I love the solocomb too, especially with youngsters.
I also find the replacement blades expensive though, as the one downside.

If the mane is dirty it will dull the blade fast! I only use it after a bath to help prolong the life of the blade. Use a little oil on it too like you do clippers.

This thread influenced me to try the Posture Prep and I LOVE it. Both of my retired horses absolutely loved it, especially on their backends. And it works out so much hair! My flighty mustang ACTUALLY started to relax while I was using it on her. I’m sold.

I splurged on this and I have to say I am unimpressed. It behaves like watered down show sheen.

May I suggest trying Equifuse instead, if you haven’t already? I have the Rehydrinse and the Gleam shine serum and I like them both A LOT. The Rehydrinse is really nice in the summer because I live on the surface of the sun and have to hose horses off daily - I don’t do a bucket/sponge though, I just mix up a spray bottle and spray it on afterwards as I feel it’s less product waste. It doesn’t leave them slippery or greasy. The Gleam I use primarily on tails, but I also keep a bottle mixed up that is Rehydrinse + Gleam (can’t remember where I got this idea, but it’s a similar idea to the Manely Long ā€œShockā€ treatment) for more widespread use (and less product waste) as an everyday grooming spray.

I hate show sheen, cowboy magic and anything that feels excessively silicone-y (for the feel, not because I outright oppose the use of silicone on hair) but I like Equifuse. And it smells nice. I even use the Rehydrinse on my dogs. :joy:

I can give it a whirl! My current favorite for tails is that pink stuff that smells like a French whore (not my description, someone else from the board described it that way and it’s perfect). It clearly moisturizes the hair, which is what I’m looking for.

I use Sure Coat on her dock and forelock.

Are you talking about the human ā€œPinkā€ hair lotion from Luster or the Healthy HairCare horse ā€œPink stuffā€ I’m guessing the first one just based on the smell description. I tried that a while back but it wasn’t my fav for the residue it left. I use the Equifuse stuff plus Super Gro (yeah, the human stuff) on the roots on a pretty regular basis. If you like the heavy consistency of the Pink lotion, you might not like the Equifuse though - the Gleam is a gel, similar to Cowboy Magic and the Rehydrinse is a liquid concentrate.

Manely Long products have been on my list to try because a lot of people (esp the Gypsy people) swear by it but OOF, the prices.

Healthy Hair Care horse stuff. I think my aversion to lanolin is why I hate how it smells, but I love how the hair feels so… hmph.

I use the Manely Long Hair detangler on my very thick long maned pony and it’s the best thing I’ve used. It is pricey but you don’t need to use it at each grooming session. Not sure if other people use detanglers every time, but this one you don’t have to. I think there might be some silicone in it but it doesn’t give you that Armor All feeling afterwards.

The pink Healthy HairCare stuff does smell and I wasn’t impressed when I tried it years ago. Two boarders at my barn use it and leave a vapor trail when their horses walk by, so I’m guessing they need to use it all the time.

I purchased the shampoo/conditioner and tried them on my geldings tail. His tail is thick but has baby fine light hair.

It cleaned well but, the conditioner was too heavy and left his tail hair weighted down, the perfume smell was over powering for me.

If your horse has a heavy thick tail that can handle the products I’m sure it works well.

Does anyone have recommendations for a white tail? I have tried the blue Quic Silver shampoo, but my boy’s tail is still very stained. Any other recommendations or tips to whiten up his tail?

Dawn dish soap works surprisingly well on tail stains. I also recently saw Lillie Keenan’s groom talking about baking soda (https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1334111924345919), which I haven’t tried but am keen to check out.

I use a vinegar pre and post rinse, and it seems to help.

So I’m in the midst of applying a 50/50 mixture of Manely Long Hair detangler and conditioner to my mare’s somewhat dreadlocked mane and tail. Two applications so far, and it it’s doing something good. Holding off on brushing until she’s had a few more applications.

My financial advisor called while I was putting it on today, and I was fumbling my cell phone because the stuff is so slippery.

Equiderma shampoo. I mentioned trying Vetrolin shampoo (cheaper, nostalgic smell) on my guy up thread. It hasn’t worked for him. Itchy, dandruff, kind of leaves him dull even though I rinse very thoroughly.

Went back to Equiderma yesterday and he looks like a million bucks and was immediately less itchy and dandruff is gone.

I’m not a fan of the pink conditioner, but I really like Infusium 23 Original Leave in Treatment. I learned this from a Morgan trainer whose horses always gleamed. I put in inch or so in a spray bottle and fill the rest with water. It does a nice job of helping lift dirt, reduce static, and leaves the coat soft and shiny with no sticky residue.

I recently discovered Shapley’s Magic Sheen. It’s fantastic for detangling tails. I find that it works better for this than Show Sheen or Carr Day & Martin Mane and Tail. In the middle of winter when you can’t wash tails, this has been a great alternative for occasional use.

I’m having a really rough week and all the tack stores are having sales so I am now re-reading this thread for some retail therapy inspiration. Quiet time spent grooming heals the soul I think.

I LOVE the Knotty Horse products. They don’t have any silicone, so they detangle and condition without the drying effects. And they smell AMAZING. I’ve converted so many of my barn-mates!
I also like the Equiderma lotion for dry skin or any mild skin stuff. If it’s anything more serious, the Kinetic Vet line is fabulous (antibacterial/antifungal products; they also have some with hydrocortisone and bug repellent for insect bites).

I basically make my own but with an added bonus. I put 1/3 conditioner, 1/3 ShowSheen or equivalent, 1/3 water in a spray bottle. Add a dash of Mrs Stewart’s bluing if you have a grey tail, and it’s my daily moisturizing detangler for tails.
