Can we start a "safe" dogfood list?

Nutrisca
Nutrisca worries me as it is made by Dogswell who uses chicken from China in all their jerky. No, they have not had a recall on it but so far despite the FDA warnings about the chinese chicken jerky products, no recalls have been issued.

The food says it is made in the USA but are they getting their dried meat-meals from a USA source as well?

I have always heard good things about Fromm. I feed my dogs Solid Gold–have fed it for the 6 years I’ve had my older dog and 1 year I’ve had my younger dog. My dachshunds both have excellent coats and skin and have never had issues with it…

Solid Gold is manufactured by Diamond, in the same plant as all the recalled food. I don’t believe there have been any recalls issued for them, but it might just be a matter of time…

Their calcium levels are waaaay too high for puppies, though. :-/
I need clarification on this. I thought that because puppies are shedding puppy teeth and growing in adult teeth that they needed more calcium. My breeder recommends that I add yogurt to the diet to give additional calcium. The ears go wonky during the teething phase folks say that’s because the calcium is going to the teeth production and away from the cartilage in the ears…I hear that a lot but don’t know if there is any science behind it.

Back to the topic at hand. My girl has significant GI issues and does well on the NB LID Salmon and Sweet Potato kibble. I recently switched her to Wellness Core and she went back to bloody stools and throwing up. So Wellness isn’t an option for us. So far the NB food that I feed Isnt part of the recall. But it is perplexing. There are no other limited ingredient foods with only salmon and no chicken, beef or lamb in them… I suppose if my kibble becomes part of the recall then Ill have to switch to novel protien lid diet. Like bison, deer, rabbit or kangaroo.

chicken, Lamb and beef free

Nature’s variety Salmon meal fits the bill:

Back to Basics?

Is anyone feeding this? We have 3 dogs currently on the turkey formula - the two older hound mixes are doing very well, but the 2yr old aussie mix is losing his hair in small clumps.
We’ve only had him for about 3 mos, so I don’t know for sure what is normal for him, but his hair loss seems to have escalated in the time we’ve been feeding this (about 7-8 weeks).
We started feeding Back to Basics after trying TOTW, because the beagle mix was losing HIS hair on that. His coat has been shiny and nice since switching to BtB, but I don’t know what to do for the aussie.
My vet is no help on this - she had never heard of BtB, and suggested feeding Science Diet, which she sells, of course.

Except that it has herring, menahaden fish, pork liver, tapioca, pea starch, coconut oil, and a few other things that I’ll have to test Individually with my dog first to see if she reacts to iThat or just switch her over like I did on the wellness in a month and see if I end up back at the vets… That was the beauty of the NB food. It only has salmon, sweet potato, canola oil and flax seed in it. I could feed my dog salmon for 2 weeks, no reaction then add sweet potato for another week. Then if no reaction I knew that I could transition her over off the vet prescribed HA foods to the NB kibble. Nothing else has limited ingredients that fall within our little food allergy/intolerance/IBD/h.pylori issue.

Also Pinnacle Trout: http://www.pinnaclepet.com/Canine/dog_food_trout.htm

Well you didn’t mention it needed to be THAT limited  Normally I’m all for the switch the food to see how they would be but in your case I’d almost fork over the $300 to get the allergies tested. What is on the list of definate no and definate yes?

Iam’s Kangaroo and Oat, Royal Canin Rabbit and Potato. Both diets are formulated by board certified DVM veterinary nutritionists, AAFCO food trial tested and the plants do not run any other diets through their machines other than the limited ingredient diet so you know your allergic dog will not receive any other allergens in the diet.

Perhaps I’m a naive idealist, but isn’t this likely the safest time to feed one of these brands as the companies are laser-focused on safety right now and don’t want to risk any more illnesses and/or bad press?

Granted, I’m in CA so I haven’t been effected by this recall.

NutriSource is a good quality kibble & not made or owned by Diamond. I switched all my dogs/puppies over when my local stores pulled ALL Diamond manufactured food off their shelves. I couldn’t get my normal kibble & needed something.

Have never heard of NutriSource but took a quick glance at their website - it looks very good. So does their Natural Planet Organics. Too bad they don’t sell it near me (but hey, a little drive won’t hurt anyone and we’ll be able to explore some new pet stores ).

Thanks for the info. on a new (to me) premium food.

I think that their grain free Salmon and Potato kibble is the winner! Only odd things are Quinoa and egg product. But I have both at home to try out and I’ll see. I so hate the NB sweet potato and Salmon, it’s mostly potato and not alot of protein. Thanks a bunch for mentioning a food that I’d never heard of before!

I just got off the phone from talking with a rep at one of the online pet food companies about an order and they were telling me that this particular company has had to staff shifts for 24 hours a day since the recall came out to keep up with the orders. I had thought they would be busy, but I didn’t think it would be that crazy. I guess as more and more names are added to the list though, people are having to order from online more because their area stores don’t stock anything else (like mine).

Glad you were able to find something that looks like it will work! I fed Pinnacle Peak for some time and liked it quite a bit–the food was consistently good with no issues. I only switched because we needed a trial of a novel protein source, and their novel options were too low in calories for my dog. We wound up with Orijen 6 Fish instead. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back to Pinnacle!

what do you guys think about this one? Is it a safe one?

How crappy is it?

http://nutrish.rachaelray.com/products/just6

Sooooo low in protein. It’s got to be nearly all rice with only 20% protein.

(I couldn’t find this info for lamb meal, but the protein content of chicken meal is 65%. Lamb has got to be in the same ballpark. Consider how LITTLE meat is in there to hit that 20% protein number.)

Can’t say if it’s safe or not without knowing who makes it.

I’ve used the Rachel Ray stuff as my back up. If you’re concerned about the protein crack an egg in it.
