Breeders Cup 2022 - Keeneland

Yeah, I’ve seen a couple on YouTube. Having read several books about Big Red, I’ve been thrilled to see the films.

That was so exciting! Is it stupid that I teared up watching that amazing performance?

And I’m so happy for John Sadler, a former Flintridge jumper rider. (Carbon dating myself).

You misunderstood. They said he was placed in a splint. Not that he injured his splint

Confirmation that it’s a “serious” pelvic fracture.

Update on Epicenter

Epicenter has a lateral condylar fracture and will have surgery at Rood & Riddle tomorrow.

Interesting, Flavian experienced both the highs and lows of racing riding, probably, the last races in the careers of two horses for totally opposite reasons.

That’s why I mentioned that Barbara Banke couldn’t lose. With all the runners by her stallion (Curlin) and all the runners she has bred from her mares, she had a great day!

Call me selfish but my fingers are crossed that Flightline runs in the Pegasus at least so I get a chance to see him in person. I have seen all the “big” horses of the last 25 years, would be a shame not to see the biggest.

The only horses I’ve known to have pelvic injuries, had been caused by some kind of trauma. Such as a fall or being cast in a stall & struggling.

How often do horse sustain pelvic fractures/injuries when participating in a race?
Or is this something that possibly could have been brewing ahead of time?

You and me both…and I can drive to see that race now. And will if he runs. Don’t know where else he would start and against who. But will pay to see it.

Probably not life threatening, unless there are surgical complications.
Great racing stats, great breeding–if surgery goes well, off to the shed!
Best wishes to Epicenter for a good recovery and a long life.

Agreed, though I had fervently hoped he’d be back on the track at four I am relieved that Epicenter’s prognosis appears optimistic.

I am far more worried about Domestic Spending. It sounds bad, and if they can’t get him comfortable then the only kind thing to do is euthanize. Pelvic fractures, as most here probably know, can’t be treated surgically and it’s 100% confinement to the stall until fully healed. Shared Belief (bless his memory) recovered from one. Charismatic unfortunately did not, and I remember a lovely stakes filly named Look Daggers in the late 90’s who hung on for months in a sling before they finally had to euthanize.

There’s no way to immobilize the pelvis - every step the horse takes exerts force on it.

Yes about Domestic Spending. Sounds bad.

That was the first time I’ve watched racing live since 2018 (last phone call I had with a dying friend was during justifys Belmont) after that it was too hard and only replays

Watching the races today (and the thrills with the nose filly win and flightline) brought some of that excitement back to me
Just can’t fully relax till I know domestic spending and epicenter are ok

Charismatic recovered from a career ending lower leg injury in 1999, remember the jockey (Chris Antley?) hopping off immediately after passing under the wire dropping to knees cradling the leg and sobbing? If Charismatic had not suffered a fractured lower foreleg mid stretch in that Belmont after winning the KD and the Preakness he very well could have won the TC. Hanging on for 3rd with a bum leg took guts. But no pelvic injury.

Charismatic ended up at Old Friends in 2017 after returning from a stud career. Unfortunately he just woke up dead one morning shortly after arriving and is buried there.

Regarding the Keeneland bugler-- yes, that is the song he always plays for every race day, not the traditional “Call to the Post” that you hear at every other track.

It was at Old Friends that Charismatic broke his pelvis. It was a bad break and severed an artery; he bled out. They found him dead in his stall. :sob:

Yeah – but that was particularly severe (severed artery??). It is long-term stall rest, but I am barnmates with one that did the longterm stallrest and recovered just fine, and a good friend had a similar issue. There are rehab centers that are set up for that type of recovery as long as it isn’t impacting other things.

Text communication is hard, thought you were referring to the fracture Charismatic suffered as a 3 year old on the track and comparing it to the injury suffered by young DS mid race today.

Don’t think a fractured pelvis is the result of a “ bad step”. Hmmmm….do know of an imported WB Jumper, maybe 20 years ago, who arrived never quite right after what the shipper called a “rough flight”. Diagnostics were not yet what we have today, couldn’t find anything wrong. Rested it for awhile as a precaution. Never a lame step in 1.3m jumpers just a little wonky at times, several years later new imaging revealed a pelvic fracture.
