Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

Static magnets.

In the late 90s I remember having fleece lined blankets. The static was awful. But the great thing about fleece is it retains heat even when wet. It also wicks moisture away from the horse. They worked very well in precipitation even if the blanket’s waterproofing failed. Back in the days where I would be riding in the indoor pretty late into the night in the winter, I would put a slightly large fitted fleece cooler under a sweaty horse’s blanket to help them dry. All the moisture would wick to the edges of the cooler hanging out and dry them out far better than I could. But I don’t love it as an every day blanket material because of the static.

That’s what I was thinking; static.

I’ve seen many use the Bucas fleece lined and not mention anything about it. My Eskadron sheet is fleece lined, but I got it rather cheap, and just needed a 72 to tide me over until horse grows into my existing collection of 75’s. So I’m not sure how much use it’ll get, really. Does seem to be a decent concept re moisture wicking.

I loved the fleece lined lightweight we had. It was either 50 or 80 gram and I got them years ago from chick’s for $25.

I didn’t have too many issues with static but if I did I rubbed a dryer sheet over it.

I used it a ton on the old mare.

Hi neighbor!!
I had the same dilemma as you that day - old lady pony got her blanket stripped of her 100g early in the morning and went naked for the rest of the day. She has a pile of hay in her run-in (which she generally chooses not to eat). She’s in her full winter woolies now and I’d generally rather her be a little cold than over-warm, since she can eat more hay if she wants to, but she can’t (thankfully) take off her blanket if she’s too warm.

I got the 100g turnout by Shires from Riding Warehouse for $56. It’s a nice plaid and fits great. My TB has high withers and a pretty steep shoulder angle. This fits him as well as the Amigos I have. I haven’t washed it yet but it seems well-made and sturdy. And it’s pretty on my older gentleman.

My horse isn’t clipped this year, but his winter coat is much lighter than last year’s. He’s a hard keeper and I don’t want him burning calories trying to stay warm.

Is what you bought a waterproof turnout? The blanket at the link is a stable blanket, not something meant to be turned out in, and not waterproof.

I’ve always been impressed with the Shire’s rugs, they seem very well put together!

Oh my goodness hahah. A wee bit big, don’t you think?

Sorry I’m so late to this thread. Thank you whoever sent the link up thread. What are John Whitaker blankets like quality wise? I see a 200g in orange that is calling my name even though I have almost zero use for it…

You’re right, it is described as a stable blanket, but I just assumed it was a turnout because its shell is 1200 denier, which is pretty tough. But it doesn’t claim to be waterproof.

I checked the Shires website also—not waterproof. But it’s $20 cheaper at Riding Warehouse. Perfect for my needs.

Can anyone speak to how the rhino 100gs fit? Not the wugs. My morgan mare is thick with big neck/shoulders and the amigo rainsheets fit her pretty well but the 100g I just bought seems snug and her bum hangs out a tiny bit. I guess the fill changes the fit a bit.

Feronia says YES to the Rhino Wug 100 gram turnout. She’s wearing it more than any other blanket. The neck slips down some but goes back into place once she lowers her head.

Any ideas on how to rehab the velcro on the Rhino Wugs? I have a 100g that is at least 4 years old at this point and it’s in perfect condition except the velcro is not so sticky any longer. I so wish they did the extra strap of velcro on the rhinos that they have on the rambos.

Yes, that is definitely a weak point. It can probably be replaced by a blanket repair person.

Have you tried cleaning it with a wire bristled brush? If it’s just a gunk problem, that usually helps!

I absolutely love the Rhino 100g Wugs. BUT… 2 things. One, my mare is getting a rub on her right shoulder point. Only the right. This is the foot she prefers to have forward when eating/grazing. Two, the blanket is constantly listing to the left. Even the brand new one. This doesn’t happen in the regular neck blanket nearly as bad!
Sigh.

I’ve fallen out of love with my 100g Rhino wug, too. It fits more snugly and shifts more than her regular neck Amigos and Rambos of the same size. Plus I think her neck is too hefty for the Wug style.

I have a plan to get through the next few weeks using it, then sell it and buy a regular neck 100g Amigo or Rambo for next season.

Try the plastic front Velcro ones for horses who get blankets that shift. I found that enclosure helps.

Ditto on the Rhino Wugs though I have the medium. I bought the Amigo XL sheet (for drafty types) regular neck with hood and even though the surcingles are a a bit too big and it’s extra roomy it stays beautifully in place (even w random liners under it) and doesn’t choke him when he has his head down in grazing position. I plan to get him the same in medium and move the wug to a new home.

Do you find the regular neck Amigos and Rambos fit similarly? Have you ever tried the regular neck Rhino?
