Cathryn Sophia is off the Oaks trail…

Too bad but the reasons cited seem to be appropriate and the best choice for this filly at the moment. If they feel they don’t want to throw her against what look like better fillies at this point, no shame skipping them in favor of a softer slot to build her back up…and look to the fall.

Saw the replay of the Louisiana Derby. You could see the horse was gaining so thought he’d find a path. Wondered what Corie Lanerie was thinking.

Also looks like Greenpointcrusader will be dropped from the ranks of Steve Haskin. Never did materialize.[/QUOTE]

Yeah I just watched the replay. The plan was not thought out well. The horse clearly had plenty left to give but nowhere to go.

Definitely wouldn’t rule him out as being a solid contender for the Derby, although I think Nyquist right now really is going to be the one to beat imo.

21 days to the derby. Both Arkansas Derby and Lexington were surprises for me. The issue of the better derby horses is interesting. Which is it? East or west?

Think it is a sure thing that SONGBIRD is HOY. lol.

SD, I’m with you on Songbird… I think she’s the only given in the whole Derby/Oaks crowd

Derby, I’d give the nod to Nyquist but there are still some other quality horses in the field. I know Mohaymen didn’t run the race that was expected in the Florida Derby along with a number of quality 3 year olds in the field. Weather and PP will play a big part in the outcome IMO.

Oh no, Songbird is out of the Oaks :frowning:

Sounds like she’s had a low grade fever and unable to train. She’s started a course of antibiotics and the thought is no longer term impact but the lack of training keeps her out of the Oaks.

Glad to see she’s being well taken care of but bummed she won’t be able to show her stuff in the Oaks.

Agreed, what a bummer! I would’ve loved to see her, I think she would’ve annihilated the field. I also think she probably would’ve taken down the Derby field, if they’d chosen to run her there.

Glad to see she’s receiving such good care. (Not that I expected anything else!)

Agreed! I have been following her and I wanted to see her run in the Oaks. I hope she is feeling better soon and can’t wait to see what else she does this year.

And Cupid is out and Mo Tom is in. Cupid will be having surgery for a trapped epiglotis.

That’s what I get for thinking this year’s crop had mostly avoided the early season dropouts

At least four colts on the derby field bubble. As it stands today the pts are as follows.

This is a very nice crop of colts, as are the fillies.

Sadly Songbird is out of the oaks, but God bless Rick Porter for looking out for her.

It will take a gallant effort by another colt or filly to steal HOY from Chrome this year.

Hope the following doesn’t sidetrack the main tropic of this thread. But I thought it would lend some insight to what proper seats cost for the Derby/Oaks. Personally I prefer a Box. Been VERY fortunate to have friends in the right places who included me in their Box for many years. I rarely paid anything. I sat at table in this area before the renovation a number of years ago for the Breeders’ Cup. It is fabulous but I didn’t feel nearly as much of the excitement, energy as I do/did when outside in the crowd. To me it’s kind of like being at the races but watching the races on one of the big TV screens. I’m old school, prefer to be out in the crowd and follow the horses with my binoculars.

This is NOT an advertisement. I have nothing to do with ownership nor am I brokering it. It was emailed to me by a friend who seems to think I still have some money left. I post this for “educational” value . . . . . The 8 seat table’s face cost is $22,025 and there is a $22,500 PSL you have to pay to for the right to buy the tickets. So it’s $5,565 per seat for both days for a total of $44,520. I am charging the buyer an additional 5% which comes to $2,226.

As you point out, there is nothing cheap on the first Saturday in May.

Placement of colts in the starting gate is also a priority as this dated link points out.

http://m.livescience.com/32560-does-a-horses-post-position-affect-its-chances-of-winning-the-kentucky-derby.html

As for me, as far back as 1952, I be will seated in front if the TV enjoying the festivities on the cheap.

And for me, TVG… less of the insipid coverage of hats, fewer commercials, races from other tracks and even if I see the Derby on a slight delay, it is broadcast on TVG just about when the horses cross the wire in real time which is close enough for me

One week away and without the posts being selected here are the current odds.

HOF trainer Lucien Lauren once stated (even before the 73 derby) that what made Secretariat such an extraordinary racehorse was the fact that he could hold or accelerate his speed in the turns without losing ground. Everyone of Secretariat’s TC races was proof of that. Anyone who has read about Secretariat’s days at stud are aware that he would race the fence line in his 2 acre paddock with other stallions in opposing paddocks like Round Table without a slip, slide, tumble, or crash.

In 2016 is there a colt in the derby and a filly in the oaks that has that talent? I don’t recall that the last TC champion had such sure footed turn acceleration, but then again I placed an exacta on Keen Ice and Frosted. Ugggh.

I’m not sure if there is a colt or filly in either field. Exaggerator? Brody’s Cause? Without Songbird in the Oaks, I don’t know.

Have been hoping a horse on the bubble could slide in, but so far, apparently none of the top 20 have dropped off the list due to injury, etc. Looks like all are coming up to this well, which is nice to see for a change.

Interesting derby subplot too.

Rachael Valentina is the current odds favorite for Friday without Songbird in the picture.

Hope it is a good, safe and clean race (as I hope all races are  ).

Do you mean Valentina?

I like the name “Adore”. Think I’ll make her my wild card pick.

Been watching replays and reading a couple of missed articles.

Nyquist looks formidable. But I also really loved Trojan Nation’s Wood Memorial. Love this picture of him working, and being by Street Cry, I think he could be very dangerous.http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/211164/maiden-trojan-nation-seeks-derby-upset

Not sure why - unless he gets a good post and can be covered up a bit so he doesn’t fade too soon, I also like Danzing Candy.

I feel so guilty liking all these West Coast horses. I need to move.

Except I sure wish Adventist could have made the cut. Really would love to see Leah Gyarmati in the TC races. Maybe he’ll make the Preakness or Belmont.
