WWYD? Hunter/jumper trainer who doesn't jump?

Yes it is very possible.

OP, I just want to take a second and validate your worries.

Not because you have a trainer who doesn’t jump, but because you have the opportunity to start a horse from scratch, essentially, and you want to do it right! How great you are asking good questions about laying a foundation and proactively addressing potential problems! In my experience, when we inherit horses from others, we’re less worried about messing them up because they’ve already survived the inherent mistakes of the humans who came before you. But now, with a greenie, their success and failure will be partially reflected on you and no one else (the other burden will be on the horse himself, lol).

So anyway, I just want to say that “I get it”. And I’m really, really glad you have a fantastic trainer who will probably be able to take you where you want to go, but if not, has the right blend of ego and education to be able to notice and acknowledge when someone else needs to be involved.
