Wow. Burghley.

Wow, Jonelle Price sure gave a quick ride. Amazing to watch that team working together.

The end of Movistar’s ride was sad. That horse was exhausted and literally couldn’t stay on his feet.
I realize they were very close to finishing but he should have retired coming out of the stadium.
I just watched that ride - I was kind of expecting to feel like the rider should be given the benefit of the doubt. That was worse than I was expecting to see. It was quite bad. Certainly not showing eventing in a good light if it goes unpunished.

I think that’s the first time I’ve seen WFP have a brain fart.
Um… I may have read the entire Colvin thread. A lunge, a hack or two, 9 tubes of “paste”, and GABA before jumping a 4’+ round?
And WTF is a ‘whistler’?
I think if I were Laine, had a 16 year old who’d been around Rolex a few times, was fit and sound, and I wanted to go to Burghley - I’d go. Who knows when she might get that opportunity again? So she didn’t have a perfect round, but she went, she put her money and skills on the line, and she’ll probably finish. Better than probably 99% of the readership of this board has done.
I agree. Lainey has had some very good horses before and has been out and about longer than most of the others. And I am not holding the top hat against her, even though it was a rather silly thing to do. I am happy that she did so well and I can now eat my words when I questioned whether she should be competing at Burghley. Lainey may be a late blossom and a serious contender down the road. What she may lack in finesse she makes up for in grit and determination.

Why do I keep getting last year’s videos? What’s the link for the current videos, if you please.
neener neener !!! <pointing finger, dancing like a chicken and laughing at ACME!!!>

I think it just meant Scott Stewart whistled and she came…I’ve never actually heard that term used before at shows though.

Except she said things like ‘I would whistle’ and ‘I would go to the ring and whistle’ and ‘if they said… go whistle, I would whistle’.

Which leads me to believe that ‘whistle’ and ‘whistler’ has a different, specific meaning in the h/j world. Not unlike the job descriptions ‘fluffer’ in the porn industry and ‘teaser’ in the breeding world.

Anyone care to share the insider info for those of us who are too hopelessly déclassé to ever have a whistler in our employ?

thanks, have fun!!!

thanks! with the right horse:), it could be fun:winkgrin: to ride!

Well, since I have avoided hunters (except for schooling) for a few decades now, this is only a guess …

… the reiners have spectator-friends in the grandstand who whistle their approval during the competitor’s round. Like college football, a fair amount of racket coming from the stands is considered desirable.

I can’t imagine this goes on at hunter shows, but maybe they whistle after the round, or when someone gets a ribbon ?? That’s all I can think of …

And now I must apologize for posting that derail … I just wondered where the usual posting had gone (to whip up some Burghley drama), and that was a few hours of reading if one covered the transcript as well.

I thought that must be the longest alternate route CMP could give them to make SURE a WFP-caliber rider didn’t use it and still win … then I figured out what he was doing! At least he didn’t forget entirely and end up a Big E.

No, SS didn’t whistle, BC whistled, according to the transcript.

‘I would whistle’, ‘I would go to the ring and whistle’ and ‘if they said… go whistle, I would whistle’

EDIT: Just watched the round and it wasn’t actually the boats. She tripped cantering into the water, must have found a hole. Fall was unrelated to a jumping effort.
It was a total oops, She was going great guns.
Love to watch that man ride. Really felt bad, they were fine, Just wet.
:frowning:
Lovely ride on Sam. I also thought Donner and Lynn had a nice go.

Regarding Michael’s fall with FischerRocana, I’m guessing she tripped on her own bell boot. If you ever take a clinic with Lucinda Green she’ll tell you of several trips, falls, missteps and accidents caused by bell boots.

Just watched Mark Todd’s xc round. What a thing of beauty. There were a couple moments where Leonidas II was a little look-y, but he clearly trusts Mark. They made the whole course look easy!

The term whistler was discussed on the Colvin thread; consensus was it’s cheering/whistling for your barn’s riders. Perhaps in the hopes of affecting the judges’ scores (or maybe encouraging your clients such that they continue spending the GNP of a small nation through you?).

Windingdown says: Find another country with the same placings where the riders are on their only 3/4* horses? All developed by their riders and only one bred in Europe. And 2 out of 4 bred for flat racing.

Ummm, Britain, Ireland, France, Sweden… a long list. Several of the British riders at Burghley are amateurs with one horse. Charlotte Brear for example. The owners of Tina Cook’s horse are better known as race horse owners but over the years she has often persuaded them to give their TBs a chance at eventing.

Can we please not discuss the Colvin thread here? I switched to the eventing world to get away from all of that stuff if I could. I don’t want to read about it here as well!

I thought there was a lot of lovely riding yesterday, with few exceptions. I thought the course was difficult but rode pretty fairly, was a true test, and no scary falls. The U.S. team has much to be heartened about.

Looking forward to watching some more XC when I have time, and the show jumping!

I will say boo to James Andrews, who after the abhorrent treatment of Movistar yesterday, took him into stadium today. Boo to the GJ for allowing it to happen.

Yes, but lets add team riders - or lets take the top 10 in each country and then look at the stats of those who are finishing xc at Burghley. My point is that we have some great horses but just not the number of them that the others have. If Donner retired tomorrow, Lynn would have nothing close to a 3* horse. Same with Lainey and Colleen (and Tim if we want to count him in as well).

Imagine any of these riders with a barn full of horses to compete at 3-4*. Do any of them bring their 2nd string horses to Rolex?

I just want more for all of us, that’s all.
