2025 Foal Watch

:crossed_fingers:

Mom did great. She delivered him in 4 minutes with no assistance.

He is tiny - 20 pounds - and possibly a bit dysmature. He’s up, alert, and nursing, and x-rays of his joints look good. But his kidney enzymes are elevated. He’s on a dummy foal fluid protocol.

He is too cute. Like a little stuffed pony.

My tiny guy was foaled in 2006. When I saw his legs emerging, I knew he was much smaller than normal. He was born at 251 days, so not a remarkably long gestation, but longer than all my other foals have been so far. He was born at my home farm so we didn’t weigh him, but he was small enough that he could run under his dam for at least the first week-10 days! He did need a little extra support the first few days, but thrived and is 19 now.
His first time outside at a few days old.
(BTW, He’s by AM Ghost Ship out of Amira Farah, registered as FCF Gossamer Prince, but we call him “Uncle Prince”)

He’s been the best foal raiser/stallion companion for us. I hope your wee colt has a great outcome too!

My former (as in she is now owned by a fabulous breeder) maiden OTTB foaled out early June with this gorgeous little filly. She’s by a lovely QH stallion who has the best temperament in the world. I have first right of refusal and am currently doing everything in my power to bring her home! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

20lbs? Oh no. Hoping for the best outcome for your mare and foal.

Will you share your former mare’s pedigree and the name of the sire ?

I hope you can claim the filly!

I’d snatch her up, too! Just gorgeous. Also curious about pedigree.

The vet called with an update on Carina and little Patriot about an hour ago. She says he’s looking good, nursing, and getting up and down easily on his own. His 12-hour IgG was only 500, which is considered a partial failure of passive transfer. He got half a liter of plasma early this morning and will get the other half later this evening; they didn’t want to stress his little kidneys by giving it all at once. He will also continue to get IV fluids today, out of an abundance of caution.

If he continues at this pace, he will be ready to come home in 2-3 days.

That tiny is tough. I hope things continue to go well for him!

This evening’s update is that little Patriot’s IgG level is up to normal now. They say he’s doing great and getting spunky.

@skydy the mare’s registered JC is Starla (2014, by In Summation, o/o Richard’s Chick) I think the filly’s sire is a Cash line QH (see pedigree below, I originally had the wrong sire name) One fancy baby! My mare had the smoothest, floatiest gates ever but had an average hind end. The sire really improved that in this foal. She has his hindquarters (and snip!)

It sounds like Carina and Patriot will be able to come home tomorrow. Woo hoo!

@jvanrens, maybe we are a shade closer to liver? She’s shedding out really dark!

@Montanas_Girl, do you have a photo of him standing next to mum? That is just so tiny, I can’t even imagine!

Just don’t get your hopes up on the liver chestnut. First foal sheds are often a lot darker than their adult coat will end up. Yearling shed is a better indicator. It would be an amazing colour for her to end up though.
