2025 Foal Watch

350 days. And, honestly, she doesn’t really look much different to me today than she did when I dropped her off at the clinic two weeks ago. At that point, I guesstimated she had at least a week or two to go. The vets keep telling me they think she’ll go “in the next few days”, but I’m not seeing it.

She was a little miffed at me for abandoning her for two weeks, but I mollified her with apple bits left over from my lunch. :joy: I did get to watch her ultrasound, and the little one was squirming away in there, so much so that we couldn’t get a good heart rate because he wouldn’t be still long enough. She doesn’t look anywhere near fully bagged up, and her “milk” is still in the salty lemonade stage, but it is surprisingly testing at a pH in the low 7s, so who knows what she has planned?

The vets techs report that she loves her walks and thoroughly enjoyed the bath they gave her a couple of days ago. At least she seems to have settled in reasonably well.

Loving everyone’s foal photos, please keep updating!

I’m also very eager for Carina’s foal to arrive!

Do we have any others still on watch?

That was his first time “leading” in from the field… until last night i’ve been doing the rope around the butt and a hand around his neck - his wittle itty bitty head was too smol for the mini/suckling halter i got him, LOL. I had been introducing the halter in their stall and getting him used to the feeling of having it on and applying the lightest of pressure with the leadrope, but last night was the first time we led him in - and he wanted to be in front… but then yes, he kept checking back to make sure mom was right behind him. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

That first foal shed is always so dramatic! I used to get so excited that we had a liver chestnut, but nope, just another redhead the next coat.

I dropped in to visit Carina again today, day 354. Still no significant signs of progress. She better not be trying to tie Arielle’s 2021 drama!

Finn is just over 2 weeks old now and growing like a weed. Got a cute pic from one of my fellow co-cop boarders yesterday.

Anyone have foals who like to paw a lot? Like a lot a lot? LOL… I’ve just had so many fillies, i’ve never seen a foal paw like him. Like, big stallion-like pawing… outside, inside… alternates which front leg he does it with, doesn’t matter where, when… he does it a bunch. Messes up the bedding and hay in mom’s stall something fierce. :see_no_evil:

Should i be concerned? Or is this just a quirky boy thing?

My first colt copied his mother so anytime she would paw, like at feeding time, he would paw. It did go away and now as a 3 yr old he does not do it, but I always make him back up and wait before dumping feed in his bucket. This has turned into a game of backup- then sneak forward- then backup again.

Mom never paws, it’s not a thing he has learned from her… i just want to make sure it’s not a sign of stress or discomfort…

Our GRP colt is now one month old and doing great! He’s a little powerhouse! Here are some updated photos.
