Another New Horse - It's Bo!

I so wish horses could talk. I want to know, so badly, Bo’s backstory. Do you think you could tell him to hurry up and dish?? You have done incredible with him - he looks amazing. Can’t believe it’s almost a year already.

I just had a chuckle imagining your horse, handing you a wee fish net and standing over you as you learned to properly maintain his Golden Font.

I know, right? I always wish we could have like a 5-10 min conversation, just once a week would be fine. “Hey, just checking in. Anything bothering you? What was up with X the other day? What do you want me to work on? Etc. Great! Talk to you next week.”

You and me both. Sadly for all of us, tracking down the history of an older sorrel QH-type gelding in any region is difficult, nevermind in Texas. They are just a dime a dozen, and he could’ve come from anywhere. I mean, I suppose I could try an animal communicator… that might be fun.

My apologies for the lack of updates lately, folks. Not much has been going on for Bo - I was sick for a week or two, and since then I’ve been scrambling a bit. My original timeline was to wait one more winter and build a nice big barn next year, but that’s just not going to work. My temporary hay storage building is starting to leak, and with having to relocate the freestanding stalls earlier this year the horses are now under water every time we get a big rain. I originally considered building up a pad under the stalls and putting down rock to create a more stable base, and while it would probably work temporarily it’s an investment I’d never get back. Literally throwing money into the mud, which I hate doing.

So, I’m hustling to get a suitable solution figured out, while also trying to consider all the options and not sell my soul to the devil at the bank.

Bo says BUILD ME A BARN, FOOD LADY! There’s a lake in my room!

did he ever get scanned for a chip?

I’m fairly certain he was, but I’d have to go look back at my notes from the vet visits to be 100% sure as it’s been so long ago now.

It’s Monday and I had all these grand plans to ride all the ponies today, but about 15 minutes after the school bus was supposed to have come and didn’t, I realized there’s no school today.

So, instead I will just give you pics from the weekend. We’ll ride tomorrow and maybe I’ll get some video with the Pivo. Yesterday I lunged him and he was looking :fire: :fire: :fire:. I just wish I could unlock those gaits under saddle. He has it pretty firmly in his head that rider + trot = head up jiggy jog, and thinks I must be some kind of unteachable idiot for requesting anything else. I can almost hear his eyes rolling.

Bo demonstrates how good he is at covering himself with mud:

Looking quite shapely. And no, those aren’t ribs, those are either fat rolls or muscle (or both, I have to dig for ribs). His winter coat is coming in pretty well and he’s starting to get pretty dark and plush-y. I am very pleased with his weight as we start going towards “winter”.

And just because, the sunset last night.

As promised, a short video from the better parts of our ride today. Bo was not pleased at first, that we went to the field of boring circles instead of out bush whacking, but after some discussion and a few reminders I was really happy with how things came together towards the end. It doesn’t look like much but I appreciate that he humors me on the odd days I decide we need to “school” stuff and not just bop around the field having fun like I’m a kid on a pony. If I want to be “serious”, I have other horses for that.

Speaking of which, I better go ride another one.

Don’t mind me, I’ve always been a little noodle-y in the midsection when I sit the trot. I’m working on it.

What a great update! Thank you for keeping us in the loop. I hope you’re all recovered from your sick spell. You and Bo are looking good!

Feronia is a more sporty mover, unless something excites her, and then she will pick up her feet like a show horse. Her gaits are really comfortable. Her breeding is Brunk and Western on the bottom, good old New England lines on top, like Parade, Kingston etc.

Lola - well I’m not sure yet but she’s not a flashy mover. She’s a bit tense in her back but we’ll work on that. She does cover some ground, without being speedy.

A friend’s Morgan mare, pure show bred and one of the last from Dr. Bob Orcutt senior, came out 14 hands and not a high stepper at all, but she’s a little more alert and prancy.

They’re all different. So many different breeding programs now.

I want to know where you got your giant Jolly Ball. Ours got popped by an over-enthusiastic gelding and I cannot find a replacement that is large enough for the cover.

Chewy generally has all of the sizes, up to 40". I’ve seen them on Amazon as well.

Yup, Chewy. There are several sizes, though, so hopefully your cover has a size tag on it? I want to say mine is the biggest one.

Bo says he’s too old to play with “toys” and told me off the one time I tried to introduce the idea that we could push it around, but the others have a good time with it. It escaped the paddock the other day and I just haven’t rolled it back up the hill yet.

Just popping in to drop this off, because he’s such a beast. :star_struck:

Hard to believe it’s the same horse.

I love the music. Do you know what it is?

It’s just labeled ‘string arpeggio’, it’s one of the free music choices in the video editor on my laptop. I’d love to use a wider variety of music! But I’m not willing to pay when I’m just making documentation videos for fun. I was originally just going to upload the first clip as a short on youtube (which allows access to a lot more music), but I forgot that it is designed for portrait-mode videos.

The difference from when you first got him is stunning. He’s certainly not hurting for groceries.

Well done you!
