2024 Olympics - Eventing

Just seen that Ros’ penalties have been confirmed after review…

I’m just amazed by that decision.

There is a video on FB by Rebecca Sherwood that shows Ros clearly inside the flag.

My unofficial xc stats:
64 XC starters (one individual rider from China w/d before XC).

57 finished on a number (including the Italian rider subbed in after dressage who is not in the individual results).

10 riders were double clear - would have been two more but both got flag penalties.

4 missed flag penalties awarded.

One horse fall - Portugese rider at fence 3.

Two rider falls - Equador and Germany.

One rider pulled up by the Ground Jury - Czech.

One frangible device activated - Finland.

One horse retired on course due to injury - AUS.

One ambigous - Poland. Fence results show as Retired at 10A, but this was after refusals and the summary shows an E.

And beyond that 10 refusals/run-outs among riders who finished.

All in all, quite a safe day of sport though the one horse fall was scary looking. The course tested the whole field - from top to bottom. In that respect, I think the course designer nailed it. He also did a fabulous job of utilizing the venue with stunning visuals, and the builders knocked it out of the park.

In that fb video it looks like the rider’s whole leg was on the outside of the flag when it was straight, before the flag being hit sideways and then the rider and horse went straight once coming down from the jump?

A close call that, could have been either way and still correct.

I have a question about team v individual medals. I know that everyone goes first (in SJ) to decide team medals then the top 25 go again to decide individual (according to the COTH article above). I read a few months ago that individuals are going twice because there’s an Olympic rule about not being able to win two medals for the same performance.

Isn’t the two rounds in SJ new? What did we do before? Is this a new rule? What am I missing?

Two SJ rounds in the Olympics to decide team and then individual medals has been standard for several cycles - I distinctly remember it from Tokyo and (I think) Rio too.

Yes Athens was the first year of the change (2004).

Edit: but haven’t been able to find an answer to that either. I wonder if it was an Olympic rule update as well for that year?

that horse fall was nasty. I know the horse was quick to get to its feet, but it would be nice to hear an update that the horse is really ok

I read on EN that the Irish are making a substitution for SJ as Action Lady is out. This moves US up to 8th in team standing.

I hope they get x-rays of his neck.

I have a question regarding flags since they seem to be a source of controversy.
As it stands now, is the rule that the horse and rider must go over the jump? A falling flag isnt automatically a penalty, if it appears they negotiated the jump. So there is judgement involved.

Has there been any movement towards standardizing the flag attachment? If dropping a flag required X amount of force, then they could have all dropped flags count as penalties. With so many skinnies and difficult turns on course, it would seem more important these days.

If the flags required any more force you’d start to risk injuring the horse or rider if they hit it, or at least risk throwing them off balance in the air. Having video on the jumps seems to work pretty well - I wish we could see the official video they used for Ros to see what it looked like head-on.

Fwiw there were a ton of (albeit homegrown looking) cameras on course pointed at jumps. I saw at least one go pro style and this was at fence 1, so I imagine they have actual video.

i think the flags may be flimsier since a horse was impaled on a broken flag. Or perhaps it was a jump number pole. the details are blurry, the horrific injury is clear in my mind.

Pretty sure it was a broken flag… I remember this too. Happened at one of the big 3 day events here in the UK, Badminton or Burghley maybe. Think was a big chestnut horse… awful incident was punctured underneath and immediately bled profusely. Vets attended immediately but couldn’t save the horse.
