2025 Foal Watch

Or call him Malcom! (The Captain from the show and movie Firefly - played by Nathan Fillion. Highly recommend, if you like sci-fi at all!)

He’s a cutie!

It has been a roller coaster of a week.

On Thursday afternoon, we did Sydney’s 35 day ultrasound. Little one had a healthy heartbeat and looked perfect.

Arielle’s embryo flush was this afternoon. No embryo was recovered, and she blew up with nasty looking fluid AGAIN, despite a clean culture and aggressive pre-and post-breeding lavages and oxytocin. Ugh. The vet said he was sure we were going to be successful until he saw the fluid coming out in the flush and then immediately felt like a deflated balloon. Financially, that’s the end of the road for me trying to get one last foal from her. Good thing she’s such a fun little riding horse. And I’m very grateful to have two daughters out of her still standing in my field.

I dropped Carina off at the vet hospital today. I will be at a conference all week next week, so she’s being left in very capable hands. At her age, I feel better with her in a clinic anyway, especially after what happened with Sydney last year. She handled the trip much better than I expected after how badly she adjusted to moving to my place last spring. She found her water buckets immediately and then started chatting with her new friend one aisle over:

So glad your aged mare is at a clinic! Please keep us posted. :+1:

I am so sorry to hear about Arielle. But hugs, you are right - you do have 2 of her daughters and they are lovely.
I am in no way shape or form into breeding and have no business down that road at all, but if I did, I would clone my mare’s personality. Just to say I have some empathy of what you’re feeling.

Thank you for those very kind words, @Obsidian_Fire.

Carina’s primary vet (it’s a big hospital/clinic) just called with an update. They did a transabdominal ultrasound yesterday evening, and the foal looks good. She’s a little restless but otherwise handling being in the clinic well. Her milk pH is 7 today. It was well over 8.4 two days ago, and her “milk” was still slightly cloudy fluid at that point, so it looks like she might be making a move.

Watch this cagey old girl foal while I’m on a plane for CO tomorrow. That’d be just my luck!

Hop scanned in foal for a ‘26 foal this morning. She’s becoming quite the easy and wonderful broodmare. We’re excited!

Sneaked some pics of Elvis and his foster mom, Tia, this morning. Looks like he is doing fine! Loved getting rubbed from across the fence, and wanted to follow me for more, just a little baby nippy.

@Montanas_Girl I’m so sorry to hear about Arielle but like you said, you have beautiful daughters from her - imagine if you’d only gotten colts!! She has been a super producer for you and i’m so glad you have mares from her that can keep her lineage going. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

@JBCool Elvis is so cute!! :star_struck:

On my end, Arya is at Day 361 today ( :confounded: ) but finally seems to be ready to go. Her pH dropped from 7.9 (Thursday night) to 6.4 (Saturday), her milk was bland and cloudy yesterday and last night she dripped a bit, was restless, her udder is MASSIVE and shiny and this AM turnout crew sent me this pic - she’s WAXED. I think tonight is go time!! Come on, little man! Get with it!

I think I’ve decided on a name for my 2025 filly by VG Juan InaMillion+ out of FCF As You Wish. FCF Ruby Enchantress has all the boldness and and athleticism predicted by her lineage plus a bit of extra sass!!

We’ve had unseasonably cold weather with a bunch of rain, so getting photos has been more challenging than usual. She is two weeks old now. She shows really good balance charging around on what has often been wet slippery grass and uses her body well.

Our first foal “Dibs” (TB) is 3 months old today. It’s amazing to see how much she’s changed in that short time.
