"DOUBLE JEOPARDY!" - Old Horse Show Trivia

Now, here’s one from me! (after 2 cupsa cawfee)

Mark Laskin rode a borrowed horse in the American Invitational (early 80’s).
(the thread on M.L. reminded me I’ve wanted to ask this question…)

Name the horse (please).

clue- usual rider was Norman D.J.

the horse that I was thinking of, but I guess I was under the incorrect notion that Martha and Emily Wachtel showed her when they were at Hunterdon/Beacon Hill. Oooops!

Here’s another one and I am certain of this one. A small junior, chestnut gelding, who was almost equally as mean and in his later days sported a nasty looking back ankle from his run in with a vaccuum cleaner.

You and I come from the same era!

Marvin’s horses included Spindletop Showdown, Spindletop Please Note and Spindletop Midtown. His nightclub, Spindletop, in NYC financed the horses.

Fancy ponies in the sixties:
Smalls: Midget, Chantilly, Driftwood, Cockscrow Flair, Crepe Suzette, Wizard of Oz, Highfields Town and Country

Larges: Pride 'n Joy, Prim ‘n Proper, Neat n’ Tidy, Rebel, Flying Mouse, Hot Shot Kid, Keswick, Thorwell

I could go on and on.

I’ve been here almost daily, but those jr. and hunter questions are not my forte!

I am racking my brain on the Windrush question. I only know of Melanie there at the beginning, and I am picturing a black warmblood in prelims…

Val was never a Windrush purchase, and Lyps came later under cloak and dagger circumstances…

Who owned Windrush? And what WR groom got to go WHERE after '84 Olympics with what best friend at the WR owner’s expense? (Read free trip). Laurie, you are ineligible to answer. OOOPs, that’s me!

Laurie

The Watchels did eventually end up with Silk and Satin, but I don’t think both girls showed her. That was at the very end of her career. When I took care of her she was owned by Tricia Andrews, and then sold to Dina Santangelo.
I remember Count Tuscan having a severe injury involving a vacuum cleaner at the Fairfield June show. This goes way back!

Foal Run Farm- Mr & Mrs. Harry Gill
Hobby Horse Farm- Leonard King
Liseter Farm- Mrs. J. Austin Dupont
Nimrod- Ronnie Mutch

Stumped me on Foxwood…

Gotta be a B.French horse.

I may need some assistance on the details but…

How about Ronnie Silcox hiding in the beautifully bedded straw stall, that would be under the banks waiting for Veile to walk into the stall. Ronnie would leap from beneath the wheat and Veile would react with characteristic fright. You’d think Veile would have gotten wise because we were all skulking around waiting for his reaction.

And one time he got left in a stall, and I don’t mean a horse’s.

And then there was Bert and his primadonna’s. Just why do these girls have to have a hotel room?

And then there was the night of the Irish vermouth. Never before and certainly not since.

So who were the participants that night in Dublin? Hint: Anne Reynolds groom of Rasputin was one.

Hey Yeller, what’s with the abbreviation?

MaryAnn may have ridden Ruxton, but that is not who I was thinking of.

This would have been one of the very first pros to have him. I believe the ones that “found” him as well.

I may not always win, but I will always try to win.

I know Katie did him in both the junior hunters AND jumpers, though possibly not at the same show!

I think Louie did him some as well- open speeds, maybe?

Funny how times have changed, isn’t it? Now kids use three equitation horses- a practice horse, a show horse, and a finals specialist. Not many horses wear different hats these days!

Speaking of finals, what was the name and color of the horse Leslie won the Maclay on?
Bonus points: What was “different” about her attire?
Triple bonus points: Who remembers the relationship between those answers and the first pro’s night equitation classic at WEF about 10 years ago?

Wasn’t Spiff n Polish found when Leslie spotted her in the Quarter Horse division at Farmington? If my memory is correct the woman that owned her first Leased her to Leslie instead of selling her. Smart woman.

As I recall, Mrs. Schultess was also happy to lease at the beginning. Once the mare became famous thanks to Leslie and Lynne, they could not have afforded to buy her.

Debbie Willson rode her IN MY CAP to win the finals, trained by Rodney Jenkins.
In My Cap was a jumper later shown by Joan Boyce, in gran prix & puissance classes.

I ought to know this.

The great pony was Hot Shot Kid.

And I know, for a while, all her mounts had “Kid” in their names. Is that it? (Of course that doesn’t explain her Junior Hunter, Brenton Reef )

Em, I think I remember you asking about Brassy a long while back. All the Brass was owned by my good friend Cheryl Reed (now Fisher) when she was a junior at Fairfield. Leslie showed him some in the first years also. I don’t remember where they got him from, although I wonder if it was possibly from Otis Brown, given his name. I don’t think he was sired by the well known sire who’s offspring all have Brass in their names. This Brassy was a quarter horse. Cheryl showed him with pretty good success for a few years. He qualified for indoors, including New York for I think two years, and got ribbons there. Cheryl had another small junior at the time, Send No Flowers. The next time I speak with Cheryl I will get more background, and post it for you. Do you have him now? He must be quite old. He was a cute little horse and I hope he is well.

Brassy was retired at my barn!! Somehow he ended down here (hehe, probably b/c of Brownie, who is friends with my trainer–I dunno though actually)…he is owned by a mid-50 year old lady who walk-trots him and gives him SO many treats. He is probably still as well-groomed as he was then (she grooms him for 30+ minutes every single day!). He lost an eye due to some kind of freak accident before he was brought to my barn, but it hasn’t affected him at all! In fact a few years ago (maybe 3 I guess) he was still ouch-free and trotting x-courses!! Since then he has shown some signs of aging and I don’t believe he does anything but trailride (at a walk) around or munch on grass! But he’s a delight…recently he left my barn to live permanently in a field down the road where he runs to his heart’s delight.

The remarkable thing about Brassy was until he started being “ouchy” (he was never pushed to do anything, in fact he used to perk up when being ridden) he would find the spots, count his strides, do the change, all of this AUTOMATICALLY! He was the ultimate, ultimate trot-x king! In fact he used to canter figure-eights in his private paddock and do flying changes…!!

It’s great to hear about his past! If Cheryl wants to get in contact with his current owner just for kicks, email me and I can give you her number.

Oh look…a photo of DUDE

droop it, coreene, LOL!

I remember watching him also. He would also turn his horse loose in the ring with the tack still on and the horse would jump the fences around the outside if he won, once he did it at the Garden. The horse’s name was Chichester and the rider was ? I want to say Kevin Bacon, but I am afraid I am thinking of that name because it is in the previous post.
