain, shoes, hay, chiropractor, wormer, shots, joint supplements, blankets, bits, saddle pads and other assorted necessary equipment would have gone a LONG, LONG way in lessons and I probably would’ve gone a lot farther. I mean, realistically… between the three I have now, I could take that money and instead have at least 15 lessons per month. And I wouldn’t have stalls to clean, hay to stack, grain to buy, or any of that. Just groom, tack up, ride. No worry about when to retire the old one/if I should inject his hocks, or why the big one looks funky behind today, or that I should really be spending more time on the greenie.
I’m glad I didn’t know enough to know what ‘the medals’ or YR’s or any of that meant when I was of age. All I knew was I wanted to ride and jumping was fun! My parents paid for lessons until I was about your age, OP. Then I was cut off.
