Favorites from the 60's and 70's!!

Oh now, Lessonlady, Lennie and Chris Mazza. They lived a few houses down from me and our parents were great friends. We all hung out on our bycicles pretending they were horses. So our parents got us riding lessons at Cornell. Then we all got our first horses which were all creeps and had no trainer. Then you guys came to town for the shows with lovely vans and trainers and horses that actually made it around a course without stopping. Our dads looked at each other and said, “We ain’t doing this right”. That was when we all got shipped out of town, happily. Marilyn Cole followed but didn’t live close enough to partake in the bicycle escapades. Lennie and I were best buds from kindergarten. Our parents are gone now so I really have no one to ask as to their whereabouts. I’ll check out high school alumni and see what I can find out.

Back to horses: What about Brocklebank? Who had that guy?

Debbie Stephens, Missy Clark, Geoff Teal, Susie Schoellkopf, Russell Frey, Gary Young…and on, and on, and on…all Buffalo/Rochester/Syracuse area peeps who kept at it and made the big time. Sweet Tom in a Jelly Jar, riding juniors/Medal/Maclay was tough when you had to go in the ring against that quality in the shows weekend after weekend! Missy and I were the same age. Russell & Gary were one or two years behind us. Debbie and Susie were a couple of years ahead of us and Geoff was in between there somewhere.

Mohawk Flight was Gretchen Phillips…she lived down the street from me and we rode at Saddle & Bridle together as tiny tots.

Somebody save me and fill in the blanks!

Susie & John Bryner used to keep horses at S&BC during the winters, too. John’s Spit n Polish was leased by Candy Hoyt for a couple of seasons.

Remember Timmy Tomkinson’s little sister, Tracy? She could ride the bad 'uns with the best of them, too.

Aramis’s owner was Karyn Berger. She was a super nice girl who also rode at S&BC and went to high school with me.

I have no idea where Cynnie is these days. Her roomie from those days, Dianne Murray, is showing dogs now and works for Taylor Harris. I still speak to her on the phone every now and then.

I forgot that Marilyn changed SplitNix name to Pippin when she bought him from Mervyn & Bessie…we’re talking about the same horse…verrrrrry cute chestnut with a BIG jump.

Speaking of Dr. Ninos, I so remember when Meg Ninos and So Many Ways moved up from children’s to junior and started kicking but. Another teeny tiny tot from WNY. Any one remember Hill Camoragh and Debbie Phillips? If you ever saw them in the ring together, you wouldn’t forget them. I remember once years later scanning channels and stumbling across a movie about Debbie starring Debbie as Debbie. A truly amazing rider and a truly amazing horse–what a combo!

Let’s see…who else?

 • Terry Phillips (RIP) and The Catbird
 • Missy C and Bright Patrick and then Stella Starlight
 • Jennifer McCauley and Sara Lee
 • Jayne Schutt and Keelo's Kin, All Canadian...I think she had Stone Free for a while in there but the leetle grey cells are beginning to fade
 • Candy Hoyt and Standing Ovation
 • ________ and Lucky Valentine
 • Teeny Tiny Marion ____ who rode a big grey horse at Jackie Frohm's
 • The Clement sisters...Janice and __________
 • LisAnne and Lynn Jacobs...and Katie Jacobs as a teeny, tiny lead line rider. Yep, I remember when Jerry first started to ride 'cause I'm realllllllllllllllly old!
 • Joanne Sarafini and Take A Walk (before Camille Venezia)
 • Beth Snyder and Burning Foot
 • Kris Eberline and Market Rise
 • Teeny, Tiny Tommy Brewer and ________ his big bay
 • Pam & Leslie Willett with Fail Safe and then Dulcinea. Fail Safe would always get so crazy at the in gate because he loved to get in the ring and get the job done so much. I was at the in gate @Buffalo when he reared up and keeled over with Pam on him. He had a heart attack on the way in the ring. What a way for an old campainger to go...he was so eager to get in the ring and do what he loved to do, and he never know what hit him. It was so sad for Pam & Leslie, but it was a great way for him to suffle off this mortal coil!
 • Katie Stinson and Indian Summer
Robin and Not Again...I remember the day the trailer crashed. Mervyn brought home their halters and I spent hours in the basement of S&BC scrubbing them clean, oiling them and trying to preserve them so Mervyn could give them back to Anne and Susie. I sobbed the entire time.

Didn’t Gary Young show Motor Mouth in the Children’s after Susie aged out of juniors? Ah…it’s all coming back to me now!

Cindeye: I’m really impressed with the details you are coming up with!! I’m sorry I can’t help, I think these are juniors after I left with the exception of the Tomkinsons. Cinny rings a big bell with me but no details. When I thought I might want to come back to the horse world I got a subscription to the Chronicle and in one of the first issues I recieved was an article on Tracy. She married a race horse guy, in I believe they are in Arizona and retrains the flunkies. They bred one for the track, named Bradford(?) who has been successful as a jumper. I believe his name was Bradford because she said that was her favorite show as a kid.

Tracy Tompkinson

Is now married to Dave Kenley. He is an Arizona businessman and do have race horses, some they bred, the most notiable being Kirk and Bradford. Richard Spooner has shown their horses for years.

Really nice people.

Wow Cindeye! Your memory is in higher gear than mine! Let me see if I can elaborate on your list!
Susie Schoellkopf is the same age as I am (11 days younger actually) so I could never get away from her in competition. But I specifically remember every time I beat her as I considered it a real accomplishmnet! Carol Shepard was also in that same age group (9 days older than me!) so I had a lot of third place ribbons! Debbie Hecht was one year older but was in the medals with me for a long time. I remember trading horses with her at Saratoga so I got to ride her Zazarack! He was sooo fun! The workoff was after dark so they had all the ringside parking turn on their headlights! She beat me, of course. Do you remember a grey horse she had that won everything? It got sold and became a Spindletop horse and won everything. What was that one’s name?
I was good friends with Tracy Tomkinson back then! And her little sister Kim lives in my area. I haven’t seen her I a few years but I know she is married for a second time and plays golf!
Was Hill Camoragh an attractive bay with a white zig zag strip? I think I remember him.
I vaguely remember the first 4 dots on your list. Well, I remember Missy, of course, but didn’t see her much as a junior as I am older. I remember her riding a grey and she was good but nothing compared to what she became later!
Is Candy Hoyt now Candy Falk? She rode with Frohm.
Marion Watson and her sister Tasia rode with Jack too. Tasia was the tiny one and all guts!!
Patty Lee and Linda Saunders were Jack’s big stars when I first started showing. Then they went off to college, I guess.
I knew Louis and Katie Jacobs as teenagers and Geoff Teall was training them!! I am friends with Geoff.
The Serafini girls were very competitive! Never Say Never was my favorite of their horses. Their Mom was a hoot!
I gave Beth Snyder lessons when she was about 10 or so! Then her Dad bought her an expensive Appy that she couldn’t ride. They took it to John Shafner and he got it going for her. Then he convinced her Dad to get out of Appies and she went on to do well in the hunters and jumpers. Remember Breathless? Another Legend? Rocky Racoon?
Fail Safe (Safety) actually belonged to the Schoellkopf’s. I believe he was leased when he had a heart attack in the ingate. He was a real sweetheart. Tiny tots could ride him and yet he could march in the ring and win in the juniors!
I remember Katie Stinson and Indian Summer! Light chestnut and thin girl who were well matched. Did they ride with Nancy Ursetti Bechtal?
A friend of mine was driving the trailer in the accident that killed Robin and Not Again. That effected her deeply. She is a wonderful gal and is now a judge and is very active in the show world up in New England.
Yes, Gary showed Motor Mouth for a while. Then Anne Schoellkopf fieldhunted her! She wasn’t nearly as strong in the huntfield and apparently liked Anne’s way of doing things.
Tracy Tomkinson had a tumultuous first marriage to John Blair. I am glad she is happy now.
Do you remember Jim Robeson? I married him!
Ahh! I just remembered Debbie’s Grey’s name…Please Note!

By the time I knew Coming Attraction (barn name Spot) he was at sandron and Joe rode him. That was in the late 1970’s.

Casey Chamberlain’s brother, Chris Chamberlain was my financial advisor in Lexington, Ky for many years. Small World.

pb, I had no idea that Lilly Keenan was Pammie Carmichael’s daughter. Brooke was one of my best friends at Smith; I was a bridesmaid in her wedding. Of course, Pammie was Maid of Honor. Chance Step was Brooke’s before she came to Smith. Pammie was (is) one of the most petite, cutest people I think I have ever met in the whole world. If Lily takes after her mother, not only is she a knock out, but she will be riding ponies for many years. (Mr. and Mrs. Carmichael are also two of the classiest people in the world.) Quite a family.

---- I now return you to the horses…

Drew Davenport’s horse was Blue Birch.
Fred Bauer’s was Birch Bark

There is absolutely NO WAY anyone could go around the Dixon Oval (Wanamaker Oval back then) 1800 times in one year. The open show is only 3 - 4 days long and it is a one ring show. The entire H/J open show at Devon probably has 1800 trips. Even RJ couldn’t ride every horse in every class.

Sutton Place, Spindletop Showdown and Royal Blue all ended up at Champ and Linda Hough’s Sutton Place (obviously named after the horse…) during the 60’s and 70’s. I think that Champ and Linda were among the first to go East and raid the ranks of the very top horses to take them West, thereby raising the quality of the West coast competition.

Rodney Jenkins riding Idle Dice and Number One Spy… Rodney is now training racehorses in Maryland and never gets on a horse anymore! What a waste!

I can definitely attest to the latter

Tracy is a super horse woman and is doing really well in our local Grand Prix’s. The family also owns Lava Man, who ran in the Breeder’s Cup and has been having great success on the West Coast!

Susie judged week one at HITS Thermal. I was terrified she was going to end up juding my ring, but thank the gawds, she and I were never at the same arena. We had a good catch-up chat after I was done showing. I still try to stop in and see her every time I’m back in The Big Beef.
Carol Shepard was also in that same age group (9 days older than me!) so I had a lot of third place ribbons!
Isn’t it funny…I don’t remember Carol showing juniors at all. It must have been when I was still in children’s and not really paying attention. She was still had terrific eq when she was showing Roger’s horses as a pro.
Debbie Hecht was one year older but was in the medals with me for a long time.
Ran into Debbie at the last World Cup in Las Vegas and we had a screaming reunion in the hall. She nearly fell over when I introduced her to my daughter and muttered something to the effect of, “You can’t possibly be old enough to have a child that age!” Then I made her feel really bad by telling her I’d left the big brother at home.
Was Hill Camoragh an attractive bay with a white zig zag strip?
Yep. You can’t forget his rider, she was a sweet gal and a very determined rider who rode w/Billy Glass…rode with one tall boot and one Mary Jane on her short leg.
Missy Clark’s grey (actually it was Chuckie Graham’s if I remember correctly) was Stella Starlight.
Candy Hoyt is now Candy Bredenberg and she still rides at S&BC with Susie Schoellkopf. Not the same person as Candy Falk.
Marion Watson and her sister Tasia rode with Jack too. Tasia was the tiny one and all guts!!
Good on ya! I remember Tah-SEE-yah on a big chestnut when Marion was showing the grey, but can’t remember his name.
I knew Louis and Katie Jacobs as teenagers and Geoff Teall was training them!! I am friends with Geoff.
Tell that old coot Geoff that Cindi Perez says hi. Jerry and Geoff were extremely kind to me when Stranger died. They lent me tons of rides and let me board my OTTB in their barn when no outside boarders were allowed. Class acts, both of them! Jerry leant me one of his first purchases, Tuesday Afternoon, a big grey to show a bit that summer…and never charged me a dime for anything!
The Serafini girls were very competitive! Never Say Never was my favorite of their horses. Their Mom was a hoot!
I loved hanging out with their mom, Tommy Brewer’s parents and the Snyders and the Clements at horse shows. We always had a great time in camper land.
I gave Beth Snyder lessons when she was about 10 or so! Then her Dad bought her an expensive Appy that she couldn’t ride.
The appy was Burning Foot and Debbie used to show him in the jumpers. Um…long story about Deb & “Bernie” at Youngstown, but not really fit for public consumption. I loved Breathless and Another Legend…didn’t she have a big grey hunter, too?
I remember Katie Stinson and Indian Summer! Light chestnut and thin girl who were well matched. Did they ride with Nancy Ursetti Bechtal?

Katie rode at S&BC, too with Mervyn and Bessie. She died about a year or two ago. She went to my high school, too, and we were good friends. She had epilepsy and I think it finally caught up with her.
Do you remember Jim Robeson? I married him!
That one escapes me though I take it he didn’t escape you. What barn?

Oh, and I just remembered the name of Roger’s groom during the Brock era…Greg Foy. Jimmy and Greg used to come up to the beach house to hang with Jennifer McCauley (now Burger), Candy and me. Ah, those were the days. Jimmy ended up going to W&L when Jennifer & I were at Hollins, so we saw each other in college. I got back in touch with him by email (love google!) a year or two ago. He’s alive and well and living in Utica, but totally out of horses now.

Whew! My brain hurts!

Isn’t it funny…I don’t remember Carol showing juniors at all. It must have been when I was still in children’s and not really paying attention. She was still had terrific eq when she was showing Roger’s horses as a pro.

Carol was still with Jack Frohm when she did the juniors. That’s when she had Shadow Lake. They were practically impossible to beat…though I did manage to be champion and her reserve at Erie Hunt & Saddle Club in '68 (I think) Damn! I’m old! I think Carol was just out of the juniors when she switched over to Roger Young’s. Long unpublishable story on that one too.

You absolutely have to PM me! Big brother? Who are you??? I don’t remember Cindy Perez but I assume that’s your married name. And who is your big brother???

Yep. You can’t forget his rider, she was a sweet gal and a very determined rider who rode w/Billy Glass…rode with one tall boot and one Mary Jane on her short leg.

Ah yes, now I remember! She was amazing!

Good on ya! I remember Tah-SEE-yah on a big chestnut when Marion was showing the grey, but can’t remember his name.

I can’t remember the horses names either!

The appy was Burning Foot and Debbie used to show him in the jumpers. Um…long story about Deb & “Bernie” at Youngstown, but not really fit for public consumption. I loved Breathless and Another Legend…didn’t she have a big grey hunter, too?

I think Burning Foot was Beth’s second horse. The first one was a mare. It had been some high score champion on some appy circuit in Oklahoma or someplace far away. Beth was jumping 2’ on lesson horses and her Dad was really mad at me when she couldn’t get this expensive horse he had purchased (on his own) to go for her. I think he thought I was a lousy teacher. Truth was that Beth was still very much a beginner and the ap figured that out in 2 seconds and took full advantage! Years later her Dad and I became good friends. I worked for him on the Rochester International horse show for the 3 years he ran it. He was a great guy. I don’t rmember a second grey but I wasa out of the area by then.

Katie rode at S&BC, too with Mervyn and Bessie. She died about a year or two ago. She went to my high school, too, and we were good friends. She had epilepsy and I think it finally caught up with her.

Very sad. I didn’t know her but I do remember her.

That one escapes me though I take it he didn’t escape you. What barn?

Jim rode with Roger Young too. He had True Grit, Well Defined, Finders Keepers and a big hammerheaded liver chestnut (can’t remember it’s name) that he did well on in the AOs. Then he worked for Roger for a few years. He and George Paterson and Biv Balderston were Roger’s college educated grooms at one point! Later Jim rode professionally for Jim Hoppel for a short time. We had Robeson Saddlery Ltd for 20 some odd years till the discounters and catalogues did us in. Now he is the head saddler for Beval’s Connecticut store! He lived in CT for a year and now they ship saddles to him so he can live home.

Oh, and I just remembered the name of Roger’s groom during the Brock era…Greg Foy.

Greg Foy, whom we affectionately called Poh-lock, was one of my students! He didn’t ride half bad though he never got beyond lesson horses for lack of money. He worked off his lessons then Roger stole him from me to work with the show horses. Great kid! I heard he got into politics…working for some senator in New England…but even that news is 15 years old. And I believe he was married with kids! I had left by the time Brock was working for Roger.

I took off for California in '74 so I wasn’t around for some of the people you mentioned. I ran a H/J operation out of Bob Bradley’s Bonita Valley Farm in San Diego for a couple years. I knew Hap Hansen (he had had my job 2 years before me), Diane Grod, Jimmy Williams, Anne Kursinski (a junior at the time!), Susie Hutchinson, John Lipari, Sandy ? and ouch!
Whew! My brain hurts!
My brain is hurting too!

Opps! I guess I haven’t figured out how to work the Quotes yet. Sorry.

Does anyone else remember Susie Schroer and her “Fayre” horses and ponies?
Does anyone else remember Susie Schroer and her “Fayre” horses and ponies?
I loved her pony Fanfayre! She also had Scarborough Fayre and after that I am drawing a blank. It was always neat to see her tiny mom driving their van to shows!

I THINK there was Nutmeg Fayre, and Strawberry Fayre. But I can’t swear to it.

Lessonlady, did you teach at Roger’s in the early to mid-Seventies?

How They Got Their Names
My grandparents owned Cap and Gown and Navy Commander - I’ve heard a lot about those horses!!
I was visiting my parents over the weekend and mentioned to my mom that I saw Cap and Gown and Navy Commander mentioned on this board. She told me how they picked those names for those two horses. Cap and Gown got that name because my grandfather was the President of a univeresity at the time and Navy Commander got his name because my grandfather had been a Navy Commander. I always think it’s fun to hear how horses got their names so I just thought I’d share!

Brocklebank

It has to be the same one. After all, how many were there? I bought him from Richard Zimmerman as an unbroke three year old. He had gotten him from somewhere “out West” I named him after a jockey, Jerry Brocklebank that one of the girls was dateing.

I lived in upstate New York and showed him locally for a year before I sold him to Patty Tuttle of Gloversville. She showed him and, as far as I know, kept him.

Any other information would be wonderful to hear.

That’s the same Brocklebank!!! I just couldn’t remember who had him. I do remember a very small girl having him after Patty. I thought he was sold but he may have been leased. I remember how we all hoped and prayed we didn’t get switched to him in eq class because he was pretty good at testing a new rider. I just loved that little locamotive.

Joey Darby and Balalika----Tim Gowl and Spindletop Solid Gold
Small Pony Little Miss Muffett
SuperFlash–Late 70’s early 80’s
I’m trying to remember the name of Melanie Smith’s Jumper before Calypso…I can picture it, I watched it…just can’t remember it’s name.
The Graduate and Greg Schere (I’m sure I spelled his name wrong)
Southside
Princess Peroxide
Penny Machine
Dennis Murphy and Tuscaloosa

The list could keep going, so many back then.
