I bought a Tough One medium weight for my landlord’s semi feral donkey at our old farm. I only used it in the worst of weather, but I had no complaints with it. It was waterproof for the handful of times a year it got used. He didn’t destroy it. When we moved, I left it with him, although I doubt my old landlord has used it since. I would buy one again for the price.
My only complaint is the little rubber rings on the blanket straps can be such a pain to deal with when it gets super cold!! They would make it nearly impossible to do the belly straps! Nothing like it being 10° and you’re fighting with a strap lol. So now I just cut them all off and have had no issues with them staying buckled.
Well I went out to unblanket at 40 degrees and my horse marched over to me to get me to take it off! He was fairly sweaty… But to be fair it’s very sunny, not a cloud in the sky today. He would have been totally cooked in a medium weight though.
I’ll just have to make sure to take it off by 35° if it’s sunny. If it’s a cloudy day I could probably get by to 40° maybe 45 if it’s very dreary out.
I put my new Schneider’s Stormshield 1200d on my guy today. After a huge snowstorm and arctic temps, it’s been mild so the 100g is perfect for a bit of insulation and to keep them dry. He is a grey and looks quite dashing in his green & black. For the $70 or so I paid it was a deal. Got one for the little guy too but it’s a 72 and those are a bit too big on him until he fill out more.
I finally tried the 100g Loveson on ($70 at state line tack). I’m super impressed with the quality for the price. The hood is detachable and it has clips at the chest closure. It runs just a smidge small compared to his other blankets (a baker, a Schneiders, and a Smartpak, all 78”) but I don’t think I had room to size up.
Where I am, they don’t spend a lot of time in 100gs because it’s too cold (and he’s clipped), so I didn’t want something super $$. Very pleased with this so far, we’ll see how it holds up.
Not a turn-out question, but can anyone recommend a VERY INEXPENSIVE lightweight (like 50-100g) stable blanket that has a slippery/non-rub lining that I won’t feel bad about getting trashed when it is worn outside under a sheet? I moved one of my horses to a barn this winter so I’d have an indoor to ride in for the worst of the winter. I really don’t think there is an item of horse apparel that I don’t have. And yet, here, I am, searching for new clothing because nothing I have works for this barn. They keep the barn closed up and very warm, so they need to wear more outside than in. The barn preference is to add & remove a layer over a stable blanket. I do not want my stable blankets used - even under something - for turnout. So now I am looking to buy yet ANOTHER blanket to accommodate the barn’s protocol. $#@^(^$*&^@# I’m looking at the Shires stable blanket in 100g from Smartpak but I know that they ship direct from Shires and they take over a week to ship, which is less than ideal given that every day I am stressing over my current blanket situation.
ETA: I actually have 100g and 200g liners that could be used but since they only have the front closure I am worried about using them as essentially a stable blanket. Should I just try to put a surcingle on one myself??
For cheap, how about this?
Why don’t you want to use the stable blankets you already own?
I wouldn’t go with just a liner.
Because I have a Baker and a Horseware with with a poly-cotton (?) lining. Neither would be suitable to wear in turnout under a sheet.
The derby house would be great if it came in a 78
I have that Rambo, too, I think? It’s like a brushed lining? I’ve tossed a sheet over it without any issues.
Here’s another option!

Does the horse really need anything inside? Maybe just leaving him nekkid would work, just dress him to go outside?
One more, with more size availability:

Oh, funny, here’s that Horze one above from the same seller! But in the size you need from Amazon:
Thank you!! This is the internet sleuthing help I needed! I think I’ll order this one. She is clipped and between that and trying to keep weight on, I need to keep her covered. If it was my runs-hot gelding, he would definitely be naked!
GRRRRRRRRR. Even with prime it doesn’t show up til 2/12
I have a set of these. They are really nice blankets for the price. I bought them for a sales horse I had and when he left, they haven’t been used since because he was an odd size. I would purchase again though.
Can you use what you have until then? And then swap out?
The Big D blanket might show up faster. They also sell on Amazon (for a bit more) but my delivery date there is Feb 6.
This one is showing delivery tomorrow:
I think you might have to choose between fast and cheap!
Sigh, yes. I could go to Dover this weekend so that would certainly be the fast-not-cheap option too. I also have this feeling that no matter what I have it will be wrong anyway
Well…you could order both of those Horze blankets, and then return the one that’s priced less as the one that’s priced higher.
Do you have a 100g turnout she can wear under other clothes outside? That’s what I did. I have a Schneider’s and a few other turnouts that my horse lived in during heated barn nights and we just threw a medium or heavy on top to go out. No issues, and I’ve done the stable blanket method the barn wants as well. The turnout layering works fine.
It would save you some money and be doable today rather than waiting to ship something.
I do BUT it is the only thing I only have one of - and if this thread has taught us anything, we should all have multiple 100g turnouts But I need that 100g turnout (which is really the 100g liner + sheet) to go over whatever she wears inside. Otherwise, it would be a medium weight turnout over the 100g, which would be the equivalent of a heavy - which would be way too warm for the foreseeable forecast.
Anyway, my solution today is that I found a Dover Riders Thinsulate lined sheet on Poshmark It’s supposed to be warm-ish this weekend so I’m hoping a regular sheet will work until I get that.
According to UPS, my Busse blankets are scheduled for delivery on Monday. If they aren’t delayed, that’s less than two weeks from the date I placed the order. I’m excited and impressed.
I’m so eager to hear what you think, especially of that plus cut! Which colors did you get?
With how WET it’s been, I’ve struggled with swapping to heavier blankets when the temp drops, then finding my light weight blankets are still wet when I need them again Not a water proofing issue, just a holy cow this winter and the WATER issue. But I’ve been toying with picking up a Busse 100 g for everyone, just to have options. And geez, if I do that, I might as well do a couple more mediums…to hit the free shipping amount
