RIO?
I can still see GHM and the full cheek snaffle with 2 reins on it.
KLG gets the first 1/2 of the question right. Bernie DID show Royal Blue at NY as a working horse. But it was Linda Hough who rode him in the Ladies to Ride class at NY (and won it, which helped to made Royal Blue champion).
I remember this story because, years later CeCe Durante had Royal Blue and wanted to retire him. Linda offered to retire him to Sutton Place because he was the first horse she had ever ridden at NY and that very first ride resulted in a blue. So, Royal Blue spent his final years at Sutton Place with [Spindletop ] Showdown and Sutton Place (the horse)). Those three had recently all died within several months of each other (one imagines that they were great good friends out in the field and they missed each other and so died out of loneliness…) when Valor retired there to live out his final days.

Judge licensed in all AHSA divisions? Yes it was “Uncle” Joe Vanorio (god bless him)! He talked me (and parental units) into rescuing a Lippizan from certain meat packing (who, incidently, turned out to be a wonderful horse). He showed me (in the midst of famous hunter, jumper and eventing trainers), to listen to the plethora of horsemen, but hear what my horses had to “say” first. I learned a lot about how a horse thinks from him.
He was licensed in 21 divisions (back then it included Walking Horses, Apps, QH and other breeds who have since left the AHSA).
He was the only one. One other held licenses for 20 divisions.
YES WE DID HAVE CARS AND ELECTRICITY BACK THEN! heehee
Anybody remember his sons name - who managed “Kentucky Stables?” (I don’t sorry!).
To all going to convention - fly carefully (wear shoes that slip off!).
