Devin Ryan @ Hamptons
Let’s wait and see. How much notice was given by show management for them to vacate the premises ? At that moment, it may have been difficult for owners to arrange for a hauler and find another barn -with available stalls-ready to receive their horses.

At some point we’ll know who stayed and who left.
And some will undoubtedly stay despite evidence of these practices. Especially if they are winning.

True, some may stay. But at what cost ? Their reputation and intergrity would be at stake, and suddenly winning isn’t as fun.

I’ve told this pathetic story before, but here goes again. When I was a hunter circuit groom, the coach was drug-wise very ethical. No soring, no poling, no tack nosebands. Probably why she got her students to the Regional Finals, where they would be competetive, and get some to the Medal/Maclay/USET finals, and expect at least half of them to put in a good trip. But you weren’t going to win at Indoors with her.

There was a junior rider who talked about how much she would love to ride with Paul Valliere. This was within months of the insurance murders being covered in detail in Sports Illustrated. I said to the 16 year old, sweet, innocent, naive (puke, barf, spit) child, “But, dear, are you aware of what he has done? These aren’t rumors - he has admitted it.”

Her answer - “Yup.”

And my days of being a horse show groom became numbered with that response…

McLain was convicted of putting pins in his horses boots several years back. I know some think mighty high of him but I lost all respect at that point in time. abuse is abuse. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree there

First off, not pins, and secondly as someone else stated it was fishy circumstances and I was there. So I know more then most here. Mclain’s horses are very well looked after and loved. He is his own person.

Seconded.

Agreed - but it doesn’t take weeks to pull a horse. My best friend had a major issue at Thermal this past year with her former trainer and she immediately contacted another trainer at the show to temporarily move the horse into another barn’s care. The show office was cooperative and didn’t even charge her for two stalls. Devin’s clients could still send their horses to HITS just with another trainer. Given the situation, I would hope HITS would cooperate and let them move their stalls to a different barn.

I haven’t read the whole thread.

Did Devin Ryan ever release a statement himself? I see the last post on his business facebook page has some deleted comments…and nothing new posted after 8/30.

Just curious.

He’s being PR smart, shutting his mouth, and letting the other high-profile drama stay center stage.

And I noticed the deleted comments, too.

I know, right? They’re treating Saugerties all trashy like it’s Culpeper or something.

Sorry, could not help it. I’ll show myself out.
:confused: Not sure what you mean.

His first appearance in front of the USEF Hearing Committee is tomorrow, Friday 9/4.

Thankful that he has an immediate temporary suspension!! I swear maybe USEF has some hope!

So how many of you will now refuse to show at Saugerties because TS is allowing this POS to show (most likely) the same abused animals that got him kicked out of the HC last week?

If no one puts their money where their mouth is, nothing changes. As we have seen over and over and over.

Actually I think a temporary suspension means he isn’t showing there anymore. I’ll check the class lists for today.

He still shows up in the level 6 class list today but I imagine that he was entered before the suspension and I doubt he will be allowed to show.

Not sure how this became a situation to blame TS. I am glad USEF moved quickly to get the temp suspension.

What I mean is Culpeper is a dump and an after thought compared to the other show up north.

And I’ll be surprised if there’s some long rambling rant all over Facebook or suits filed with transcripts as exhibits. Suspended, stay hushed while sitting it out, and business as normal on the other side.

I actually like HITS Culpeper. It was actually a forethought not an after thought but I think they did a nice job with their updates. To each their own I suppose.

Anyone know how the hearing went today???
In short, yes, it is procedure to bar him from continuing at the competition per GR839.

GR839 Cruelty to and Abuse of a Horse
4. The following acts are included under the words Cruelty and Abuse but are not limited thereto:

d. Manual poling with any object other than a bamboo pole.
Apologies for this question - I am a dressage person, but a friend mentioned this episode, so I took at look at the thread.

Can someone advise why poling with a bamboo pole is allowed? Seems the policy should be NO poling at all, with any device.

Bamboo is “softer” and makes noise surprising the horse, getting the job done without doing harm like the metal poles, tack strips, hot wire and other “training techniques”. Suppose I should include capsaicin under the boot to that list.
