Chasing Time (Race Hunter ‘19)

WMW would be very excited! I hope he does well, especially for @LaurieB.

I think this race will tell us if he’s capable of classic distances or if he’s better suited to a mile…at least at this stage of his racing career.
I think I’ve said this before, but I wouldn’t be heartbroken if he doesn’t make the Derby. That 20 horse cavalry charge out of the gate to the first turn…

While I would absolutely be thrilled to see one of “my horses” be good enough to get to the Derby, I also wouldn’t be heartbroken if he doesn’t make it…. Not that I want him to be a dud lol

I’m just trying to keep my expectations realistic. :upside_down_face:

I’m completely tickled that I bought a share in an unraced 2 y/o (thanks to y’all) who will now be starting in a G1 race.

A few years ago I bought some much larger shares in some 2 y/os and failed to have any of them beat a horse in a race. So Chasing Time has far exceeded the low bar they set.

I have to say that I think MyRacehorse has done a wonderful job of keeping us all informed and keeping the excitement high about this horse. Since he comes from my husband’s and my breeding program, I would have been following him anyway but I bought a share thinking maybe they’d post videos of his works and those would be nice to see. Of course there has been so much more than that!

Wherever this journey takes Chasing Time, it is so much fun to be on it with all of you. :two_hearts:

@LaurieB Forgive me because I’m pretty sure you have talked about this, but do you still have any mares or runners from the family? I know you were shifting focus a bit a couple years ago, which is why I ask.

I bought a share and have truly enjoyed following his career. My main hope is that he comes out of today’s race OK, although of course I would love for him to be in the money.

I think MyRacehorse has done a good job of keeping us “owners” up to date, not only on workouts and races (which we could get elsewhere, like on Equibase), but on the little things–videos of him galloping, schooling in the paddock, his groom feeding him an apple, etc.

I get more updates on Chasing Time in a day than I do on my boarded mare ready to drop a foal any second. That is not an exaggeration.

We kept 2 fillies out of Chasing Time’s 3rd dam, Tricky Bird–the first filly we bred out of her (Shriek) and the last one (All Aces). We raced them both and then they became broodmares for us.

Shriek produced Race Hunter (Chasing Times’s dam) and then MGSW MG1P Paid Up Subscriber and at that point she became worth too much for us to own. But we still have Shriek’s 1/2 sister All Aces. Her 3yo is Zing (Runhappy) who broke her maiden last year at 2, then took the winter off and is now back working again. Her 2yo is Puffin (Street Boss) who’s in training and her yearling is Pennywise (Goldencents) who will also hopefully race for us.

So I guess that’s a very long way of saying, yes, we do still have several family members.

This is Zing, just before she shipped to Keeneland.

Thanks! I wasn’t sure if you still had Shriek and All Aces anymore, so thank you for that update. I adore Pennywise, I so wanted a Goldencents of my own! I mean, your horses are all gorgeous, I just have that Goldencents crush.

@Texarkana I love Goldencents too. We have another filly by him this year (Scribble) who’s out of a different mare. She’s the one I posted pics of on the Sport Horse Breeding Forum.

This is Penny (pic from last year) with her dam All Aces.

When you say Shriek became “worth too much for us to own”, does that mean it made more sense to sell her to continue to support your operation? Or did her produce record push the mortality/loss of fertility insurance into the stratosphere? A combination of both?

I’m always interested in how breeders make decisions on who to keep and who to sell (beyond the obvious reasons, of course).

@Mara, your first thought was correct. For various reasons, Shriek was the mare I thought we would never sell and we turned down several offers but the one we finally accepted was too large to ignore. As for insurance, it’s very easy to get insurance on a racehorse but it’s exceedingly difficult to collect on a claim. After we’d had 12-15 horses insured for more than a dozen years, we had 2 small claims–the first we’d ever made–both turned down. After that, we cancelled our policies and now we self-insure.

I bought into Chasing Time because I recognized Shriek in his pedigree. I remember going “hey, I know that horse!” It’s been a fun ride, and win or lose, I’m so happy to call him mine.

Watching TVG, waiting for the Arkansas Derby to run.
WOW! Some really close, photo finishes in quite a few races.
Good racing all the way around today.

Best of luck to all the runners in the Arkansas Derby.

Florida Derby was exciting! Who couldn’t love Saffie Joseph Jr. after White Abarrio’s win??

Classic Causeway backed up suddenly and wasn’t asked after that. Wonder if he flipped a palate.

Well, all I can say is that the quick early pace didn’t do our guy any favors.
Maybe time for a short break?

I know there was talk on one of the (MRH) updates of targeting the Pat Day in the undercard on Derby day, if CT didn’t fire today.

Since it’s 5 weeks away, guess we’ll have to see how he comes out of this race first & foremost

Nice run by CyberKnife.

Yes, I hope he is ok too.
