Common in central and southern cali- pipe corrals, limited to no shelter, open ‘mare motels’, pasture is limited because watering is expensive and land is a premium. The further away from cities obviously the larger the ‘pastures’ but almost none are irrigated.
A nice pipe corral is at minimum 24x48. The average I would say is 24x24. Many are kept in 12x12 in the backyards. A ‘large’ residential lot would be 1 acre. I had just over 1 acre and 6-8 horses depending on the rescue situation. Many communities have 1/2 acre lots- deduct house, yard, and toy space and you don’t have much more than a couple stall space to jam in a few horses. Some people can manage this successfully but it won’t work if you are lazy.
Daily exercise is a must when dealing with such small horse keeping space. I used my riding arena as turn-out which I rotated day/night shifts. I also either lunged, walked, or rode horses on a near daily basis. We had bridle paths around the first house I lived in. Just like you would walk your dogs around, we would walk the horses
Now keep in mind that the weather and temps vary greatly. Coast to desert to mountains, you are looking at way different conditions. I certainly wouldn’t live in Big Bear or Sierras without a barn/fully enclosed cover. Likewise I would prefer shade cover in the high desert from sun where temps reach triple digits. I had an open mare motel at the first place which I installed a misting system. When it was 100+, the misters were on and the horses stayed mostly under shade cover where it would be 10-15 degrees cooler. Heat stress causing colic/laminitis was a BIG concern by most vets, coming in second only to sand colic!
Thanks Daventry, definitely not a good idea, although I was just brainstorming.
:no::no::no::no::no::no: Bad idea!
Why not just keep posting alerts to these threads on her FB pages?
I made my own decision based upon many factors when I chose to breed to Redwine. Not just what people said, but what they did as well. It was clear he was the flavor of the month for quite a while on this forum but much of that was pretty pony lover’s gushing over the bling as opposed to real breeder’s constructively evaluating his pluses and minuses. What sealed the deal was two people who I did and very much still do admire and respect both them and their breeding programs choosing to use him for their own mares. It was only later that I found out the breedings were to settle a debt so they could cut ties more or less. Still, my only regret is every time my filly does well it gives her free advertising. She even has her grand champion pic on her website. I guess she got that off my facebook page.
“The climate is what is allowing the lack of sheds. I just looked it up, and it is a high of barely low 80s for the worst of the summer. Dropping as a low to around 40 for the coldest nights. That is just an ideal climate. Does she have a barn and stalls for newborns? No horse is going to suffer at 80, or 40 degrees. It is delightful.” [/QUOTE]
Okay, I’ve lived in Monterey, CA; and you need to understand that those temps are averages. Additionally, those temp measurements you listed are measured IN THE SHADE – that same shade that her horses DON’T HAVE. And, there can also be wind and rain. Aside from all of that, I don’t care WHERE you live; it is ridiculous to have horses – much less breed them – without available shelter of some kind. What if there is an injury that you need to treat? I don’t breed horses or know anything about it; but I would be shocked if the reputable breeders here would defend having foaling going on without shelter. And who keeps horses without shade of some kind? And, with all of the fires going on, I wonder what her plan is for evacuating those horses.
And, to solve your “I don’t know who to believe” dilemma; all you need to do is some googling and some reading - but here’s a start - http://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/showthread.php?t=353781
And the people that you respect that are defending Jill Burnell probably started out by not wanting to bad mouth her because she owed them money or owed them a breeding or had possession of their mares or through some misguided idea that supporting the lie protected the value of their own horses – or, or, or. Mostly, people hate to admit they’ve been scammed. Personally, if someone, after reviewing all of the data on Jill Burnell tried to defend her to me; I’d immediately scratch them off my trusted / respected list and then question anything they had ever told me.
What a freaking catastrophe!
If the picture was taken by you or someone you know, ask to have the photo removed immediately. If the photo was taken by a professional photographer and you paid for the photo, alert the photographer that she’s using the photo on her website without having paid for it.
If you get no response…let me know, as I can easily find out who her web hosting service provider is and it’s easy to email them and complain that a unauthorized photo is being used without your permission. Most web hosting companies are very good about removing the material immediately!
I really don’t want to deal with her, as far as I am concerned, she doesn’t exist. I certainly don’t want to get into a war of words over a picture. I am sure she would threaten to sue me for something! I paid for the photo from the photographer then scanned it onto my computer and put it on my FB page. Heck for all I know I might not even have permission to use it that way but at least it is mine. I guess it is possible she bought the print and did the same thing but I doubt it.
Eagle74 you really make me laugh. You isolate the post here by her sister in law - stating it’s just one person’s opinion. Hello - the comments, concerns, etc. about this stallion owner/breeder are so numerous it would take days to recount them.
Are you trying to infer that horse people all over the U.S. who probably don’t even know each other have communicated and arranged to have some mass sign on to single out what you seem to feel is a “legitimate business owner”?
How much more do people have to see and hear to have grave concerns about the animals that this woman has in her possession?? Hoarders to me are just plain lazy pigs. Are there some who may have some mental issue - perhaps - but definintely not ALL of them. Do I care if her house is a pig sty (no insult to pigs intended)? No I don’t. What I care about is that she is shipping semen from several stallions from what can only be described as tarsh heap. AND as others have pointed out - one of these stallions is EVA positive.
I don’t buy the “it’s California we have no grass - just dirt and pipe fences” defense. Those aren’t the images she posts on her website and it’s highly probable they aren’t even taken on her farm. So it’s not surprising that some people are buying into the images and the stallion’s pedigrees without knowing all the details.
And shame on those people who want to push all the negatives aside just because they may have a quality offspring from one of her stallions. Enabling her to continue this unacceptable situation is, IMHO, absolutely wrong.
 Is all I can say.
My house is unfortunately far from being tidy, but feces on the floor? Good gosh. That’s WHOLE other ball game!
Hoarding really is a mental illness, a form of OCD. It’s not laziness.
It’s like other illnesses, such as anorexia, where the person can’t see how thin they are. The hoarder cannot see that it’s filthy and overcrowded, it seems ok to them and they are firmly attached to all that junk and garbage. If you read about it, there are changes in the brain that make normal function impossible once it gets to this level.
SHIPPING SEMEN INTERSTATE - USDA
The USDA would probably be interested in semen being shipped interstate from that nasty environment along with the whole EVA thing –

Gerd and Sarah Reuter owned Romantic Star.
Chad Keenum rode him for Jill Burnell, and Mr. Keenum stated to me, when I mentioned that Jill Burnell owed money to me, that I shouldn’t worry, that Ms. Burnell usually will eventually pay her bills. That’s a statement shown to be untrue to the many owed money by her.
Redwine does have DNA on file and the Redwine filly I own has been DNA verified by GOV Oldenburg. GOV will not do business any more with Ms. Burnell as she owes them money, and owes AHS money, owes J. French money, owes me money, owes Silver Creek Sporthorses money, and owes money or services to many others.
Eagle 74 (greenie) sounds like as much an alternate name for Jill Burnell as Roy Parker was an alternate name, and I think it’s lovely that she is reading this thread. The photos “Eagle 74” has posted show newly cleaned paddocks and newly dropped forage - big deal.
This woman is a blight in the breeding business and I won’t do business with her again or ever recommend that others become involved in any kind of business dealing with her. My heart really hurts for her horses, those good mares carefully bred and cherished by others who have ended up at her place, and the foals born to those mares, as well as for the many clients that have been sucked in and duped by Gray Fox Farm.
Diane Halpin: Facebook
The funny part about the no grass in Calif. is that her neighbor right across the street has a grassy pasture that JB leases for some mares. He only allows 3 mares at a time. The pics you see of babies running through the grass are taken across the street. So yes, grass does exist here! It only disapears when you overcrowd an area. She has 2.5 acres with over 30 horses on it. Some may be gone by now. And I dont care how “perfect” Cal weather is, you must have a shelter for them to get out of the elements. When it rains here, it really can rain! And yes it does get into the 90’s and even 100 degree’s. And yet these horses suffer through it. Very poor horse keeping.
WOW
The plot just keeps getting deeper. I’ve always liked her horses, and it’s certainly not their fault. I wonder how many she still owns, where they are, and what kind of condition they are in. “Flavor of the month” or not, Redwine throws nice offspring from a variety of different mares. I’ve always liked Romantic Star as well. And she also seems to have some very nice mares, and I hope they all land softly.
What it will take is a judge banning her from owning animals, or limiting the number she is allowed to have. Well, and for people to STOP sending their mares there. That won’t stop breeding the ones already owned, however.
Guess I’ll scratch Redwine off my 2013 shortlist
PAYPAL will shut an account down in a heartbeat if there are fraud complaints
The people who have been defrauded by Jill Burnell need to complain to PayPal, their credit card companies, and the 3 credit reporting agencies. This is not directly related to the hoarding, but there are lots of fraud / bad business deal stories.
WHOA! Haven’t read past the first post yet. But wholly molley! Seriously, I always posted on Jill Burnell threads because I thought she was a con artist and needed to be exposed. I thought the number of horses she had on one property was not okay. I thought the way she burned and scammed people was not okay.
I had no idea is was THIS BAD. Hopefully exposure will bring this charade to an end! – off to read 9 pages.
well flame suite on. and no I am not Jill Burnell and yes it is rather annoying when anyone who has a positive factual post is called an alter or Jill herself. Some of you out there know me but any of you don’t feel free to pm me.
I need to state I AM NOT condoning or joining a bandwagon or anything like that, I am stating facts.
I like a previous poster have been to Jills many times this year using breedings that I had. On one occasion I brought a truck load of people with me (that she didn’t know about) and she was fine with that, spent a great deal of time showing everyone around. So that makes me and 2 other professional horse people walking all around her farm and seeing all the mares/foals/stallions. There is not ONE that wasn’t in premium shape. I think the woman in MO who purchased all the mares and babies would say the same thing. They made a HUGE trek to MO and the pictures don’t show horses that were not well cared for.
I don’t know where SIL found a skinny horse, unless it was one that she purchased recently. (ok this is observance not fact) and could be one that she bought from a breeder because it was by one of GFF stallions. I have seen the babies she has bought from some breeders and they looked horrible. And there is still one on FB where people are giving it a thumbs up,
My last visit all babies had fly sheets on. Everyone in NCal knows that there really is not grass in our pastures (for which I got jumped on the first time I decided to delve into the horsekeeping debate). And yes we get mud. Because we have no grass. So unless your mare/baby/stallion is in a stall they will stand in it, and if you have a paddock they will stand in it by choice. if you don’t let them out in the mud people will slam you for keeping them in a stall. So for people like Primetime, just continue to avoid CA cause there are not many grass pastures to be found.
I was happy to see 2 newborn foals one day and Jill spent most the day with one of them that was colicky (that is not abuse) I watched a group of foals in the pasture playing together. Tell them that they are living in horrid conditions.
I was not overcome by the smell of urine in stalls as was suggested and Jill knew every quirk about each horse.
I have had excellent customer service and that is a fact (that a lot of you don’t want to hear). 3 mares who kept throwing me off on timing which mean’t getting semen same day sometimes within 4 hrs. sometimes a stallion collected while my husband was there.
Very recently someone told me “there are not 2 sides to every story, there are 3” I was annoyed at first because I felt that mean’t she didn’t believe me, but thought on it and understand why she said it. I am posting this to apply some facts in the midst of bashing,(again not to condone or be part of a bandwagon). Some have valid issues and some don’t but are being egged on. And in the hype start dragging others into the conversation. I am posting FACTS from my very recent visits.
ok so flame:( or not, preferrably not
Stick to the facts
Fact:
1.The stallions are lovely as are their offspring (kudos to anyone with a foal by either IMO)
The horses in the photos look healthy and fine (if not in hunter shiny condition with braids )
The sister in law only provided proof of a very nasty house and lab
The animals dont look starved or abused (other than dead chickens?)
She has warrants
So really her crime would be:A dirty disgusting lab and that alone wouldnt make me want to use her, and fraudulent activity.
As far as her mental state, well we can say what we want but thus far she is a criminal (we didnt decide that the courts did).
Its not our fault that she runs a business out of her home and someone is showing us pictures of her REALLY GROSS lab area (house).
