Fair Hill 2019

I’m wicked iut of touch, but how do you get a 15 if it isn’t time?

Flag penalties for when the majority of the horse’s body doesn’t go between the flags despite making a jumping effort at the fence. It’s a new penalty for 2019. They were handing them out like candy today.

Thank you. Now that you mention it, I knew that from watching Burleigh. I don’t see why they don’t just use the same springloaded breakaway poles that they use in ski racing.See them in action at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9M2kC4GLK7g

Properly anchored, they are not coming out all the time needing to be reset, you won’t have shards of sharp broken sticks, and if you straddle one there is no question what you did. Main obstacle I see is you would have to convince the manufacturers to make them in white, (They can do that. I asked.)

Wow a lot of RF, E, W and R! Any insight if this course was harder than previous years.

I was there and personally didn’t think it looked more challenging than any other year… although it’s been quite awhile since I was there as a spectator; last year I was volunteering and only saw my assigned fences. Then there was a big gap of years I missed as I was living out of state. Quite honestly, I don’t know what the problem was. All the falls seemed like they were bad luck/unseating the rider as opposed to scarier situations with both horse and rider going down. Apart from the coffin complex, the fences seemed to ride straightforwardly.

It will be interesting to hear rider reactions.

Fair Hill is always tough IMO because it’s a lot of terrain. It will be interesting to see how they duplicate that terrain in the new 5* course, as it’s being built across the road in a flatter area.

I wonder if the hard ground was a factor? Maryland has had a really dry summer.

A lot of the horses I saw looked really tired coming home. I saw Mara DePuy and Congo Brazzaville C galloping between fence 22 and 23 and thought to myself that there was no way they were going to make it to the finish. Both horse and rider looked exhausted. I wish I hadn’t thought that though because they promptly parted ways at 23B (the last water complex).

I bet there will be a lot of withdrawals overnight.

Comment from Will Coleman about his 15pp with video.

Dondante was amazing today. Only 9 years old and in his fifth advanced level start, he was simply superb and put in one of the few double clear rounds at a difficult CCI4*L. Four hours after he completed the XC, he was given 15 penalties for the “flag” rule for this fence shown on the video here. Al hung a leg jumping the corner, and twisted slightly, dislodging the flag, but his honest intent was obvious and his body clearly jumped the obstacle in question. To say I disagree with the ruling is an understatement. There are so many things I want to say, but I will leave it for when cooler heads might prevail! I can say that I am very proud of my horse and my program, and thankful for all that I have.

Oh man, I didn’t see that. I’d be mad as hell if I were Will too, what a load of crap.

Another freaking questionable flag penalty for Will Coleman? Ridiculous. I didn’t agree with the Kentucky one, either.

Interesting that it was 4 hrs after the fact. I wonder if the judges had this replay view, or if theirs was from a different angle?

Good holy moly SO FREAKING IRRITATING -WHERE- is the leaderboard? All I keep getting is sent back to this when I try to access results:

Please help and thanks! This is crazy how hard it is to find the standings!

Never mind, finally found it!

There was one point in the live stream where they were showing a rider jumping a corner, and Packy pointed out a volunteer with a phone camera who was positioned specifically to get video of the rider coming through the flags. I wonder if the officials reviewed all the footage from all the videoed fences. Not only did Will Coleman get 15 penalties after the fact, Philip Dutton and Doug Payne did too.

Boyd was commentating for a while too, and the course review seemed to be that it was a pretty typical DiGrazia course rewarding accurate, forward riding. There were a lot of glance offs at corners.

Something I did notice is that I felt like the flags were hard to see on some of the corners and skinnies. Particularly the brushy C element of the coffin complex. The flags were kind of buried in the brush, and the fence sort of blended in with the surroundings. I wonder if lighting compounded visibility issues at times, which is why so many horses missed entirely. Because otherwise the fences seemed honest and fair.

The after-the-fact 15s are hard to stomach. It also seemed almost too coincidental that the folks who received them were at the top of the standings; as if they only cared about the penalty if you were clear and could impact the top placings.

Frustratingly Quinn and I were assessed 15 penalties following #crosscountry yesterday. We joined a healthy list of top competitors to receive them. I was able to meet with the officials and their decision stands. Our sport has some tough choices ahead. Quinn jumped his heart out, as you can see from my perspective, I hit the flag with my right knee. We are asked to jump on tighter and tighter angles to jumps not initially designed to do so, situations like this will happen. This footage is inadmissible being that I provided it, but the benefit of the doubt should go to the horses!! He deserves to sit with the leaders. He is there in my book. #onwards #vandiver #champion #eventing

Phillip Dutton also posted on Facebook about his 15 point penalty, but I haven’t seen a video of it. I really hope they revisit this rule - it is so frustrating that horses that are clearly jumping the obstacle are getting penalized.

Anybody know what is going on this morning? Nothing live on USEF Network yet. Thought there was the jog and early jumping for 3 star.

They are only streaming the 4* SJ

The livestream is up & says the 3* starts @ 10:30.

This year, any penalties we have given for a missed flag have subsequently been removed by the Ground Jury - even when the 4 FJ at different positions were in agreement! The reasoning: riders are always given the benefit of doubt.

I’m not quite following. The four riders who were given the missed flag penalties still have them.
