2025 Foal Watch

Unless he crashes overnight, they will be coming home tomorrow. I’ll take lots of photos and videos then! The vet today called him “a little race car”. :joy:

She’s cute! Looks like she’ll be gray like mom?

Yep! That’s what the breeder thinks. I I hope she’ll be dark gray for a while though so she can keep her markings, they are striking.

Late to the party (long weekend for us Canucks), but huge congrats @Montanas_Girl on your adorable late arrival!!

We’re home! It was a very long day for me (4 hours on I-40/840 with a trailer is never a fun time), but Patriot handled the trip like a champ. To load and unload on my property, I have to do it in the front yard, right by the road, and then walk the horses down the driveway to/from the barn. Doing that alone with a mare and newborn wasn’t something I was excited about. Patriot jumped/fell right out of the trailer behind his mom with no prompting from me. :joy: He landed unscathed in a heap on the ground. Then he walked along in a figure-8 rope like a perfect gentleman, though I did have to pick him up and carry him across the very scary pavement. It’s a good thing he’s so small!

Better photos this evening, hopefully, when I let them out to stretch their legs and have better light to work with.

Mom is about 14.1. His sire is in the 15.1-15.2 range.

What does the little bugger weigh now?

That I don’t know. His discharge papers say he was exactly 19.7 lbs. at birth. He sure felt like 25 pounds or less when I picked him up - carrying him was not strenuous at all.

Congrats!

First trip outside photos:

The one with the water tank gives the best sense of how tiny he is. Mom only let him stay out about 20 minutes before she was ready to go back in the barn. They should be able to get more outside time in the morning when it’s no so hot.

My house cat weighs more than him! I didn’t know they could be so small! Congratulations

Firefly just came home from his hernia repair surgery and I went ahead and had him gelded. He weighed in at 183 lbs at 7 weeks of age. No idea how much they typically weigh at this age as I don’t usually have access to a scale.

Now he has a week of stall rest and then another week of small paddock rest. Not sure how we are all going to survive that, as he is usually a hyper baby. He trotted all the way to the barn from the trailer and it was all I could do to hang onto him.

I’m a bit sad about getting him gelded but I don’t want a stallion either. This will probably be my last foal, unless I lose a horse or sell someone. My barn is at capacity.

Pictures are from last week.

Anime, by Saketini out of Bodacious Barb, is 2.5 months old now. She’s growing into a very nice filly, quite well balanced and definitely the prettiest head her mother has made yet (thanks, Dad!). I love her big lop ears, she loves having her poll rubbed and those ears just flap when she’s relaxed. She’s learned very quickly to stand tied in the aisle at feed time, eating from her own bucket and just hanging out until her mother is done. We continue feeding the rest of the barn, bringing horses in and out past her, she doesn’t care at all.

She’s lovely - and big!

My 2022 colt had to be confined for similar reasons (a hernia repair which we combined with gelding) at about the same age. I was worried because he had been such a zoomy little guy before but he really didn’t seem stressed as long as he got lots of entertainment. His mom did not enjoy it much but everyone made it through. The hardest part in retrospect was missing out on some prime zoomies-viewing.
