Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

My regular neck Amigos and Rambos fit her great. I don’t own any regular neck Rhinos to compare.

I love my Rambos but agree the Wug really only fits a specific body type… unfortunately, “sausage shaped with brickhouse shoulders and withers” doesn’t seem to be one of them.

I ended up sizing up to get an okay fit with Rhinos on one of my guys who is really wide, but not very long. I found every blanket I tried seemed to put pressure across his shoulders and neck, and sizing up beyond his usual size (81) seemed to adjust it a little.

Someone on forum pointed me in the direction of Rambo XLs, which I guess are cut with large, tall withered horses in mind – but I haven’t found any local to me to confirm.

I don’t know what those are? Can you post a picture or link?

My mare is tall skinny and leggy. OTTB. She’s not especially high withered, lucky me I think she’s just right. She’s not broad shouldered but does have decent ones.
It’s too bad because I really prefer Wug over using a neck cover.
Horses! It’s like finding the perfect pair of jeans.

This kind :joy: First picture I find that shows it haha sorry I can’t remember the proper name for that closure and I’m too lazy to google right now lol

ETA just remembered they are called disc closure.

I haven’t seen anything marketed as a Rambo XL not even on the Horseware site. Maybe I missed them though. My Amigo XL is nice but I would pay a bit more to have the Rambo line features in the same cut!

My horse gets lathered in sweat in a sheet at 60!

I’m a part of a blanketing group at the barn as our barn does not provide it. It’s been a bit of a pain because each horse is different and each owner worries about something different.

Mine too. Last night I put their medium weights on because the temp was supposed to to drop into the 20s. The front kind of stalled and it was around 40 this morning when I fed. My horses were borderline about to start sweating.

I don’t think I’d even know what to do with a horse like that, it would throw me so much :joy::joy:

My old lady mare has been in a medium wug lately in temps up to 50s, sunny, no wind. I keep checking and she’s just nicely warm, not even particularly toasty!

They’re all in 450g with necks for this cold blast, and I’ll add a 100g liner for her tonight, too.:cold_face:

He’s built for winter and he’s even partially clipped ( a modified bib clip, chest and belly only) and lives outside with a shelter. Honestly the only reason I blanket him at all is because he lives outside. We only blanket below 25 degrees unless it’s wet or crazy windy.

His heavy is a 300 gram and usually sufficient. Although I’m actually contemplating grabbing 100 g blanket as well to double up since it’s been kind of a brutal winter. He hasn’t really ever seemed cold except for one night when they were in mediums but it was very wet and blowy. The blankets got pretty saturated and all know the horses were still dry I did opt to switch to heavies even though it was 25 degrees.

Have you had any issues with your 100 g Wug? My liner has ripped and Dover (where I got it from) says they don’t know when they’d be able to replace it because they’re on back order. Pretty disappointed that my liner ripped. I mean great that it’s still waterproof but disappointed about the durability of the lining. My other Rhino sheets are fine, just this one.

I’ve had a 100 gram wug for at least 4 years now … no issues other than I need to clean the Velcro at the chest.

Bumping this up to say Adams has some good deals on the Horseware again. And they’re the only one I found with the liners in the size I needed as well. I don’t change my own blankets so I try to keep the groom in mind when I order and liners can be a pain, but horseware only connects at the shoulder and seem to be well liked because of the lack of leg straps!

Any idea if those are compatible with high neck sheets? I only have high neck Schneider’s sheets but have been meaning to pick up liners to use with the sheets and the full neck medium blankets (as we keep getting arctic blasts of negative temps).

I don’t think so, the velcro placement and width is specific to the normal neck horseware blankets

I’m about to pull the plug on another Rambo Supreme unless someone had something comparable they knew about for less.

What about this dry liner? Anyone have one? Seems like a good idea?

:raising_hand_woman: I got one earlier this year when I found it on sale but I’ve only used it a few times. Overall I like it because of the convenience. The few times I’ve used it were when my horse (an unclipped TB) was only lightly sweaty after riding so I put it under the turnout sheet and threw him back out. As advertised, he was dry by the time I pulled the sheet off when he came in for the night. But I’m not sure how well it does when they’re more sweaty. I got it in early April so I’m curious how it will do in the fall and winter months.

I have also used it as a 50g liner when you want a little extra under their sheet and also have the peace of mind that it should, in theory, wick in case the horse does get too toasty and sweaty.

@fordtraktor, how did the Autumn Series sheet fare? I’ve had my eye on it since it came out last year. I got the Summer Series sheet this year and have loved using it through the spring, summer, and our fall so far. My horse lives out 24/7 from May through November. I’m teetering between buying the Autumn Series (mostly because there are some good sales going on right now!) or just sticking with the summer one until it’s time for his “full” sheet and revisiting this topic next year :upside_down_face: TIA!

I love the Autumn series! And I got rid of my regular sheet, because it works well up to my Duo which is 100g. It’s nice to be able to simplify my blankets in use! My horse seems to like it too, and he is very finicky/hard to fit. He is the king of shoulder rubs, but this one works fine.

Ohh thank you for the review. I do a trace clip on one of my guys and I hate leaving some of him wet under the blanket, so I use alcohol and wipe it well to dry him off but it is drying on their skin. I saw the Bucas blanket that had a liner like this, but don’t love the closure system so I may try this liner instead.

Ok … bumping up for my new pony Lola, who has no blankets. She’s probably a 70 or 72. She has a higher Morgan head carriage and no withers. I don’t think a high neck will work on her.

The barn where she lives is very specific about blankets. Waterproof turnouts only, one each of rainsheet, light, medium, and heavy. They already know I prefer blanketing lightly. She will be out 16-24 hours a day, with a nice shed.

Based on last year’s experience, what has worked and what hasn’t, for 100g turnouts, because that’s the first thing I’m looking for. Highneck/Wug style did not work well for my other Morgan. The neck part just folded back and stayed there when she raised her head high, and caused rubs.

Am considering Schneiders in the Vfree or Cutback style. They do have some models with a warranty.

I just ordered one when I read they are lightweight. Oh how I loathe a heavy blanket. All I can think of is pressure on the withers. The Rambo Supreme arrived and boy is it quality but so heavy. Ugh.

The Dry Liner is really nice - such a quality fabric. Does run small IMO.

So I just ordered the Autumn Series and excited - it sounds amazing. My newest horse is PSSM2 - the universe decided I needed to learn even more patience apparently. So blanketing and keeping him warm is important. I hate blanketing. It’s torture because you watch the weather like an OCD person and I’m gone from early in the am til late afternoon most days.

Thanks for the heads up and also about Adams having their cash back special. Yay.
