You know, my gramps could be pretty tough on a horse, he was fond of using brooms on the ass and all sorts of things. But he always said you have to be fair about it. I’m pretty sure gramps would take his broom to this guy’s ass in a heartbeat. If you’re not teaching the horse anything than you’re just being a brute.

I am sure some owners are clueless, and some don’t care as they just want results (aka “dead broke horse too afraid to put a foot wrong”). But other than that - I think people just tend to submit to what seems like authority, and people can be afraid to speak up because we’ve been so conditioned to MYOB.
At one of my last boarding barns, there was a “dressage” trainer who near everyone (except his clients) felt was pretty horrible. Big bits in amateur hands, double bridles with running martingales, lots of cranknspank, asking horses to work above their level to their physical detriment, etc. He used to scare the tar out of my horse to the point I couldn’t ride wherever he happened to be teaching. One day he was working a horse in hand, trying to get it to piaffe (iirc), and the poor thing was just so confused. He was basically egging her with the whip but holding her into the wall giving her nowhere to go. She was getting more confused and frantic by the second. She eventually went down, because every other answer she had tried was wrong (they’re very lucky she didn’t choose to go up and/or over). I am horribly ashamed to say I didn’t do anything. I knew it was wrong, I didn’t know what to do. It was a wonderful and brave fellow boarder who called him out. But in the moment I froze. I think that happens to a lot of people, as much as we want to believe we’ll do better. I hope if I’m ever in that situation again that won’t happen. For my horse it’s easy to step in, but for others… MYB is hard to overcome.

I hardly ever wish physical harm on someone - but I wouldn’t be sad if one of the horses he was abusing just couldn’t take it any longer and stomped him.

I read yesterday that animal abuse can now be turned in to the FBI, as if they didn’t have enough to do.

It occurs to me that someone like this could graduate quite easily to abusing other humans, as well. There’s something wrong with this guy. I feel so bad for the horse.
