Yep! I like animals (wanted to be a vet but didn’t like chemistry enough to bother with OChem). I’ve got no hang ups about eating meat.
Some animals eat meat. Lions will start eating their prey while it is still alive, which is horrific for the zebras but I’m not going to start trying to prevent lions from eating. I, a human, am also designed to est meat, though not in nearly as horrific fashion. I could get away with not eating meat, but I don’t want to. I like the taste and texture + good source of protein.
Could the industrial farming industry be better (in regards to animal welfare, environmental impact, etc)? Also yes.
Ok, thanks. But I’m not really interested in justification either way, only numbers.
Why?
What is your purpose behind asking?
I don’t eat meat because I don’t like it. I’ve never eaten meat, since I was like four or something. And before that my mom had to essentially force me (not physically, lots of bribery and threats) to eat chicken nuggets when she could. Dark meat chicken nuggets were the only meat I’d choke down on occasion, anything else I’d puke up. I have a series texture aversion with several foods, and especially meat.
I have nothing morally against eating meat. As long as the animals are treated humanely.
Perhaps an Instagram or Facebook poll would be better. This is a discussion forum. People will discuss the question asked.
But this is COTH.
I eat meat. Animal protein is one of the easiest and most digestible forms of protein that humans have access to - and it on average has a lower environmental impact than commercially produced plant protein. Not to mention the fact that meat is one of the easiest sources of fat and calories - fat is extremely important and relatively hard to introduce into a plant based diet (especially if eating locally).
I have no issues with eating meat or with those who personally choose not to! I do think that understanding where your food comes from is important and as well as choosing the most ethically produced meat you can afford (shop local farms if you can!). But I will never judge someone’s personal diet choices.
You’re correct, but it didn’t occur to me (and still doesn’t) that there’s anything to discuss. Maybe someone wants to start a thread about why people eat or don’t eat meat. It’s just that I’m not interested in that, only the numbers, and only for horse people. I think that’s why an Instagram or Facebook poll wouldn’t get me the information I’m looking for.
Good news, you’re not obligated to read the comments. Hooray!
I’ll add more, obviously you don’t need to read it. Scroll right on back to the top! Unfollow the thread!
I eat meat. I was vegetarian for a long time when I was younger (pocketbook decision), but when I started traveling out of college I wanted to be able to experience other cultures in full, which food is a large part of. I never went back.
Just yesterday I was thinking that I probably should go back to not eating meat, or at the very least I need to look into buying a half-cow or something from a reputable farmer instead of the grocery store, because the treatment of the animals in the mass-slaughter industry is really sketchy. Good for us, the consumers, to have animals raised in sterile environments - not so good for the animals and their well being. Yes, I am aware that farmers care about the animals. I’m not saying they are outright abused. It’s just… not ideal for them, the animals.
I think halal and kosher slaughter should not be allowed, particularly kosher where the animal must be conscious when their throat is cut. This has nothing to do with dislike of a religion, in case someone wants to go there.
Not only do I eat meat, I raise and butcher my own.
But this is still a weird thing to ask, especially since you very specifically don’t want context.
Interesting that other than one, the only people defending and/or celebrating their choice are the meat eaters. No need to read anything into my comment, it’s simply an observation. You want discussion? You got it.
Nearly 80% of your respondents eat meat. You have 7 respondents commenting on this thread. Do you know what 20% of 7 is? One.
So yeah, the math is mathing.
I’ll jump in. I eat meat. I grew up in a rural area, my grandparents and then uncle owned a fishing lodge. Many in my family fish and hunt, including myself, and we’ve raised some of our own beef and poultry. I like the taste, there are health benefits (in moderation), and for the most part I know where my meat and animal products are coming from.
If I was single and lived in a very urban environment than perhaps I would rethink my choices.
Rather rude way of responding to survey responses. You posted a poll on a forum. People are going to thus talk about it.
There’s tons of equestrian Facebook groups you could post the poll in.
So yeah, I understand math.
Would context change your answer? If yes, why? If no, what value would it have?
The point of a poll is to gather information. Extra information (context, reasoning, justification, etc) is usually helpful when someone is collecting information, be it for research purposes, to make a point, or to come to a decision.
Yeah, having the totally expected number talking about not eating meat is “interesting”
It’s clear that you’ve got some personal motive or bias that you’re looking to confirm here with a meaningless poll and zero desire for context. God forbid anyone include anything more than a yes/no, because that might muddy your waters.
