2025 Foal Watch

Congratulations @Phaedra1! Hopefully your mare will settle down in a day or two.

@quietann, that’s a sharp looking filly!

I love seeing these new foals.

The Upwey connection to the Morgan breed is really interesting. Owen Moon, the owner of Upwey Farm (part of which is now GMHA) was a wealthy man who had been involved with Saddlebreds but became interested in Morgans in the 1920s and 1930s, when the breed was at a crossroads - utility horse or saddle horse? Moon preferred saddle horses, and he basically saved the Morgan registry during the Great Depression but one of the “costs” was allowing Upwey King Peavine to “become” a Morgan. He did have Morgan blood, but did not trace in tail-male line to Figure, as was required of registered Morgans at that time. Later, a few other horses with similar status were also registered, with their registration number starting with an X, but to a large degree these were ranch horses.

Upwey King Benn, UKP’s son, sired Upwey Ben Don and Upwey Ben Quietude, both out of the royally bred Morgan mare Quietude. With each generation away from Upwey King Peavine, the horses got a little sturdier and had better Morgan type.

Bodacious Barb is at 338 days today. Started waxing morning of 337. Storms rolling in this evening so I brought her in early…she’s pacing, but is that just from missing her friends? She’s lightly dripping milk. Milk is thick cloudy cream color, and brix has been off the chart since day 334. She was stall walking mildly this morning from 4-6am.

The storm, the full moon, and her physical condition gives every sign she will foal tonight-- she’s already peed twice in an hour. Or she could keep me waiting until her preferred day 342.

Sending easy foaling vibes your way!

Good luck with the storm and the hopefully imminent foaling.

These pictures were taken a couple weeks ago at 3 days old. I fear this one is going to run her momma ragged :joy: mom is almost ready to let the other two mares help babysit. Her previous two were colts and she had a big best friend mare who played aunt right from the beginning, but she doesn’t have that friend this time.
This baby is by Tamarino and out of a Nabab de Reve mare. Still currently nameless. We are slow on the naming front

Congratulations @Sarah616!

After two long, sleepless nights she’s here! Big red filly born at 2:30am on the pink full moon. By Saketini out of Bodacious Barb, full TB sister to my really nice young 5yo At Close Range.

Congratulations.
Now get some extra rest.

She looks wonderful @EventerAJ. And I love your foaling stall!

Congratulations! What a relief to have everything go well. My mare will be 330 days in another week and since she barely has a bag started I’m thinking I have time to wait.

Barb must be relieved. That’s a lot of filly to have carried around.

She’s lovely.

Will you name her that - Pink Moon ?

At least Pinky would be a funny barn name.

She doesn’t have a name yet. I give most of my Saketini foals Japanese-themed barn names (Miso, Ninja, Bonsai, Akita, etc). I’m leaning toward Geisha or Haiku, but open to suggestions!

Her registered name will be “At” something. (At First Sight, At Close Range, At The Moment, At Heart, At Best, At Or Above, At Will, are some of my other homebreds). I like using my prefix as part of the name, rather than a cluster of meaningless letters. AT is the initials of my and my husband’s first names.

She continues to do very well and spent a few minutes outside in the paddock so Barb could roll and move around, something that I think is so important for the mare to clean out and bounce back.

Thank you! I love our mare barn. The stalls are 12’ long 16’ deep, perfect size for foaling and also practical for daily use without wasting too much bedding.
