Zenyatta's height 18hh or not?

That was my point. It’s no longer an insult to say that a horse “has left Kentucky.” Empire Maker and Johannesburg were sold to Japan, Lion Heart went to Turkey. And none of them were failures here.

Smarty was still a viable Kentucky stallion–just not at a high stud fee. And he’s only one of many stallions who’ve made the Ky to PA trip recently (E Dubai, Jump Start, Eurosilver, Honor and Glory, Grand Reward, etc).

Forgive my ignorance here, but could a mare do both? If a mare does ET as well as LC breeding, would that mean that the LC foal wouldn’t be eligible for registration with the JC?

No. I think the penalty involves revoking the MARE’S status. If the mare’s not JC, neither foal could be.

The JC does not want artificial reproduction and the penalities for violating it are pretty strict.

@Laurie–I don’t know that shipping to Japan (growing, very wealthy market for horses) is quite the same as moving out of the #1 US market to a state that isn’t known for turning out top-end horses. Japan wants the best, as do the Middle East connections, while in the US, the best of the best stay in Kentucky or get bought by overseas buyers who have too much money to say no.

Aside from big names like Z and RA, the (LC) breeding shed gives many thousands of TB mares jobs, and therefore homes, after the track.

I don’t know why you couldn’t have one ET foal and one live cover foal. I can’t think of a single reason why you would want to however. Why have one foal you can register and race and one you can’t?

The “Queen” as she is called is 17.2 hands. Saw her in person last Sunday am. She also drinks bottled water only and eats 5# of carrots a day :)[/QUOTE]

Jealous, of course!
