Selena has been consistent for years and this horse can perform in all phases. If he is ready to go then this would be the straw to break the camels back and should absolutely destroy EC. Who the hell decided they could represent Canads for us… this organization is a sham. The only way this would be acceptable is if the horse was injured in the last week and unable to perform. We are finding out this is not the case…
I saw Woody go at Great Meadow, and he looked pretty darned good…just sayin’…
What a damn shame. I feel so sorry for Selena and her mom, and for Woody’s owners.
I feel sad for all of them - the team emotions need to be pumped to produce their best and have team spirit. I know when they are there it will come together because of the atmosphere in general, and they will pull together, but i could be so much more, and so much more special.
Same as the hoo-ha in the dressage…just too darned complicated.
Once a team is named, are there rules or specified grounds upon which the alternate may be named? I.e. Does it have to be a vet reason or can it be a ‘we changed our mind’ reason?
I would presume that once the games are under way the named team has to remain as is, unless a horse hurts itself before the first jog?
- sorry, out of the house and I can’t research this on my iPhone -

I agree.
I just shake my head at the mess this has been.
The information that has come out due to Jessica’s appeal, and now this.
It has to make everyone involved very discouraged.

Don’t know the exact rules, but yes there comes a moment in time “no more substitutions”. Any drops at that point incur 1,000 penalty points for the team. Since the score is the best 3 individuals of 4 team members, the first withdrawal/elimination becomes the drop score. After that, it will be part of the team score.
I don’t know when is the last date for substitutions. If the substitutes did not travel to Rio, I suppose it is effectively when the team departs for Rio.
fEI Rule for substition at the OG
SUBSTITUTIONS (Please refer to the Late Athlete
Replacement Policy (LAR))
- Substitutions will only be allowed in the event of an accident or illness of an Athlete and/or Horse on the presentation of the appropriate Medical/Veterinary certificate and the permission of the Chief Medical Officer and/or the Veterinary Commission.
- Substitutions can only be made with another Athlete or Horse that has obtained the minimum eligibility standard for participation according to the relevant Rules and that was duly entered on the list of nominated entries of 20 June 2016.
And here is the IOC Late Athlete Replacement Policy
IOC Sports department as of 19August 2015

LATE ATHLETE REPLACEMENT POLICY FOR THE RIO 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES
This policy will apply to Athletes of National Olympic Committees attending the Games of the XXX Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro 2016
(the Rio 2016 Games’)
The deadline for the Final Entries list of participating Athletes in the Rio 2016 Games (sport entries deadline) is 23:59 Rio de Janeiro time (GMT -4) 18 July 2016.
After the sport entries deadline, the Late Athlete Replacement policy comes into force, and will be strictly enforced. Late Athlete Replacement may only occur up to the relevant sport/discipline/event Technical Meeting,
unless otherwise stated in the sport specific appendix (Appendix 1). This policy is only applicable for those sports/disciplines where the quota place has been allocated to the NOC.
For those sports/disciplines in which the quota place is allocated
by name to an Athlete a specific slot reallocation deadline has been included in the Qualification Systems per discipline.
From 19 July 2016 00:00 Rio de Janeiro time (GMT-4) the Rio 2016 Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (Rio 2016) may authorise a permanent replacement of an Athlete by another Athlete in the same sport, discipline and event.
Each decision will be made after consultation with the relevant
International Federation (IF), and its respective Medical expert and, when deemed appropriate, the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Such replacement will only occur where there are urgent medical conditions preventing participation of an Athlete, or otherwise on a case-by-case basis for exceptional circumstances.
Late Athlete Replacement is possible only provided that:
*The replacement Athlete meets the eligibility conditions and qualification criteria to take part in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, as stipulated in the “Qualification Systems–Games of the XXXI Olympiad–Rio de Janeiro 2016” per sport/disciplines published in 2014, and regularly updated by the IOC;
*The NOC of the replacement Athlete had applied successfully for accreditation for the Athlete prior to 29 April 2016 (accreditation application deadline). As such, the replacement Athlete has been registered by Rio 2016 in the “NOC’s Athlete
Accreditation Long List”; and
- No doping control issues are pending concerning the replacement Athlete.
In addition, the following procedure must be followed and the required forms submitted within the timeframe stated in this policy:
-
The “Late Athlete Replacement Form” must be completed by the relevant NOC, for the Athlete being replaced and the replacement Athlete; and
-
The “Sport Entry Form” must be completed and submitted by the relevant NOC, for the replacement Athlete; and
-
The “Eligibility Conditions Form (ECF)” including the “Parental/Legal Guardian Acknowledgement for Minors” form must be completed and submitted by the relevant NOC for
the replacement Athlete. The NOC must submit a scanned copy of the ECF electronically and bring the original, signed and stamped to Rio 2016 ACR Offices. -
The accreditation card of the replaced Athlete must be returned to an Accreditation Centre, in order to allow for entitlements to be transferred to the replacement Athlete. Following the transfer, the replaced Athlete’s accreditation will be deactivated unless the replacement was by a P athlete, in which case entitlements may be swapped upon the decision of the NOC. Applications with missing information will not be processed.
P alternate Athletes:
Before the sport specific deadlines set in Appendix 1, the NOCs have the possibility to activate their P alternate athletes or to use a replacement from the long list. During the competition, As per the “Accreditation at the Olympic Games–Detailed specifications” the NOCs can activate P alternate athletes in the following sports and disciplines:
Athletics, Cycling BMX, Cycling Track, Equestrian, Fencing, Handball, Football, Hockey, Rowing, and Table Tennis.
In case a P alternate Athlete should be in need of a Late Athlete
Replacement, NOCs will be allowed to replace the Athlete with another P, before the start of competition, by applying the above LAR process.
All documentation and queries regarding this matter should be addressed to Rio 2016 Sports Entries.
NOCs may submit a Late Athlete Replacement Form with all relevant documentation by e-mail or in person to:
Rio 2016-Sport Entries Office at the Welcome Centre in the Olympic Village Tel: +5521-20165287
Hotline: +5521-20166656
E-mail:
olympicsportsentries@rio2016.com
This policy is subject to further change by the IOC for exceptional circumstances.
Wonderful, thanks Viney!
So if I’m reading this correctly, they had to say Woody or Selena were “ill” to make the substitution. Changing their mind during training camp would not be permitted.
Poor Selena. I’m not sure how she got wrapped up in this mess but I really feel for her. This should be such an exciting time and instead we have shadows of gloom multiplying…
Has it been confirmed that Selena’s horse is sound? I know there was the one post claiming that he was sound, but that’s all I’ve seen.

Even if he is sound, I imagine we won’t ever get confirmation that he’s sound because that would cause trouble for everyone involved.
I assume that Selena is under a gag order one way or the other. From the supreme anger I’ve seen in the comments under a few if the articles, there are at a minimum, a few supporters who think they know he’s sound. Whether that’s because they’re close enough to know the truth or here just speculating, we’ll never know. So far the EC parties in this whole disaster haven’t exacty shown themselves capable of successfully carrying out a nefarious plot without rumors at least getting out.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t EC step in a part own a horse for Selena a few years ago? Could explain why they felt they could do this to her without fear of being challenged.
As I said earlier, what I want to know is whether anything has changed wrt his soundness since the ruling removing KR from the team.
NCR I am wondering where you are seeing these comments, I would be interested in reading them

They didn’t just do this to her, they did it to all of us. Removing arguably our strongest horse/rider combination from the team for alleged nefarious reasons hurts all of us, though obviously on a completely different level than poor Selena.
Gag order or not, I cannot imagine someone not telling a best friend in confidence, who then shares the info w someone else in confidence and so on until it trickles down to the rest of us, though likely in some distorted form.
Fundamentally the lack of information is what is raising eyebrows and suspicions. If this happened in the ‘normal’ way, none of us would think something is up. I.e. We were at training camp, Woody clipped himself/abscess/50M ways horse hurt themselves… Unfortunately we are out. Happened with Maya Black and was simply accepted.
There have been no reports - from Selena or eye witnesses/connections/people at training camp and just around - that anything has happened to Woody. Other than EC stating replacement for vet reasons. The silence, coupled with friends saying he looked/is fine, make the whole situation extremely suspicious. By why is Selena the target?? Jessie can’t be touched as she already beat them with the appeal. If there was some sort of promise made to KR, that leaves Selena or Colleen. Clearly Colleen is better connected or simply liked by CF as Selena is the one potentially being picked on.
Above being said, Woody could just be lame.
Yes EC did buy or partially buy a horse for her, it may have even been this one. Can’t remember. She also gets a salary as part of the fun that 4* riders in Canada get. I can’t remember what it’s called or the criteria but I remember Hawley Bennet was going to lose it after Gin N Juice went to a new rider. She probably wouldn’t want to jeoproadize that either. They kind of have a hold on her.
Peter Barry owns Colleens horse and he helps fund the teams travel from what I have heard in the past. Politics much?

No, Woody is bred and owned by John Rumble.

Owned, not bred. There was an article recently in Horse Sport about him buying Woody. I’m pretty sure he was bred by King Ridge/Hugh Graham.

Thanks for clarifying. Can’t remember which horse it was then.
I really don’t want this swept under the rug with the excitement of the games. I just think of how Selena must be feeling
Presently, I think this needs to be “put to bed” for now - as a nation we need to get behind our athletes in Rio and support them in whatever way we need to. Our athletes NEED to know that they are all supported AND their support team NEEDS to be supported - regardless of how you are feeling regarding the selection process - that is a discussion (and not mud-slinging) for another timel This is what we have and we need to be proud of each of them!
Selena is a wonderful rider, a tremendous role model and a greater person - maybe she is on a gag order (but that is all conjecture) AND just maybe, just maybe Selena is being the true team member that I know she is - supporting the people who are there in Rio despite her own huge disappointment. And that is why so many people look up to her - a true Canadian athlete who I am so very proud of. I also feel for the Rumbles and for Anne-Marie and Morag, but not one of them are displaying their own upset on social media.
Go Canada Go! All of you make us so proud and I for one, am behind the team who is in Rio including their coach!
