XC thread.

Now that’s interesting. But having to do two stadium rounds might change the horses’ usual form, too – this time. A clean jumper might get sloppy, a sloppy one sharper. Definitely interesting!

Wait! No more than three per country? What about their scores? That’s not fair!
Yes, it’s a stupid rule. A country could have riders placed 1st/2nd/3rd/4th and 5th, and the last two would not be allowed to go in the individual jump off, even if they were 20pts clear of the next highest rider.

Yes it is a stupid rule, same thing happened yesterday in gymnastics, except only TWO from each country can make it into the All Around competition, the most coveted medal in gymnastics. So the reigning World Champion, who finished 4th out of all the competitors, will not compete but someone else who finished well below her will.

And does anyone remember another stupid rule at the Pan Ams where US riders finished 1, 2, 3 but because only two medals per country, Packy McGaughn (sp?), who finished third, didn’t get the bronze medal and instead it went to the 4th placed finisher from another country?

Who makes these idiotic rules, some jerk who wants to spread the medals around, regardless if it means someone with a better score goes without their medal.

What great fun this was to watch today.

I’m trying not to think about what the U.S. score would be if Twizzel had gotten a slightly better look at the drop – sooo close to deciding to go instead of stopping, even with that approach :sigh:

Show jumping will be very exciting tomorrow with team scores so close at the top!

Excuse me if I am repeating myself, but there was a father/son pair who won Golds in the Winter Olympics (both from Lake Placid) - I don’t remember who they are, however…

Now to catch up with the rest of this thread (had to go ride… had a lovely gallop  )

Top two tied individually. In the wild event of a tie for some medal spot, would they jump a THIRD SJ round to break it, or would the second round be sorted by lowest time to break it?

That no more than 3 per country rule messed up our women’s gymnastics also. Bad rule. It should be the top nommatter which country!

The gymnastics rule application last night was devastating. Jordan was one of the individual gold medal favorites too. :frowning:

I think it is closest to OT on xc that breaks the tie…or at least that is what it is in the USA.

As painful as this is, I don’t think it’s being a jerk. It’s giving the CHANCE to try to other countries than the big powers, and I like that. Like that gymnast from the Dominican Republic.

I’m glad they get a chance.

The thing is, they shouldn’t even have to have a extra “individual” jumping round in the first place. The winner should be determined after tomorrow’s first (and should by “only”) round of SJing. This idea of having a second jumping round to determine the individual medals is yet another silly Olympic rule. It is not done in the WEG, it is not done at Euro Championship. It was imposed by the IOC because other sports whined and complained that an athlete could get two medals (team and individual) for one performance. But eventing is a special case, you can’t have two seperate competitions, they’d have to be held 4-6 weeks apart.

It flies in the face of the “best” athletes competing and it’s silly condescending tokenism. If someone from the Dominican Rep is good enough to compete for a medal they should do it on their own merits.

I wonder how the person who gets the medal but not the score feels. Taken literally, the person doesn’t really “win” a medal – “scores” for a medal, but not really wins it…IMO.

Hawley Bennett-Awad

tv says Hawley is stable and will remain in hospital overnight for observation.

The ticker on the tv also said “Brazilian breaks medal in shower” !!! ???

Aww, what a shame for the Japanese rider! I’m cheering for them, love to see up-and-coming countries putting on a good show. That really was a bummer of a fall.

I wanted to respond by saying that they should take the sports as they are, regardless of impact on medals – a sport is a sport. Do other sports have their format and conditions changed, making them NOT the sport they really are?

But I can’t really justify that argument when the medal count is such a big deal for some. I don’t get it, but it pisses some folks off when a country can get multiple medals without making multiple efforts.

Personally, I don’t care whether the US wins more medals than China. The US doesn’t support its athletes financially like China does, so it isn’t even a fair comparison. If and when we do beat them in the medal count, it often just means that private money managed to beat public money again.

[Sorry, but although it’s kinda irrelevant, to me the whole thing just harkens back to campaign-finance-reform-like issues, especially with some sports (the equivalent of downballot political races, I suppose).]

The Olympics is supposed to be the best against the best. It is not supposed to be a venue for political correctness. When the fourth (or fifth, etc.) best athlete in a sport can’t compete for a further individual medal, then the whole competition becomes a travesty.

If they want to “get a chance” they need to be good enough. This is the Olympic Games, supposed to be the best athletes in the world competing. not some watered down event to make everyone happy. What BS.
