Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

It could be my horses are just extra? I think the disc closure sits up high on the neck compared to a lot of other chest closures.

Then, I’m in FL and my horses graze all year, I use ground feeders and hay is always fed in a head down position. Perhaps I’d be less bothered by the disc if I had snow cover and hung hay nets!

The disc closure has been sturdy for me so far.

My order history proves I ordered the wrong size. :woman_facepalming:t2:

Weirdly, the 81 would fit my horse if his croup was higher.

@lenapesadie Doh!

Singing the praises of the 100g blankets again tonight. Windy and in the 40s, going down to the upper 30s. It will be sunny and well into the 40s by the time I feed in the AM. These are the type of nights I would be stressing between their sheets and their mediums. Instead it was a no brainer to just throw their 100g blankets on yet again.

Side bar: I can’t believe I’m still conversing about blankets. Many apologies. But it’s probably the only thing I have control over right now.

My other horse is an 81 so I’m blaming that. And he needs a new sheet set too.

My 84 horse is comfortable in 80-100 gram standard neck down to freezing and then some if it’s brief (normal here) and or pleasant (not blowing sideways or raining). It’s a very versatile and useful weight. I have the 100 liner and no fill hood that matches it in my cart. As little as I use a medium on him it makes way more sense for me to also get him a 200 gram liner long term. I like that a medium hood is available.

I’m thinking the blanket “bag” things discussed upthread would suit my place if I was storing liners, sheets and hoods. Obviously having to move liners isn’t as fast as having separate weight blankets but I use the 100 gram weight so often I think it’s worth trying. I think you’ll like the 50 gram a lot too. Especially in transitional and mild type weather.

Blankets are a solid topic. I’m here with you working it. Now if I could control Mount Blanket in the barn, I’d be golden :rofl::rofl:

One nice thing about liners is if your horses will tolerate owner stupidity like mine do, you can just unclip the liner and rip it off without removing the sheet. It’s very quick and super handy in the early mornings before work when I want to leave them in a sheet. But… you pay for it later when you have to take the sheet off to put the liner back on. Plus there’s that whole problem of standing where you can get kicked while you yank a staticky liner out from under a sheet.

I’m noticing the actual blankets are less warm and more breathable than the liner + sheet combo, which is a good thing for me. They can tolerate wearing them in temps where they would have been too hot with the 100g liner setup. That’s been helpful because I work away from home and feed before dawn during the week.

I haven’t gotten too obsessive about hoods yet. Don’t let me fall down that wormhole! :joy:

There are probably 10 days a year where my horses wear any clothes during the day and I work from home 4 days a week. But I agree that the liner plus sheet is warmer than a blanket. Sadly the XL line doesn’t have a 50 or airmax liner. I considered trying a regular Rambo 50 gram for the hard to fit horse instead of XL but $ and the fit issues said XL was better bet. The horseware sight indicates that XL has the most neck room and after seeing the 81 XL on him I am glad I didn’t try the Rambo.

I think the hoods give me a lot more flexibility. And so far high necks don’t fit either of my boys as well as standard necks.

Figuring out what blankets work for you, your horses, your schedule and your climate is really quite nuanced. And requires much blanket shopping

What I need right now is a twin size flat sheet to drape over my horse while trying blankets on her. I’m not having much luck finding one that’s just a flat sheet and not expensive. Inquiries on a local Everything Free FB group netted me… crickets.

I may ask my MIL today. She probably has the ones she bought for DH’s bed when he was 4 (he is 59). What a weird present to ask for, though.

Please post after 6 months!! I am seriously considering this one. I live in Canada on the prairies so we get quite chilly weather but my mare runs on the hotter side so I’m thinking about this for the 2-3 weeks of autumn weather each year that we get.

I would probably jump off a cliff before buying myself a jacket or shoes or something that cost $300 and I would only plan on wearing for less than a month each year but… let’s not have that conversation.

I probably have one if you want to pay shipping from Maryland! I bet I could stuff it in a flat rate envelope or small box.

Don’t your local thrift stores sell bedding?

I put the liners on AND take them off without fully removing the outer turnout layer. I don’t find I need the front attachments from the liner to the turnout— only the hind.

Pull tail out from under the strap and undo belly surcingles. Fold turnout halfway up so the butt is exposed. Put the liner on over the butt and pull it forward while lifting the turnout. Unfold turnout back over. Reach under the front of the turnout and do up the front of the liner. Redo surcingles. Pull tail back over flap. Snap liner in in the back. Done.

I can switch the liners too, but I am mean and just fold the blankets up from behind and make my saints of horses stand there with all the blanket on their neck while I put the liner on. Surely after all I do for them, they can be a coatrack for under 1 minute?

I do have one horse I wouldn’t dare do that with, so it really depends on your herd. She’s be in the next county with a sheet over her head in a blind panic. Princess ain’t gonna coatrack for nobody!

Not that I’ve noticed but I haven’t been in one for a while

Good idea! Amazon has them for $8.

I totally agree. I don’t have a 50g, but I have the AirMax liner, which they say is about the equivalent of a 50g. It’s great when you just want a little more than naked (under a sheet).

The donkey’s 50g Amigo Pony Plus arrived. I didn’t get to try it on until after dark because it rained all day. But I feel like my wish has finally been granted!

Terrible photo, I was so excited to try it on I didn’t even bring her in. But the fit is :100: compared to everything else. It is a hair short for her; I may have been able to go up to a 63” because her bum hangs out a bit. But it is far better than anything else I own for her. And it came with a neck cover.

Now I just have to resist the urge to buy her one in every other weight. :joy:

So maybe I’m finally satisfied with my updated 50-100g collection.

My search continues, and I’m about to spend $100 returning blankets, argh.

Weatherbeetas were all wrong for my mare. Huge gaping necks. I tried two styles of Amigo XL 1200D, and they were much too tight in the shoulders. I had one I thought would work, but my mare could barely walk in it. Also, the Amigos were static magnets, and she nearly had a meltdown every time I removed one.

My BO let me try a size 72 Rhino Wug on my mare, and it was a little short but otherwise fit well. I’m normally not a huge fan of the Wugs as she can be high-headed at times (Morgan), but this was good enough that I’ve ordered a size 75.

She’s just a funny size. She is pretty low-slung (just under 15 hands, wears a size 75 or 76), has very prominent and long withers, and deep shoulders, but is very narrow-chested. Schneiders sort of worked but didn’t seem to hold their waterproofing well… This was about 12 years ago.

And the color looks so good too!

I think you’ll be very happy with the 50 gram. It’s very comfortable for the horses imo.

My Friesian cross can also be very high headed at times. The Rhino Wug is fine for him in that stance; it’s just when he has his head down in grazing position that it’s a problem for him. But I’ve been happy with the blanket otherwise. Sturdy, doesn’t shift etc.

I’m continuously disappointed with Weatherbeeta. The donkey has two: a comfitec sheet and a comfitec heavy weight. The front closure not only is strangle-ly, but it gets bunched up. Also the waterproofing is disappointing. This weekend we had a soaking rain on Saturday. They donkey’s fairly new WB sheet was completely soaked through despite her staying the in the shelter more often than not. Meanwhile, my walrus of a mare was in a six year old Amigo Bravo sheet, standing in the rain all day, and was completely dry with the exception of her chest.

Maybe the higher end models are better.
