California Chrome?

It doesn’t appear that anyone was claimed out of this race. You can check the Equibase results chart for claims along with claiming price.

I looked at his times listed for the race but honestly they’re Greek to me. I haven’t found a replay so I can’t see his running style or that of the other 2 year olds.Do you think he was unusually fast or was his competition slow? Being two year olds I expect it takes a few races to see if they have talent. 12 and 1/2 lengths is quite a margin of victory though.

The fractions are kind of average for a six furlong race on dirt. The final time of 1:13.23 would be considered slow–but the horse was so far ahead of the field in the stretch (6 lengths widening to 12 and 1/2) that there was obviously no need to push him for more speed.

After this win, I assume his next race will be against higher caliber competition, and it should be a better indicator of what he’s capable of doing.

There is a replay up on the TwinSpires site. Though you have to register to watch.
he got hung out a bit wide & then showed a nice turn of foot when asked to run, nothing fancy… overall it was a honest & very clean race for a bunch of babies.

I’ve been told that the very first races of 2 year olds are not indicative of their talent in the future. They need time to learn don’t they, unless they refuse to run outright ?

I looked up this race because it sounded fun to have two California Chromes in the same race but Uncle Roy, who finished last in the race won by Charles Chrome, is listed on Equibase as a grey gelding by Monba out of Jackie’s Lady Luck. Is that an error or did I read your post wrong?

Honestly I didn’t look up Uncle Roy. I was basing my comment on what Denise Martin had been saying… guess I should have double checked LOL
I’ll amend my other post 😊

It’s on YouTube.

That link goes to a replay of the Derby. Not the race we are discussing. 😊

Oops…

Although I have gotten the impression from listening to the TVG personalities that some trainers will bring ‘very ready’ 2YOs to their first race while other trainers do use the first race for experience.

Running style definitely seems to show up more as a horse races… rate-ability, route, sprint, 2 turn miles, etc. I think some of that doesn’t always show up in the morning but in the races.

It really depends. Some trainers have a horse more fit and sharp for their first race than others do. Plus, horses are all different too, especially the babies. Some get overwhelmed by the experience (even the paddock experience sometimes). Some gawk at everything and never settle down and really run. Some are professional right from the start–and some are so good that even if they don’t run well, they still simply outclass the rest of the field.

Don’t forget, too, that first races are often guesswork on the part of the trainer. Is this a dirt horse or a turf horse? Does he want to go short or long? You can make assumptions based on looks, pedigree, and what you see in the morning–but horses can pretty easily make you look like an idiot. We once bred a mare that I was sure was going to want to run long on turf. Turned out her sweet spot was 6f on polytrack.

Even horses that will eventually be asked to run long, usually make their first start in a shorter race. Just because it’s easier for a baby to concentrate for 5-6 furlongs than it is for them to do so for 1 1/16 miles. So, first races are often a learning experience for both the horse and the trainer.

It would be interesting to know his breeding. He looked pretty comfortable in that race.

Thechromeweknow… By Calfornia Chrome out of Theworldweknow (Speightstown) so decent pedigree. Dam raced 5 times in 2015 with one second at Canterbury Park in MSW on the turf at about 7 1/2 f.

Half to Marylebone,5 starts, placed once, earned $6,122.00 Has an unraced American Pharoah 3 year old and 2019 C.C. filly. Owned by Perry Martin?

It’s nice to see that some of his foals are doing well. Maybe he’ll turn out to be a decent sire after all.

In other words, for me, nothing really to write home to mom about

I know they all can’t be graded stakes winners but I also take into consideration the race condition, track and earnings.

I wonder what CC’s get are like as sport horses. While he didn’t ring my chimes as a race horse, always thought he was striking looking.

He’ll get better mares in Japan. Then we’ll see.
