Great first day of the BC.

Anyone know the distance of the so-called “Marathon?”
Pretty sure it’s no where near the the 2 miles of the old JCGC.
<smh> & weep.[/QUOTE]
1 3/4 miles, I think It’s a shame.
But there was some excellent racing today! Liam’s Map had a hell of a trip.
More details please for those of us for whom the CotH racing forum is the entire source of info!

Good day’s racing.
Hit it A Bomb with an incredible turn of foot to just get up in an exciting finish in the Juvy Turf
Catch a Glimpse steals the Juvy Fillies Turf off the front. The fav Alice Springs finds traffic problems and can’t mount a proper sustained run and finishes 2nd.
Liam’s Map breaks slow in the Dirt Mile, gets boxed in, can’t get out, fights the jock, looks like he was toast coming to the stretch, yet digs deep to find a way to chase down Lea in the stretch. A truly fantastic performance.
Stopshoppingmaria and Stellar Wind in a fantastic stretch duel in the Distaff. SSM drifts for most of the stretch run carrying SW out, inquiry called, but result allowed to stand.
Can’t wait for tomorrow.
The Marathon isn’t a Breeders’ Cup race anymore, right?
I think they should drop the Dirt Mile. It’s just a race for the Classic also-rans.

With all due respect, without the “also ran and aging horses” there would be no BC or for that matter horse racing.
STOPCHARGINMARIA had a history of also ran. Now she has hit her stride.

The Marathon is no longer a BC race. It is a shame that there is just not a demand for the longer races. The lack of class among the entrants in yesterday’s race was surprising – several low level claimers in a $200K stakes race. That’s not bad in and of itself but you can see why it’s not a BC race.
Smooth Roller has been scratched from the Classic. Damn, I was banking on him. I had the feeling he was about to unleash a monster race.
It keeps getting easier and easier for American Pharoah.
I wonder, now that Smooth Roller is out, if Gleneagles will take the lead or if it’ll be another AP/Frosted header.
It’ll be interesting to see what AP can do, now that he’s well rested.
Hope they all come in safe & sound.
Loving Jerry Bailey’s tribute to Cigar, who won the Classic 20 years ago now! I wa little when he ran, but I remember the hoopla around him. He was really a great horse. Jerry’s story about riding him at the Horse Park particularly stands out
It is too bad Smooth Roller dropped out I didn’t know a lot about him, but his stats and previous performances made me wonder if he was sitting on a bigger performance than people were giving him credit for. A bit like Keen Ice in the Travers, who I honestly thought should’ve gone off at a shorter price considering how dramatically he seemed to be improving.

It’s not Gleneagles running style to press the pace, he’s a hold up horse. Having never run on dirt and never gone 10f before, this is probably not the race to be sending him to the front for the first time.
It’s doubtful that Frosted will take the fight to AP like he did in the Travers, as trainer Kiaran McLaughlin was vocal about his dissatisfaction with the ride Lezcano gave Frosted in the Travers and publiclly said he felt it cost him a better placing.
Pretty much every horse left in the race is a stalker or closer, so it’s hard to see where AmP will be pressured on the lead. If he gets his own way up front, it’s hard to see him being beaten. I guess someone will have to bite the bullet and throw caution to the wind and sacrifice their horse. But who?

A lot of detailed coverage can be found on TDN. An excellent free daily source of racing coverage and the business of. Domestic and worldwide.
Beautiful performance in the Juvenile Fillies by Songbird! Rachel’s Valentina was a game second, but Songbird just dominated the whole field. The Medaglia D’Oro daughter looked more like Rachel Alexandra than Valentina did coming down that stretch!

Songbird is scary good.
Maybe they’ll take a tilt at the Derby/TC with her.
Is nobody watching?
Man that was pretty damn cool… the winner’s circle after the Turf Sprint.
Yes, very cool, and MS looked like he had some left in the tank.
La Verdad impressed me as well. She just won a race 7 days ago and very nearly hung on when Wavell Avenue came flying at the end.
Nice win by Wavell Avenue! That inquiry was a bit puzzling though.
I hope the finish holds, because Stephanie’s Kitten was fantastic in the last furlong of the Filly & Mare Turf.
Kudos to Staphanie’s Kitten but, man, Legatissimo had a bad trip after her stumble at the start. There was a lot of traffic and checking in that race.
