TLDR: out 5 blankets purchased for 4 horses, I’m STILL on the hunt for a 100g for 2 of the horses.
I am thinking we should title this thread “you get what you pay for.” Not that the idea was new to me, but buying 100g blankets for under $200 each is proving challenging.
All of my blankets arrived today. If shipping time matters to you, the blankets from Adams shipping from South Carolina about 500 miles away took longer to arrive than the blankets shipping internationally from Belgium.
The Rhino Wugs from Adams for my 2 mares:
They fit pretty much as expected. My warmblood’s fit her perfectly, although in the brief time she had it on (not even 5 min) she got very toasty underneath. It was about 55F when I was doing this, so I’m surprised she got that warm.
Dummy me, though, had a lapse in judgement and ordered a 78” for my standardbred because they were out of her usual 75”. Unsurprisingly, the 78” is huge on her. I think I will probably try to sell it locally and buy her something else. I don’t know why I didn’t select a different model for her when they were out of her size; I think I was blinded by the sale.
The Derby House 60” from RideAway: this was a disappointment. Initially I was really impressed with the quality out of the bag. But when I got it on the donkey, the cut is terrible. Like, so bad I don’t think I can use it. The buckles on the chest opening are down at her knees and the drop is ridiculously long. I don’t think I’ll go through the hassle of returning it, but I would honestly feel guilty selling it locally unless for dirt cheap. Maybe someone has an obese 12h Haflinger twice as wide as it is tall that could wear it. To be fair, I’ve had this problem with other blanket brands in their small sizes.
But, the silver lining is the $38 medium weight appears to be quite the deal. While the neck/chest are still generous, they fit my weanling fine. It’s only 600 denier, but the quality seems decent. Waterproofing is yet to be tested. It’s a bit thin feeling for a 200g medium, but it will definitely do the job. I kind of want to buy a few more to have on hand for emergencies or new horses because you can’t beat that price, but I’ll wait until I see how it holds up.
