Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

I think I’m being convinced my precious ponies need a wardrobe of Premier blankets even though their current blankets are in great shape.

I’ve been lucky to have great luck with Weatherbeeta blankets, but one of mine could use a blanket with a longer drop than Weatherbeeta offers.

Please be kind about the mud, this past winter was just…awful. We’ve since sunk about $10k into rocks, sand, and earth moving to hopefully avoid a repeat. But anyway… This is the fellow who is rub-prone in his 200g high neck pumpkin blanket. He’s also low man so his blanket gets munched on a lot. I don’t have any pics (this past winter was brutal, I minimized pictures because…ugh) of the others in their blankets, but I figured this might show some details up close for folks. This blanket is 3 years old.

No chance to return as he needed something to wear when I found his Duo was no longer waterproof (this was last winter). It was only once he wore it some that I figured out the tail flap was different and causing his dirty butt/blanket problem. It was also only in using it that I noticed how much I hated the new hardware.

At least now when the Rhino I ordered arrives, I can see if they changed the cut of that before he wears it and return it unworn if so.

My older mare has a Turtleneck fly sheet. It’s been good but she’s stretching it out in weird ways.

The Premier 4 in 1 I ordered did not fit Lola, but that was a nice product.

Well poo. She’s high headed like my guy. So might not work for him. I just need something that doesn’t look like a mini skirt on him. He had a Rambo Supreme but it rubbed his mane terribly.

I’m going to remember this next time I need blankets. I did go look, having the other fill options is such a nice thing!

What I like about the Smartpak Ultimate line:

  1. Durability. My gelding went through a period where he was just destroying everything he wore. Including two Rambos :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: He really was not able to do much damage to the Smartpak Ultimate, but since it was under a 10 year warranty, when he ripped the front straps off, it was still usable, but I figured I might as well turn it in for a replacement. That alone is invaluable to me.
  2. Adjustability. The front straps are the buckle/snap combination that is both easy to use and easy to adjust.
  3. Price. When they are on sale, you can get an amaaaaaazing deal (like I scored!). Rambos never go more than 20% off and even then they are still obscenely priced!

I also really like the Dover Northwind line for all the same reasons. I have many older Rambos, many of which are still in great condition, but I can’t imagine buying any new at this point.

I agree. I’ve looked hard at the PE turnouts. I live in the Deep South and all those fill options sub 100 are extremely attractive. Since they are UK based, I’m guessing the waterproofing is pretty decent too.

@barnesthenoble can you comment on the different models and waterproofing?

I own both the Buster and the Titan lines and am very happy with both. I also have one from their now-discontinued Stratus line. All of them have held up beautifully and I’ve yet to have an issue with waterproofing. My horses live outside 24/7 and California rain can be VERY heavy at times. I left my PE blankets on 24/7 for days at a time during the multiple atmospheric rivers we got last winter and never came out to a wet horse. I can’t say the same of the other blankets I’ve owned. I do NOT baby my blankets, either–they get hung up on fences to dry, tossed in the horse trailer if not being used during a brief dry spell, and may sit in said pile in the trailer for awhile before going to a blanket cleaner if we’re in between seasons.

The Buster line is a slightly lighter denier (840 vs 1680 on the Titan) but I haven’t noticed a substantial difference in their toughness. The orange blanket in the pictures above is one of their Busters, and knock wood, no tears or marks from rough housing even though the wearer sometimes gets munched on. The Buster line has a higher gusset in the shoulder, while the Titan is a more classic fit. I have not noticed a substantial preference from the horses between the Titan and Buster blankets. My purchasing decisions between the two have been based on the following: weight, neck type (I prefer detachable or high neck over integrated neck), color. I’ve been happy with all of them.

Any suggestions for a turnout sheet for a very big boned, big shouldered, high withered, tall warmblood boy? His baker turnout sheet rubs his mane out bald and rubs the fronts of his shoulders every year, and I am tired of it!

I also recommend the Amigo XL. It’s like a big and tall cut for horses. So far it’s the only thing that fits my Friesian AQHA cross that is built like a tank. I really like it. They make a detachable hood, a 250 gram set and a couple of liners as well in the same cut.

I purchased a Shires TO sheet, hood and 100 gram liner for my Honcho pony.

Here he is being cute

the only ones I could find to fit my girl are the Weatherbeeta sheets with the tall shoulder gussets. Even the short gusseted ones would still rub her shoulders, and any blanket (even Rambos which I love!) without gussets was a plain old no go.

Have you ever tried the Rambo Optimos? They have such a HUGE gusset that it might work. I’ve never tried them personally but have always been intrigued.

So to update I ended up ordering this 100g sheet:

I’ve never heard of this brand but a trusted trainer was raving about it. Should arrive on Dec 1st.

I have one (Optimo) and ordered it too small (remember how they would tell you to deduct 3 or 4 inches - MISTAKE!) and now that horse passed away and it fits no one. That was 4 yrs ago and it is an amazing blanket. Just sitting in my blanket bin. :confounded:

Jeffers said they didn’t have the black and gold Supreme in my size and said they could sub a dusty blue color which was confusing for me because I didn’t think that Supreme came like that but I said no problem. Well, they sent another Supreme like the other one I just received that is super heavy and plasticky. And not the quality. So there’s that.

Then I ordered an Original w Leg Arches in burgundy and let me tell you all here right now Rambo is going down the tubes. I’ll post pictures. I got out an old green and silver Original and compared. The new one has straps much thinner with almost a sheerness to them. The hardware on the buckles is lesser quality, lighter and feels cheap. It’s noticeable they are cutting corners to make profit for their private equity group or whatever it is.

The end of a dynasty.

What’s weird is that they use what looks like the original hardware on the Amigos and the new stuff on the Rambos. So I am hoping this means they think it is superior to the old stuff, even though it is thinner.
