Sydney’s BUST-ED!!!

I am not a knowledgeable foal person, but the broodmare at the barn where I manage had a filly overnight last night. Thank goodness she always (3 times so far) has her babies by herself, outside, overnight, with no signs it’s coming. Mom and baby checked out healthy today.

It’s really funny. Anne did not intend to breed colorful Morgans. Her foundation stallion was a chestnut with a star. Her second foundation mare was a dark sooty buckskin registered as bay, with no white markings. Anne knew she was buckskin but didn’t buy her for her color.

When she started breeding these 2, she got some bays and chestnuts, but she also got palominos and buckskins. A lot of them had weird white markings, partially blue eyes etc. And a lot had crooked blazes but no white on their legs - Ancan True Colors, this colt’s maternal grandsire, is a palomino, and he also has a partial blue eye and black smudges on his coat. So this little guy, Lola, and a lot of the horses she bred have these markings.

This little guy also traces back to Regal Charade through his maternal grand-dam, and he is a wildly marked dark chestnut. He does not test positive for any of the white markings genes found in Morgans.

I’m not sure I understand. Did somebody sneak a Sadddlebred in there somewhere?

The extra white is probably a mutation like splash white or it’s a new mutation of some sort.

Nope, not as far as we know - but there was a lot of funny business back then. He had lines known for throwing a lot of white markings. The Morgan registry anti-high white rule was in effect from 1962 to 1995 - any foal with white on the body, other than obvious scars, or white above the knees/hocks could not be registered.

He’s tested negative for splash, W20, etc. All the white markings genes in the Morgan breed, so probably some sort of new mutation.

Its kinda funny you say this as there was a couple of Morgan breeders that were sneaking in ASB blood into the breed. I leased one that was discovered to be half ASB/Morgan. She had won some decent classes before they ran DNA.

On that note, no one will ever convince me that Waseeka’s In Command wasn’t half ASB. I loved his “sire”, Waseeka’s Nocturne, but there was no way when you looked at In Command…

Another week, another picture. This is the filly we were calling “Beep” but she now has a JC name. My husband named her “Dibs” as in ‘this one’s mine’. :grinning:

I’d claim that one, too!

According to pedigree query he’s got Upwey King Peavine (Saddlebred) via Upwey King Benn, top and bottom. Maybe the old genes made an appearance. https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/waseekas+in+command

My 2025 foal watch has started. Just one for me, Bodacious Barb in foal to Saketini. Will be a full sibling to Ninja (2020, At Close Range) who earned FEH Champion Yearling and was 3rd in the US Event Horse Futurity last year. Very excited for this foal. I should probably sell it, but I really would like to keep these successful genetics for myself. We’ll see.

Barbie isn’t playing by the rules. Day 329 today. She has a half full udder, and her colostrum has been testing high (27+ brix) for a week. It doesn’t look like milk, it’s translucent yellow and slightly sticky. Tonight she is off the charts (33+ brix) and spending the night inside under camera. Is she stall walking because she’s uncomfortable, or just mad that she isn’t out with her friends and the only horse in the barn? Probably the latter.

Fingers crossed for an uneventful foaling, hopefully she doesn’t drag this along for days/weeks. When she had Ninja, I was using pool strips and her pH sat at <6.3 for 7 days. (!!!) He was born at day 342, he most recent foals were born 350 and 352. All boys. Maybe a filly this time?

We had a buckskin filly last night, and I am so relieved that it was a textbook birth. The mare, who is a maiden, is doing well, except, she won’t let the filly nurse on her own. We ended up having to hold the mare every 45 minutes to help the filly nurse. The whole time we were in the barn, it was a torrential downpour with lightning.

Wow, that straw bed looks so fluffy and cozy for that filly.

Another Ancan foal, a bay filly born March 31st. She is heavily In Command and Upwey bred, but I can assure you that Anne’s horses look like Morgans, not Saddlebreds.

Her dam is a half-sister of my Lola.
