Do we need a No Zimecterin Gold sticky
Actually, the amount of ivermectin per pound of Equimax is just about the same as that of ZG. It’s the prazi that, on a pound basis, that is about 50% higher. Simkie did the great calculations on the onchocerca thread:
Great catch! I never did the math. :o

Regarding this Merial conspiracy, since neither Gastrogard nor Ulcergard are effective for the treatment of ulcers not found in the stomach one has to wonder why anyone would expect ulcers in the lower GI tract to heal with either?

There is no conspiracy as far as I know excpet to keep the burns private, but if your horse had burns to his intestine what would you use? GG would be what I would becuase there is no other product to treat uclers that the company made. They are not tested for treating other ulcers, but that does not mean they do not help. Remember, they did not pay for treatments, they paied using products.

The coloring might work fine on other solutions, but perhaps it does not react well with the active ingredients in ZG. Chemicals are not always safe in any combination. Soduim and chlodie work fime together, but not so much fun apart. What else differs between Equimax and ZG? Or ZG and GG carrying agent?

I smoke coggerettes. I have smoked for over 30 years. I do not have lung cancer or heart disease. Does that prove ciggerettes are safe? I do not know anyone who smokes or has those problems, so ciggerettes are safe and those that have problems are just “senistive” or having a “reaction”?

I’ve heard of horses getting reactions to other wormers. Some have terrible reactions to vaccinations. You can’t pull everything off the market.

I’ve used zimectrin gold and have never seen a reaction in any of the horses.
Exactly. My horse died last year from a bad reaction to the WNV vaccine - but I still vaccinated this year with it - better safe than sorry.

No problems with zimectrin gold here - just used it on 22 horses 2 weeks ago = PERFECTLY

But why tempt fate when Equimax is on the market and as far as I know doesn’t have large reports of horrible side effects? Zimectrin Gold burned one horse I own and made my older guy neurological for a day. Scary!

There’s a newer WNV that causes fewer reactions (if any) than the older ones. I do not use Fort Dodge anything. I had a horse with a massive reaction to a FD strangles vaccine back in '95 - talk about a very sick horse! There are safer alternatives. Why tempt fate just because you get lucky once in a while? I couldn’t in good conscience give my horse something I’ve witnessed bad reactions with and just cross my fingers and hope this time I’ll be one of the lucky ones.

I used Equimax this go round because I remembered this thread. So no problems with my horses, but my BM who just used Zimectrin Gold has had a reaction in one horse. I did a google search and up popped this thread. I will point my BM to it.

I won’t chance it anymore, “just in case” but…

We had 10 horses on our farm and used ZG on ALL of them and had no reaction at all. That was before we knew it “could” cause problems.

So why some people’s horses get ulcers and some don’t, I don’t know???

BUT - this is extremely interesting because the vets told me that Sweets’ getting stomach ulcers MIGHT have been a bad reaction to a wormer, and she HAS been wormed with ZG several times in the last 5 years. The last dose was a few months before the ulcer diagnosis. And I do remember seeing a small sore on her lip that I thought was from a bit I was using! WTF??? So…hmmmmmm…now I wonder???

Geeze, I am really mad. I never knew about this!

I used it on a rotational basis, but after talking to equinelaw, I quit it. Too risky.
And I had never used Quest, as others had bad experiences with it.

So I am sticking to what hasn’t been reported as hurting horses.

Happened to me Today

Guess I am giving this post a bump. Have two horses on Strongid Daily. Had not seen this thread. Gave ZM Gold. One horse, who has had this product in the past with no reaction, had a huge lip, salivating, etc. Vet was at the farm for other reasons. Looked like a chemical burn to me, the barn manager and the vet tech. Vet said she “could not imagine” wormer would do this. Bee sting??? Ran cold water in his mouth. Apparently this was not the answer. Went to the internet to discover this thread. Thank you all. My vet will be calling Merial because they wouldn’t talk to me - even though all I wanted to know was what to DO. For those who doubt - used it before on THIS horse - with no reaction. No reaction on the other horse, or the others I have owned who have received it in the past. I took pictures, horse’s lip looks like his tongue is hanging out of his mouth. Started not 10 minutes after he was wormed. Can’t believe the pain I put him through. Was calling him a dumb @$$ for eating a bee.

ZM Gold is the official deworming product of the USEF. Perhaps they need to reconsider.

Thanks for bumping this thread up. I had no idea about ZG. Thank goodness I used the Equimax this time because they were out of ZG.

I have also used ZG in the past with no noted adverse events but did discontinue due to the multiple reported issues here on COTH, and then noted the subsequent addition of the very watered down warning on the label insert.

FDA website has this advisory letter from 2007 that also gives me less confidence in the company and the product:
http://www.fda.gov/cvm/Documents/Zimecterin_10032007.pdf

They bundled a pack of 6 to sell as a year’s worth of “gold standard” deworming protection. They left out the mandated warnings (including and specifically the post-approval experience warning about the burns). They also made a false claim that it was 100% effective against all stages of strongyles.

Does that sound like a company trying to dump product to you? That’s exactly how it reads to me.

Boo & Hiss, and I hope y’all that got burned horses file a class action suit. Don’t even get me started on their price gouging for GG/UG.

We never had a problem with Z. Gold and this year I did Quest for the first time and was very worried - he was 100% fine. So it just depends on the horse, like most things.

My horse had a bad reaction to Banamine and Oxytet. So another example - most horses are fine with those - mine wasn’t.

That may be true, but keep in mind, I have used this product on THIS HORSE in the past without a problem. Why this dose this time caused a reaction I don’t know. So please don’t believe you are safe just because you have never had a problem. I never had a problem until today and I have used it every spring since it came out. I have had this horse for 10 years.

We just did 40 horses with ZG and not a single problem. Lucky I guess?

Thank you for posting this information!

My barn owner does the deworming at my barn. At my old barn, I had my own protocol that included Equimax in the spring and Zimectrin Gold in the winter with Strongid/Safeguard alternately every 6 weeks in between. Worked great for me. I’ve never heard of any adverse reactions to Zimectrin Gold. I actually liked this protocol a lot. I think the combo of Praziquantel and Ivermectin is great.

The only dewormer I heard severe warnings about was Quest. Moxidectin (the main drug in Quest) would cause severe reactions or even death in older/sick horses (this was info received from my equine vet). I esp. told people to avoid it after it was pulled off the market for dogs (in the form of ProHeart 6 - the 6 month Heartworm Prevention injection). They saw severe reactions and death in older/sick dogs and that’s why ProHeart 6 was pulled off the market. I worked at an small pet (dog/cat) animal hospital, so I had access to all this information back then. We were fortunate at my hospital to never have had any dogs show an adverse reaction to the drug.

I had a horrendous scare with my old mare last year after using Eqvalan Gold; same product and manufacturer as Zimectrin Gold. It was recommended that I use Eqvalan Gold because of her age by a pharmacist. Her mouth was badly burned; tongue and lips swollen and hanging. I was just freaked that I had given her something that would do that to her and I called Merial and sent them photographs; pictures of the box with the lot # on it, etc. I kept thinking if her mouth was like that, what were her insides going through?? Never really got anything help from them either. Boy, I was pissed.

I have no client so I cannot sue. I am willing to sue on someone else’s behalf for free just to get it fixed, but people are so distrusting of lawyers they do not beleive me when I say I’ll sue for you. Nobody will win any money, but I can force them to fix the problem or give better warnings.
I hope someone took you up on this offer. I would if I had used the product but have not yet & probably won’t after reading this thread so far unless something has changed.

I have always used Equimax and never had a problem with it and I am glad someone pointed me in the right direction…
Equinelaw- I hope someone really does take up on the offer would love to be a fly on the wall for that…Sorry your horse had to go through that…

I used this product for years without a problem. Even on my most sensitive sally of a horse. I cut it out of my routine because I can use other things. I figure it’s best to play it safe.

Does anyone know anything about this reaction? What ingredient causes it? What triggers it?

I too used the product for years on my TB and my WB, but after talking to Equinelaw, I quit using it. Maybe mine didn’t have the sensitivity to it or maybe I was lucky, but it’s not worth the risk.
Just like ace on male horses, I guess I was lucky to never have had the reaction in my WB when I boarded at a barn that used ace like they had a gallon bottle in the frig.
PM equinelaw for the story on her horse and this.
