Anybody know their TB's racing name?
Where did Unconscious Bets race? I have a 9-year-old gelding who ran in Northern California briefly. A lot of good OTTB eventers come out of Norcal - St. James Place and Hallowed Envoy to name a couple.
Wow sorry, I totally missed this! He raced on central/norther california tracks for the most part (the cheap tracks, no bay meadows or anything). Sacramento, santa rosa, fresno, and others.

I have my OTTB’s papers, no races on record.

how many of ya’ll have OTTB’s but not their papers?

My two guys

Flagstone Blue 2000 (Personal Flag x Stone of Blue)

Colonial War 1983 (Faraway Son x Carduel)

Here’s what I have at home right now. They all came from the North Cal tracks. I try and talk with their old trainers when I can, they seem to like hearing their old warriors are living the good life.

Patrick’s Slew (1997 Slewpy X Ms Bop Out 31 lifetime starts 5-2-8) he had the best record of any of my horses as he started his career down in So. Cal. breaking his maiden at Hollywood Park. He had fantastic connections, he was trained by Doug O’Neill and owned by two of Doug’s brothers. Well let’s say he never became a Lava Man and ended up in northern Cal. Raced until he was 7 and retired sound.

Puff of Smoke (2003 Comic Strip X Cinder Girl 12 lifetime starts 2-0-1) sweetest horse that acts far older then his years, how he lasted a year on the track is beyond me. Started in Greg Gilchrist barn and went downhill from there. Russell Baze remembers him as the horse that fell on his nose in his first outing. Yes, thats the Puff man (sigh).

Fu Man Slew (2002 Corslew X Squire Out Front 23 lifetime 2-3-3) he retired due to a slab fracture but one of his old trainers got a hold of him as he was heading to a really ugly ending. He sent him to me and now it’s 7 months post surgery and he’s sound. Thee coolest horse ever born, which is why his old trainer kept tabs on him, he also knew he had a sucker in me and I would spend the time and the money to rehab him.

Love my OTTB’s. I have my eyes on another one I’m trying to get a hold of when he retires. It’s kind of addicting

Fu Man Slew

I loved your FIRST namesake…
He was a dark bay gelding who raced in SoCal. Was a minor stakes horse and REALLY fast. A good friend of mine trained him for awhile until he got claimed away. He started having physical problems, we tried to buy him but were turned down, and he wound up breaking a hind leg in a race. Horrible, just horrible.
Did your guy ran at Los Al by any chance or in NorCal? I do remember seeing there was another Fu Man running a while back and was surprised the name was available so soon.

my one horse Oz raced as Insterburg, he was born in '95, his sire is Woodman, and his dam is Lasting Secret. i had his jockey club papers at one point, but they got put in a ā€˜safe place’ and i’m not sure where that safe place is. I think he broke his maiden, but am not positive.

my other one Quincy is Ever Cat’n, he was also born in '95, his sire is Mountain Cat(by Storm Cat) and his dam is Wajima Street(by Wajima), he broke his maiden, but that is about all i know.

where can you get all their old info and win pictures(if they won)???

I happen to know R.Huey a bit because I know his owner. He was from one of the first crops of Time for a Change who was a vey well bred Phipps horse by Damascus out of Resolver. As a 3 year old Time for a Change was considered one of the better prospects for the Tripple Crown that year along with Devil’s Bag. Unfortunately he got a serious flu bug and missed all the triple crown races. He was coming back that winter when he suffered a condular fracture in a morning work. I was working for the vet who performed the surgery on him, Dr. Stephen Selway. I was his anesthetist, At that time, Time for a Change was the most expensivelly insured horse to go under the knife! Talk about nerve wracking. Time for a Change was a lovely great big chestnut horse with a superb disposition. He was never agressive or nippy to handle. In the stall you could handle him withjust a shank. One of my favorite patients, so I followeed Huey’s career with interest.

Yes, my Fu ran up north at Bay Meadows, Golden Gate and the fairs. I to was surprised at the name being used to quickly, the other one was around 91-93 something like that.

Reese’s racing/JC registered name is ā€œShowcased.ā€

1999 or 2000 model, PA or MD bred, by In Case, out of Temeka (aka Pleasant Surprise).

don’t know really anything about his racing history, I think he may have won one race and I was told that at one point he just wouldn’t leave the starting gate… I was also told that he was won in a claiming race (in Charleston, WV I think) in 2004 by the woman I bought him from (in 2005).

It’s a longshot, but if anyone knows anything about him, I’d love to hear it!

(approx. 15.2, dark bay, off-center stripe, snip and a wall-eye )

Mines Easy!

My OTTB is Just Walter! A homebred I was lucky enough to buy as a 4 year old. He was slated as a stakes horse then he was gelded. Poor guy…good for me!

I kept his show name Just Walter too, who can change that and it fits him so well!

Wow! It makes me so happy to read all of that. :) I really liked him and wanted to take him to my barn but didn’t have time and had too many other going horses at that time. I knew he was in good hands in NC and knew he’d been sold into good hands, but I still think of him and wondered how he was doing.

Thanks for posting about it!

I have three but only know about 2 of them.

One is a FL bred 1988 born gelding named Naked Prospect.

The other is a Canadian bred 1998 gelding named Materofcutness.

Move Over Moon: FL bred, '86 model, If This Be So x Miss Moona. He raced in Wisconsin, and never won a thing.

I don’t have his papers, but got his name & race record through his tattoo (which was very clear when I got him many moons ago). His show name is ā€œJude the Obscureā€ (since we didn’t know anything about him or his past when I got him!); barn name is ā€œJude.ā€

Glowing Prospect - a 97 model - raced 13 times and won a whopping $2,650!!! She likes her new life better…

Mythical (aka Lissell) 1998 Mare by Pass the Glass out of Tisza. Not a successful race horse, but has been pretty successful at everything else.

Wild About Harry: 2001 gelding by Wild Rush out of Ashlea’s Debut. This guy was much more successful. He raced 29 times and earned $60k. And now he’s my super star event horse in the making.

General Commander (Ch. gelding, blaze, four white socks, foaled 2000), raced at 2, 3, and 4 years old but only ran 4 - 5 times in Louisiana, won one  , came third in another, won close to $20K. I’ve only had him since April, but am enjoying him!

I have evented several over the years.
Three of them came from Charlestown, WV.
They are Casey’s Revenge 1995 mare. I took her intermediate. She competed with them name Vanity Fair.
Reality Sets In 1996 gelding. I took him prelim under his race name.
Iron County by Gulch. He went training under the name Jive Talkin and then was sold out to CA.
I also rode Slew City Princess at prelim and Gotta Do (competed under Native Son) at prelim.
Amy

ā€œHot Redheadā€ā€¦2002 mare by Believe the Queen. She’s had a babe and is now starting eventing - we’ll keep Hot Redhead for her new career too!

This is fun

Madera Man (1971)- I can’t remember his sire offhand, but his dam was Madera (hence the ā€˜cool’ name ). He won a whopping $1000 and something on the track; he really wasn’t into racing. He was the gentlest, kindest guy who put up with a crazy 12 y.o. and carried me around my first 4’ course. He would have made an extraordinary jumper except for the fact that where I lived as a kid (NM) it was all hunters, all the time so we were fish out of water and have lots of green and pink ribbons to show for it .

Black Stat (1988)- Dr Stat X Black Heart by Stuz Blackhawk. He won $41,418 and placed in a Black Type race before going downhill and finishing last in $1500 claimers. His previous owner outbid the meat man. He went on to be a successful jumper and is now living the retired life as a trail horse and companion. Oh, and he is chestnut .

Unknown (1993)- I never could figure out what the last number of his tattoo was. I managed to narrow him down to two horses, both the same age and color and I never got any further because I sold him.

KaDe’s Tyberious (1995)- Terrific Son X Dancing Sugar by Dancing Count. Never raced and not tattooed.

1998 Hay Kevin (yuck, I know!) from Haymaker X Noble and Good.
