Canadian Olympic Team - who do you pick?

I wouldn’t go either… no mater how big my Olympic dreams were.
She probably didn’t, I feel like the teams are all but an open secret at the moment. CBC all but confirmed the show jumping team repeatedly today, plus it was very obvious as the team was already on a plane to Aachen (Which was then confirmed by Mark Laskin as the Olympic team). Mark himself almost spilled the beans but then caught himself saying that the Aachen team was the Olympic team and thus he wouldn’t name it. But at least they seem to know for sure which is more the I can say for the poor Dressage and Eventing riders.
A little off topic from the main thread perhaps, but when I watched this interview with Mark I think I sprayed whatever I was drinking at the time all over my living room floor! I don’t know if it was on purpose or not, but I’m not upset one bit if he decided not to abide by the ridiculous gag order from EC.

My thoughts on this: hopefully it blows up in EC’s face.
I’m posting my comment here as it doesn’t seem to show up below the article:

“I know i am not alone in hoping the shady dealings at the top of the sport in Canada have come to light and influenced this decision. It’s clear Equine Canada is not in a position to police itself, but wouldn’t it be a relief to discover that the Office of Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada is now aware of the state of affairs and willing to take action…?”

I don’t think I would want to go to Rio.

I see Maya Black just withdrew her horse as the travelling alternate.
Her whole FB post.

It is with a heavy heart that I am withdrawing Cody from his position as traveling reserve for the US Olympic team. Unfortunately, he has sustained an acute minor injury. Being named as the traveling reserve has been the greatest achievement and honor of my career to date, and I couldn’t have asked for a more special partner then Cody to share this journey with for the past 5 years. I hope to one day be back in a position for team consideration again, and in the meantime he will get some much deserved rest after a stellar spring season. I want to thank so many people and horses for getting me to this place. To even be considered for the Olympics is a dream come true- I’m so incredibly grateful. Thank you to the Dofelmier’s for bringing him into my life, to all our family, friends, coaches, sponsors, supporters, and many fans for helping us to make it this far. And last but definitely not least, thanks to Caitlin for putting up with Cody and I over the last few years through the thick and thin. I love Cody so much-this amazingly talented munchkin horse will be back to fight again another day.
??

On a related note, I’ve been following the sailing issues down in Rio and besides the fact they have done nothing to clean up the bay where sailing will take place, water which as reported by the AP a teaspoon could be enough to give you some nasty infection, sailors getting to and from the venue have been mugged and shots were heard outside the venue.

What with all the unrest, Zika; I’d ponder the value in going as well. People may have been told the stables were cleaned of a nasty equine bug and tested, but this is the same corrupt organization that said the bay would be cleaned in time for sailing/rowing/swimming.

I bet there will be some fallout from the JP decision so that will be interesting reading in the near future.

I can’t find any comments under the article. My computer Ghostery blocks them but I can override the block. When I attempt to do so, the article comes up with no comments.

I find the concept of an appeal to a Team Selection that hasn’t officially been named ludicrous in the extreme.

Could be my fault. I just had a friend say they couldn’t see my comment either. I may be blocked from posting on Eventing Connect for arguing with them about head injury statistics in the past…

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the subtlety here is that the team has been named but not announced. The riders were notified, but advised that they should keep it to themselves.

A little off topic from the main thread perhaps, but when I watched this interview with Mark
Mark who? Where? (Thanks!)

Very sorry for whoever gets pulled from the team if all this is confirmed, but yet at the same time pleased for JP.

Mark Laskin, the chef d’equipe for the show jumping team. They have also picked the team, but not officially announced. The broadcast of the Queen E Cup at Spruce Meadows completely leaked the team though because CBC talked incessantly about the team in Aachen, and in an interview asked Mark about it. He almost named the team but then stated that the Aachen team was the Olympic team so he couldn’t name it. It was just funny in the face of this ridiculous EC gag order on announcing the team.

I don’t even get how you can appeal not being named… I mean there are selectors for a reason.

This thread reads like a novel - but you can’t make this stuff up.

Next question - who is NOT going from the list - perhaps an unsoundness doubt?

Yeah, it was hilarious! Brenda, the interviewer, said something along the lines of “a lot of other countries are sending their Olympic teams to Aachen. Who are you sending?” and Mark Laskin grinned and said “our Olympic team”. This was shortly after the Spruce Meadows announcers had talked at some length about the team going to Aachen, and speculated that it may consist of the Olympic team… three of which were sort of supposed from the beginning (Eric Lamaze, Yann Candele, and Tiffany Foster) whereas the fourth was a bit more of a guessing game. Looks like Amy Millar will be filling her dad’s role this year, which will be interesting.

Maybe she won the appeal but because they’ve already selected she can’t be put on the team? Maybe its something to be dealt with for future riders?
So hard to say, it’s all hearsay so it’s hard to really have an opinion when I don’t know what is true.

Is the team named unofficially really the team?
I can’t believe we STILL have to wait until the 14th.

This is a handy FAQ document: http://www.crdsc-sdrcc.ca/eng/documents/SDRCCTeamSelectionTop5FAQ.pdf

It basically says that there is an expectation that the selectors will follow the selection criteria (which is a mystery to the public in this case) and not display bias. I have no idea what the grounds were in this particular case.

Well, officially we don’t know anything, but the “leaked” team strikes me as being quite probable.

The FEI deadline for naming the team is not yet upon us, so the arbitral decision that was allegedly released this week can impact the team selection. It isn’t just something for future riders.

Logic would suggest that she won the appeal based on some kind of lack of respect for selection criteria, possible including bias. Logic, however, seems to be virtually nonexistent here! I have no issue with JP being excluded from the team based on performance but I do if it’s based on bias, conflict of interest, or some other non-performance related criteria. I can’t imagine Clayton coaching her st the Games now, or the pressure on her to perform!! You really can’t make this shit up. I imagine they’ll now drop CL since she hasn’t run a 4 star, despite the fact that her horse appears to be peaking…

Thank you for this.

The problem could be the conflict of interest between being both a selector and coach? The lack of transparency makes this difficult to determine. Or a procedural error (which we have seen in the past).
But I would think that if you can appeal court cases, you could appeal this.
JP is the first time that there has been an appeal.
