"DOUBLE JEOPARDY!" - Old Horse Show Trivia

My question still is - was the picture taken at the Old Smith town Hunt Horse show grounds out on the island? I remember the beach there across from the show grounds being very rocky and difficult to get a horse across. My old fuzzy brain can’t remember if it was out in the Hamptons or not or what the grounds were called. I just remember the beach, the outside course, and that A shows were held there.

Oh dear, I am REALLY guessing here, but is the first one Kim’s Song, the wonderful horse owned by Bruce Duchossios?

No clue about the second…

Nope…and wasn’t Kim’s Song a chestnut?

Major clue: first horse owned by same person who was also winning with Perfect Stranger.

what about Lisa Castellucci as an equitation rider?

I recall the crowds at “Harrisburg” stomping (!)after a Lisa C. round. What was the name of her super duper equitation mount? (I am thinking Foreign Exchange, but maybe he was a GP horse…)

Anybody?

I remember when he won Southampton - out of the blue. What a wonderful little guy.

Broadway Joe

Springledge Irish Twig! That’s the one! She lived down the road somewhere from FCHC, not at the club. My friend Laurie leased her, and I was so jealous! She was a wonderful “pony”, until she wasn’t a pony. That’s when Laurie got her to lease. It’s a shame the childrens hunter division was just beginning then, because once she was protested out of ponies, there was no real place for her. She had plenty of step to do the horse distances, and she was a great jumper. Just a tiny bit too big. I dug out some childhood photos of her last night… Hadn’t thought about her in 25 years…

I’ll be interested to see Monday’s guess who LP. I can only think of one horse that moved from Emmett’s barn to mine, that we both were responsible for. Of course, there are probably more…

Romparound— correct!
Still no takers on Play The Music??

Mclain St. the horse may have been from the 60’s, but Mclain the horse was from the eighties. He went from Barnie’s barn to Leslie’s, and was her world cup winning horse. What year Yellowdog?
And yes, Mrs. Schulthees was happy to lease Spiff n’ Polish at the start, and she quickly became too expensive to buy. She eventually did end up with Lisa Burke.

astounds me! All hail, the Queen of Trivia!

Cruise ship? Hell, she should have her own queenly YACHT! Can I be a deck hand?

One persons trivia is another persons daily life! You better know something about the horses and people you saw everyday.
It is funny though, I had dinner a few nights ago with IG’s ex shoeing partner. We were talking about IG’s parents.

He was originally shown in the Pacific NW at the same time I was competing up there. He was shown in the Preliminary jumper division under the name Bill Pinch, and ridden by Gary Henley.

However, I can’t answer the rest of your questions about him, bumpkin…

Laurieb, that picture of Terry Rudd is just classic, what with the ponytail/pigtails and those great flared breeches!!

The answer is Brother Sam! Joey had him early in his career and Sammy became a favorite of his. He came to Aachen in '78 to watch Ian compete on Sammy. I have a picture of Joey with Sam and if I EVER get a scanner, I’ll post it!

Upperco,

We must know each other in our former lives. I learned to ride at Hilltop in the 1950’s. Sandy was mother’s “4th daugher” and she came on all our family vacations with us. Clarence was not, how you say, focused on the needs of a young teenage girl, so mother took over that role since Sandy was best friends with my two older sisters.

PS Her very fancy pony was named Mischief and was actually a small TB. She was one of the first very type-y “ponies” and she and Carol McNamara’s gray pony Jellybean traded off top ribbons for several years.

Susie Schoellkopf

P.S. Barn call story, please

Don’t think so, MAD. Am pretty sure Doc bought him directly from Pam Hamlin (thank you whoever remembered that name!).

Alan rode with Carl Knee (along with Michelle).

What rider has won the most showjumpin’ Grands Prix?

(HRHwc may NOT PLAY!)

Good one Shorty Okay next question please Alex…

Correct - and wouldn’t another be Mr. It?

MargaretF should come forth w/the answer to #2.

Laurie B you are amazing, and, may I say, you have FAR too much time on your hands to think of all those ponies and owners – I had come up with 3 smalls and 3 larges [NB to you youngie’s – there were no mediums back then] just so I could answer my own question.

– And Rexford – How old are you? – I thought you were just a tadpole way back when. How do you know this stuff???

On the MVR stuff – I had heard that his name was really Marvin Rappaport, but he added the Van to make it less Jewish sounding (yes, folks, back in the “early days” horses were a very WASPish thing and non-WASP’s were looked down upon…) – As to Spindletop Count Fleet – I think you mean Spindletop Fleet Sailor (Count Fleet was a Triple Crown winner, which is why you thought of the name). I rode with VHV in the '60’s with Nancy Candib and was there the day Fleet Sailor arrived at Cedar Lodge – I will always remember him as one of the most beautiful horses I have ever seen in my life. He took my breath away. My jr. horse was a good guy, but he was… just a horse… I remember being SO JEALOUS of Fleet Sailor that I tried to find just one thing that Willy (my boy) had that was better that FS – I finally decided that FS’s forelock was very wispy and that Willie had a nicer forelock LOL)

But how do you know all this about Nany Candib? She was never a big name in the riding world- I think she quit after her jr years and never won a finals or anything… In all honesty, I remember the horse more than I remember her (except that she plucked her eyebrows to a fine line when that was just starting to be the “in thing”…)

LH4 OK you smarties about the '60’s… Name another Spindletop horse that VHV purchased for a client – give names before and after purchase and name of client.
