Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

I’m so disliking the new Rambo Supreme (navy) that I’d like to return it. I’ve never felt that way about a Rambo. What I’m noticing is my guy stays warmer in the older lighter black and gold supreme. The new one even has 50 grams fill. My gut feeing is that heavy plastic feel on the outer shell is actually a problem.

Then the liner that came with it has cheap snaps. From the first use one of them doesn’t want to open. Also notice the metal hardware on the navy Supreme feels cheaper than other Rambos in the past.

Jeffers Pet has the old version of the supreme in black and gold now if you are looking.

Oh thank you. I think I’ll order one. I love that sheet.

Me tooooo… i used the navy supreme sheet this weekend in the rain and while my horse was one of the few that was still dry, that thing was even heavier!

Which brands and styles have you already tried? For 100g I have Rhino, Amigo, and Weatherbeeta. To me she looks like one who needs something that snugs up higher on her neck but has gussets for shoulder freedom.

I tried all of those. The neck openings were way too big and they came up high on her neck, which is a problem for a naturally high-headed horse. Also the drop was down to her knees! Schneiders may have another cut that will do; I’m looking into it.

That was one of the ones I ordered for Lola. I didn’t like it either. My older mare was at one time exclusively clad in Rambo Supremes, but over the years they wore out. She only has one now, a 420 g that hasn’t been used much because it’s SO warm.

Just a warning to be aware of the possibility for a lack of waterproofing with the Schneiders. have a back up plan in place, if she lives out.

I’m really disappointed in the new version of the Duo 100g that I ordered to replace one that the blanket lady ruined (used one winter, she washed it ONCE and it came back looking sparkling clean, but no longer waterproof :rage: so now I’m back to washing all my own blankets). The new one feels different, kind of flat and heavy, and I despise the hardware - tiny little slits in the metal that you have to feed velcro straps through drove me mad in just one day. But the worst thing is the cut is different, especially annoying in that the tail flap is much longer and stitched down more so my always clean gelding now poops all over himself. Look at the label and they are now made in Cambodia - up til now the Duos were still made in Ireland. Horseware was purchased by a venture capital firm so the changes are not unexpected, but still disappointing.

I have a Rhino 100g on order for him to see if they kept the cut the same (his old Rhino sheet fits fine), but I’m no longer a die hard Rambo fan. They can keep the marketing gimmick of the “bag for life” - I prefer the old hardy blankets that I could count on.

For as much as Rambo blankets cost, all of these recent negative reviews are completely disheartening.

I love love love my old Rambos, but I also bought my yearling a $50 midweight from Jeffers that is shockingly nice. The cut is perfect and it feels incredibly well made for the price point. Of course, I haven’t actually used it yet… I have no idea how it will hold up or if the waterproofing is functional. But I had zero expectations for it and so far have been pleasantly surprised.

Right. The new 1680 has the long tail flap and I’ve had to begun washing his tail cuz it’s getting manure stuck. It’s all so disappointing.

That makes sense if they sold the company to venture capital. Squeeze the profit. I had no idea.

I was just looking at the Optimo and see the same cheap round buckle with the lighter snaps. Not gonna hold up as well over time.

Where will we go? Who else makes high quality turnouts?

I am considering trying the Bucas Smartex line. But my mare is SO FREAKIN’ HARD TO FIT that I am loathe to get anything other than Horseware.

This is why I was avoiding Schneiders… but nothing else seems to fit! I do have an old but waterproof Saxon medium weight for her.

Some people seem to never have a problem with Schneiders, while others report that the waterproofing fails. One I bought for my other mare back in 2010 failed pretty quickly and while it was re-waterproofed, it never was truly waterproof again. The one I bought for Lola has a 3 year waterproof guarantee, so that helps I guess.

My older mare currently has 3 Rhinos (rainsheet, medium-weight, 100g Wug) all from the past 2-3 years and all holding up fine, plus 2 remaining old Rambo Supremes that are pretty beat up, but hanging in there. But I agree – the Rambo quality in the ones I tried on Lola was way down. And the prices way up!

I’m so glad we’re talking about this stuff and looking for solutions. I almost ordered two of the older 1000D Supremes out of paranoia and can see how we got into the toilet paper shortage.

Anybody have a review and opinion on this old style Rambo? Would be good for chilly, dry overnights if nothing else.

I am glad to read all this about the new Rambo’s. I had to sit on my hands to not order one during the recent sale. I have wanted one forever, but never could swallow the cost. Now maybe I wish I had, because it sounds like the new ones are junk.

@quietann do any of the Smartpak blankets look like they’d fit?

I tried a couple and they had the same issues as Rambo/Rhino etc.

Instead of making a new blanket thread, I guess I’ll just add here.

I’ve acquired a pony. He’s about 13.2 and looks like he’d go in a 69” blanket. Maybe 66”. Anyways. I’m hoping to get him some basic outerwear. By basic I mean inexpensive.

I’d like to find him something in the 50 / 100 gram range, with a neck cover of any kind and in a fun print if at all possible. Any ideas?

I really like my Amigo Pony Plus (I didn’t pay anywhere near that price):

The have more fun prints in some of their other weights.

Ponyo closed down their US site, but still ship internationally:

Chicks has all these closeout blankets:

Not 100g, but I was really pleasantly surprised by this blanket:

For $50, the quality and cut are much nicer than I expected.
