Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

Thank you so much!

ETA: just ordered 3 of the Flexible Fit blankets and hoods in the “Plus” sizes from “EquiShop”. The pricing was excellent. My PayPal total was $584 and some change so less than $200 per set.

I’m not her but I used these. From Amazon.

Note the rug proof only has enough product for two blankets while the wash has enough for many more blankets despite the bottles being the same volume

ETA: the bottles have instructions for sponge washing / application, machine washing and tub / sink washing. I used clean muck buckets but think a machine would have been slightly better.

I ordered those bottles above and used my front end loader washer at home and followed the instructions and do not recall exactly but it was easy. Once the sheet was done with the wash, I poured the RugProof in the detergent holder and let that rip.

Then airdryed the sacred Supreme. And tested it yesterday in 8 hrs of soaking rain. Nothing came through. Yay!

I did some online research and it appears this stuff really is safe enough to use in our washers.

This has given me hope! Now to find the time when hubby is gone and hope PeepyCat doesnt spill the beans that I did horse laundry at home

I hear you. I wrap the snaps in cloth and rubber bands to keep the noise down. My DH has accepted we wash at home.

OH great idea! and you used just a typical front load washer? not an “industrial” one.

Yep, just an regular LG front loader - plenty of room. On cold and air dry.

Ooh! You’ll have to report back. I do want to buy a plus sized one, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

Awesome! How nice that you hit their free shipping! Can’t wait to hear what you think, and how that plus sizing works for you

Not sure if you experienced this, but when I ordered, the price via PayPal was about twenty bucks higher than if I paid through their site with a card. I’m guessing it has to do with exchange rate and which exchange rate their site is using vs what PayPal is using, so it can probably shift. But for anyone ordering–just something to look out for.

Oh, and one more piece of feedback on the blanket itself: horse was out in heavy rain yesterday and stayed dry!

It’s exactly that. If you let PayPal handle the exchange/use their exchange rate, it will be more. You can select, “use card issuers exchange rate” or something like that during the checkout process with PayPal. My card issuer/bank offers the actual exchange rate, so I make sure to select that option.

I just did my one sketchy waterproof Schneiders with the Nikwax and am super happy with how it came out. Held up great even in a downpour. Definitely a fan of Nikwax now!

This arrived last Thursday and I’m really impressed with the look and feel. I haven’t tried it on yet because I was out of town, but I’m hoping to this weekend and will report back.

No leg straps (but a tail strap) and no fleece at the withers. But it has front snaps, and nice shoulder gussets. At a glance it looks a little smaller than my other 78s" so I’m interested how it fits.

I’m in the same boat as you. My very wide very short-backed mare wears a stupidly small size for her height and she’s a bit hefty now with the free hay buffet in the winter. I can just barely close the middle surcingle. Once it’s secured, it’s more snug than I would like, but whatcha gonna do.

I’m excited to see how the fit is on my hefty boy! I got a 50 and a 100 for my dude and a 50 for mom’s draft.

Yes the PayPal charged a little more but I felt more comfortable using it with an unknown foreign store. Amex wasn’t accepted

I didn’t see that option but I wasn’t looking for it! I’ll check more closely next time

I’ll report back for sure. AFAIK, there are no other options for “hefty cut” 50 and 100 gram blankets. So those are the weights I ordered.

Okay so maybe this is why I’ve never had waterproofing issues- i wash and rewaterproof with Nikwax for the last few years. We usually lay the blankets out in the driveway on a sunny day and spray with the power washer, then dry in the sun and then spray them. It’s worked well for me. Great products. I think I found them on this site too over the years.
Course, when you have a product that works and new blankets, then you don’t need anything for a while! darn it.

Well I finally was able to use the 100 gram Tough One last night. It was 45 degrees but a (brief) low of 20 degrees. My horse tends to run hotter even with a bib clip.

The nicest part is it buys me a least another hour before I need to go unblanket today.

They don’t get a lot of love here, but last I heard my sister has been perfectly happy with a couple of Tough 1 heavyweights for her two sedate older Standardbreds. I’m not sure she can tell you much about waterproofing, though, since heavyweights on unclipped horses are (at least by us, in NH) used at temperatures where liquid water is not a thing.

I have a few medium weights and a heavy by that brand and I’ve been impressed with the waterproofing for our climate. In Colorado so not very wet but we can get a dumping of heavy snow!

They fit my horse fairly well plus he is young so I figured stick with what’s working for now before experimenting too much.
