#24 Discovery Valley is the death of dreams. What’s happening?

#7 , the exit of #6, whole thing named “Anniversary Splash Out”, is also the source of wailings and gnashings. And E’s / R’s.
It’s got the bounce out. This seems to ride beautifully or not at all?

From what I can glimpse through the internet, it appears both of those have undulating terrain as a factor. I wonder if at least some of the issues are a sort of speed/distance + equine cooperation sort of thing.

5/6/7 are related. Not many problems, if any, at #5, Anniversary Splash In, it’s the out that seems to get them.

Otherwise the problems are spread around. Surviving the middle section, #16 - #24, is the object of the lesson, it seems.

Seriously, his dressage score is not good but it was one of the most nicely RIDDEN tests one could find. I doubt I could get Obie to trot a 20 m circle. That horse is a beast and a XC wizard but the sandbox is not his domain. He is one of those horses that is great on one phase, but it is the phase that really matters!
Yes, I was referring to his XC trip. Can’t wait to watch it. It will be impressive, I’m sure.

Laine was #54, to find her in the fence results.

20 at #4 Lion Bridge, the first water

20 at #20 Trout Hatchery.

#4, the “photo op” obstacle, is where Fisherrocana fell. Otherwise apparently some horses are looky through it, but they are getting through.

#20 Trout Hatchery had one other stop so far, Emily Lochore. It’s the one with the drop in, turn and up-bank-bounce out. It takes some riding, but people are getting through - more problems before and after, than at that one in particular.

Watching the video of the first rider on course, Oliver Townend on D. Blue, that ride was a masterful example of exactly how to ride this course. Everything worked for that pair, and other than a tiring horse it didn’t even look hard. Well it looked very hard, but not for them!

Oliver asked for bold and forward and D. Blue delivered, and all the strides worked out exactly, no problem anywhere.

D. Blue is so genuine. I want a horse exactly like him.

I know… Timobie fans unite!!! I do not want to jinx them and say that I bet they come close to making time… but…

I recall watching their first intermediate at Plantation. It looked like Obie was cantering the course and I kept thinking, geez, Tim is taking it nice and slow… They made the time with change left over.

Colleen clear with some time!

So proud of Lynn, what a super ride.

What happened to Laine? Where were her stops?
DANG! Go Colleen and Lynn!!! This is making my DAY!

That is too bad about Laine… I am not surprised but I hope that the experience was a positive one.

Colleen and CR also clear with some time …

So happy for Lynn and Colleen. Great rides for both. I did not think Laine would have a good ride. Horse hasn’t proven himself here, so I didn’t expect great results at Burghley.

I am also thus far impressed with CMP’s course not causing bad falls / MRs. Looks like he is opting for designing courses with the glance-offs rather than the RF. Did he meet a teachable moment?

WooHoo Lynn and Colleen. Not bad for Laine on her first trip to the Big Burghley!

Not to sound silly but when did Lainey lose the “y” on her name?

Everything on the feed today was “Laine.”

Just curious how that happened.

Emily

Yep, I was a bit disappointed that she chose to compete him at this level of course. Of course, I am not at all privy to the inside information, but from what I have seen, they were not ready for this course.

Congrats to CR and Lynne! Fabulous job ladies. Honestly can not think higher of Colleen, she just gets it done. The team for Rio is looking like it may be full of wonderful women riders

What it must be like to be MJ. Fall on one top horse, first on the other. Amazing.

Can I have the ride on Minos de Petra? He looks like he is going for a little canter around - occasionally, trot - no big deal.

Tim and Obie were clear with considerable time. Wow, I am so so happy for them both. I believe that Obie is Tim’s first horse above prelim and he developed him from the get-go. Could not see a more dedicated rider/trainer, and given Obie’s amazing level of soundness, I expect many years and great things from them!

And heck, Laine had two stops. That is a heck of a lot better than MANY TOP EUROPEAN 4* RIDERS!

Sooo… for those who have doubted our US riders: I hope that you are regaining confidence in the strength and tenacity of our riders and their trainers. Two of the three are relatively new to the big time scene. This was not like we sent a team of Boyds, Bucks, and Phillips.

Eat your words, I say with a big grin and wink… no ill-will intended.

But you do!!! :wink grin:

I think she forgot and could not find the "Y"in her helmet (all puns intended).

Well. Hooda thunkit.

Jung & WFP’s two dressage leaders are both out of the top ten after XC.

Bets on the standings after tomorrow’s show jumping? At these 4*'s the SJ will rattle the leaderboard once again …

I am betting that Jung/Sam finish 2nd, with a Price on either side of him in the victory gallop.

[brief victory dance here “Jonelle made the time! Jonelle made the time!” ]

Totally agree about Colleen and Lynn!

MJ’s situation is a little ironic in light of the recent thread on here in which the majority of posters seemed to be in favor of a rule disallowing anyone from riding additional horses after a fall, regardless of whether they felt ok to ride … If such a rule were in place, he wouldn’t be in first place with Sam now. Of course, I’m still not totally convinced he’s human, so maybe it wouldn’t apply to him!

I’m at Burghley bfne…dare I say there is no course in the US incorporates this much terrain before fence 11? An awfully lot of water to trek through from 4 to the Anniversary splash, then up a long hill to Capabilities Cutting…which will likely cut out the incapable for today. That’s just the start…

The British have said this is the year Burgley may have caught up to Badminton, due to the terrain and running the course in reverse. It’s relentless & impressive.
I’ve been to Burghley. We do NOT have a 4* hard course but we do have hills and many courses in area I and II (and others) that incorporate significant terrain for the level AND we have the hills for conditioning. That was my point. Not as some were implying that Americans don’t know how to ride hilly courses or how to condition for hills.

I just watched Laine and Anthony Patch’s go and I thought it looked like exactly what it was - an ambitious rider without previous experience at this level gaining experience on a nice horse that she trusts. Seemed to be a very credible effort.

He finished looking fit and game, so clearly conditioning was not an issue.

It also looked like she choose some of the long routes and wasn’t worried about time, which was a good choice.

I thought that at the first refusal he looked genuinely confused, like he didn’t understand the question. He was looking for the next jumping effort but didn’t think the boat was it. Once he understood WHAT the question he was; he was fine. I was no idea how you would even set up a schooling question that would mimic that, no ideas how you would prepare for it.

I understand that a lot of folks just don’t.like.Laine. and that’s fine. I just don’t see how you can look at that xc trip and conclude that she shouldn’t have been there or it was a bad decision to compete.
