Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

I am so exhausted at the end of the week, I really should have realized sooner.

The description said it was purple, lime, and aqua. The photo was a single stock photo of a navy blue blanket. So I was quite shocked to open the package; I was expecting predominately purple. But teal is good too.

Unicorns here we come. It was meant to be.

Not if you think of it more as a mobile tent than a blanket. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Because I am desperately needing instant gratification in the form of more horse blankets right now, I already placed another order for the donkey.

Pink unicorns or any other Ponyto print isn’t meant to be because they are out of 100g in her size in all but one pattern. And when I went to checkout, the total with shipping was going to be more than the horse size Rhinos I bought. That makes me all twitchy— I hate hate hate paying more for smaller blankets! I tried to rationalize it with the included neck cover, but no, I couldn’t do it.

So I went to Ride Away’s site, which has several 100g blankets at a nice price point. Plus they have that dirt cheap $38 medium I was eyeing for the weanling to destroy or outgrow, whichever happens first.

The green and orange 100g model is in stock in a size 60” and the $38 medium bumped my total into the free shipping range. Order placed!

At this price, my expectations are very realistic. The donkey has, uh, 5 other blankets already, so I think she shall survive regardless. I need an intervention.

I’m coming back to this thread to advise that if anyone needs a 66”, Equestrian Collections, has some screaming deals on Rambos

I scoped that Rideaway site out too. The price points are very tempting. My not too hard to fit TB could maybe use a heavyweight but I use that weight so infrequently that I’m not willing to throw too much money at it. I have two mediums, a 100 gram, a 50 gram, a sheet and a 100 gram liner that fit him so he’s not going to freeze to death here in FL. But he’s a sensitive type and I think a HW might be more comfortable for him than layered blankets. Please update when you get your order!

Also, if I recall previous threads right you’ve used the Amigo Bravo blankets? The ones with the v front snap closure? When you get your Rhino Wugs, I’d really appreciate it if you could review how they compare to the Amigo’s in regards to fit in the neck opening depth.

I’m pretty much paralyzed with indecision for my hard to fit chunk. He needs a medium but I’m having a hard time pulling the trigger on $300 plus for a blanket and hood for him. Guess I’m cheap lol

Yes I buy from them all the time, the prices are so good and it’s fast shipping!

@lenapesadie I can review, although my Amigos are all regular neck and the Rhinos arriving will be wugs. I don’t know if I will be able to directly compare them?

I’m both particular and cheap when it comes to blankets. I like to have everyone in Horsewear Ireland because they fit without issue and last. But I’m also too cheap to buy them at full price, and I can never find them at a discount or used in my donkey’s size. So she has a mismatch of brands, all of which I don’t love. We’ll see where these blankets from Ride Away fall on the spectrum compared to her others.

That’s a good point re standard neck vs Wug.

The quality of the Rhino I have is very good and I’d love to have comparable quality but … I’m not excited about spending so much without confidence that the fit will work for this horse. Especially for a medium that this horse might wear 20 nights per year in a cold year. From the pictures it looks like the Rambos would fit him but sheesh money. The Amigos are more questionable except the XL line.

I never find his size on sale either. Sad :disappointed:

The good news about having a variety of brands is that you get familiar with different ones!

My issue is that my guy views any front closure as a fun toy - until he destroys it. Fortunately he is fuzzy and I dont blanket that much. The only thing I have found so far in closed front is a Schneiders.

I miss closed front blankets! It’s really hard to find a closed front turnout. Some of the brands that cater to breed show folks still make stable blankets, but I think you are right that Schneiders is probably the only company with closed front turnouts.

TLDR: out 5 blankets purchased for 4 horses, I’m STILL on the hunt for a 100g for 2 of the horses.

I am thinking we should title this thread “you get what you pay for.” Not that the idea was new to me, but buying 100g blankets for under $200 each is proving challenging.

All of my blankets arrived today. If shipping time matters to you, the blankets from Adams shipping from South Carolina about 500 miles away took longer to arrive than the blankets shipping internationally from Belgium.

The Rhino Wugs from Adams for my 2 mares:

They fit pretty much as expected. My warmblood’s fit her perfectly, although in the brief time she had it on (not even 5 min) she got very toasty underneath. It was about 55F when I was doing this, so I’m surprised she got that warm.

Dummy me, though, had a lapse in judgement and ordered a 78” for my standardbred because they were out of her usual 75”. Unsurprisingly, the 78” is huge on her. I think I will probably try to sell it locally and buy her something else. I don’t know why I didn’t select a different model for her when they were out of her size; I think I was blinded by the sale.

The Derby House 60” from RideAway: this was a disappointment. Initially I was really impressed with the quality out of the bag. But when I got it on the donkey, the cut is terrible. Like, so bad I don’t think I can use it. The buckles on the chest opening are down at her knees and the drop is ridiculously long. I don’t think I’ll go through the hassle of returning it, but I would honestly feel guilty selling it locally unless for dirt cheap. Maybe someone has an obese 12h Haflinger twice as wide as it is tall that could wear it. To be fair, I’ve had this problem with other blanket brands in their small sizes.

But, the silver lining is the $38 medium weight appears to be quite the deal. While the neck/chest are still generous, they fit my weanling fine. It’s only 600 denier, but the quality seems decent. Waterproofing is yet to be tested. It’s a bit thin feeling for a 200g medium, but it will definitely do the job. I kind of want to buy a few more to have on hand for emergencies or new horses because you can’t beat that price, but I’ll wait until I see how it holds up.

Sounds like the derby house was the only outright bust! Horseware sells like hotcakes in the secondary market, I bet you can get all or just about all of your dollars back on that too big Rhino.

Try this for your wee one!:grin:

(105 cm is 60", they have them listed by back length, which is soooo weird, but the size chart is helpful!)

I have for many years enjoyed buying blankets just as long lasting as Rambos at sometimes as much as half the cost …Horseware blankets are obscenely over priced.

Someone will definitely buy the Derby house one if you post on FB.

What blankets last as long (15 + years?) have as good of a fit, and waterproofing as Rambo?

Adam’s is having 20% off Horsewares, if anyone is interested. Runs thru the 6th IIRC.

I sold the 78” Rhino yesterday and bought a 75” Amigo Bravo Wug from Adams just now. I have a problem.

It’s TBD if I’m going to try again for the donkey. @Simkie that blanket does look nice, do you have experience with that brand? The Derby House 60” reminded me why I stick to the devil I know in terms of brand when it comes to donkey clothes.
