WTF Are We Doing?

That would be convenient, yes?

A necropsy will tell the story, but for a horse that was foaled in 2010, heart failure would be just as bad since why the hell would a horse that is not even 10 years old have a heart attack over a fence. Interesting, doing a google search on Pizazz II yielded pages that were not accessible but for cache…

Jeloushe, I wonder why this thread is maintained? I think it is clear that the fate of the horse is this sport has generally become secondary to what is more important, money. Unless there was an actual study done that looked at horse deaths and was commissioned to make actual changes to the sport to work towards reducing them…

The ultimate answer to your original question…and let’s not be politically correct for a moment…

What The Fuck are we Doing?

Fucking nothing. Nothing but cataloging their deaths, and commenting on them, and saying “but they died doing what they love (bullshit, they love eating grass)”, or but they could have died in a pasture, mine did (then he/she died doing what they really loved), or “We can’t change the sport, because no one would watch it so what’s a horse or two” or "Well they killed them in the old days so what’s your point or “You don’t don’t know nothing about this sport so shut up”. That’s my favorite.

Your call Jeloushe (whom I respect), but I’d tie this one off and call it a day. Those that could make a change, won’t. Those on this list that have been there done that forever will say, “that’s just the life of a horse” (and do nothing) and those that actually do care…well…they either left of have the imprint of the boot from the “experts” and learned to toe the line.

No I did not and would never have wanted to! What happened here? Would mods have done that? That was a lot of work over the years and something I felt very important. Not sure what the deal is with the list disappearing

This thread is maintained for many reasons. One being so those horses and riders names are never lost. Two, so we can quickly gauge the enormity of it all, and for future reference and looking back.

No some people might not care or “get it”, that’s isn’t deterring me from wanting a safer sport.

I think it needs to be kept up and I for one am glad you are. Not only because it’s something we need to always be aware of, but because in the future we will be able to look back and see how much better (hopefully, being optimistic here) it has gotten. A lot of work and really good discussion went on here. I appreciate all the effort people have put into this.

Someone else figured out if you quote the first post it comes back.

Thank you for finding and reposting that Blugal. It’s absolutely gut wrenching to read.

Has there been anything so far this year? I don’t remember seeing anything, which would actually appear to be an improvement by this time of the year from last year.

Yes posted April 21 someone shared there was a fatality. I haven’t updated the thread yet though.

Wow how did I miss that.

Ongoing inquest into the deaths of Olivia Inglis and Caitlyn Fischer.

I must say I didn’t read all the names on the lists but just seeing how long those lists were for both horses an riders my blood ran cold and i have goosebumps. This is awful. I know there has been a big push on horse racing lately due to deaths at Santa Anita but one of the main reasons horse racing has gotten a lot safer is the horse racing industry is forced to be completely transparent with its statistics regarding injury and fatalities. If eventing and other equestrian sports were also forced to be as transparent it might do a lot to help the situation. I don’t know just an idea but something needs to be done there is no reason those lists should be that long. Horse riding is dangerous to begin with we don’t need to add to the dangers.

Jealoushe, youmissed one from 2016:

I was not happy about the Hamburg and Hickstead Derby Bank. It is simply too dangerous. Watching the horses take those banks on YouTube videos-it is a miracle no one dies. One rider dislocated her shoulder.

The last Olympic cross country course was also scary. The way those jumps were designed. People are insane to risk their lives over fences like that.

Does anyone keep track of the horses that are injured and go on to be euthanized later on, after a period of attempted rehab? Or do those horses simply disappear without being tracked.

This is a thread for Eventing. Those are show jumping obstacles, and nobody has suggested that riders or horses have lost their lives at those obstacles.

You are entitled to your opinion, but it would be helpful if it was based on more than your own assessment of what you feel is “insane”. We are trying to improve course design and the way jumps are built to minimize the risk of fatal and career-ending injuries.

Well, it has come to my attention that there have been several deaths this year that have been UNREPORTED. WHY??? Why are we hiding the truth in our sport? If we want to make it safer, we need to be OPEN AND HONEST. This is extrmely disheartening.

Here I was thinking 2019 has been better, but sadly it has not. I will update the list shortly. Just confirming my research.

Andrew Heffernan’s Gloriette Tn was euthanized after a fall June 17 2018 at Catton Park in the UK Intermediate. The horses results list the horse as RETIRED.

Tyler Cassles Machismo Star was euthanized after a fall March 9 or 10 2019 at Poplar Park UK in the Intermediate. The horses results list as a HF.

2 problems here, one being Gloriette Tns fall being listed improper and another being these deaths were not publicized. Why?

Jealoushe, just want to thank you for making the effort to find the info, pull it together in one place and staying on top of it. Strong work!
