and when Coth makes up its mind, there is no way the horse will be lost.
Thank you msj! Jingling all the way from Canada and counting my few pennies!

Karakorum appears to know more about the horse’s current trainer than I do from reading this! They know the name of the trainer and how much money he’s made for them. I did tell my contact that the trainer won’t come down, so we’ll see what he says.
Caryledee: Karakorum isn’t a farm or breeding operation, they’re a syndicate. Basically you, me or anyone with the money can buy an interest in their horses. Because of that, I don’t know if they’re even able to spend investors’ money to buy back a horse who isn’t racing. It’s more like being stockbrokers, so they may have specific rules about how they manage their clients’ assets. It doesn’t hurt to ask, but I can see why they might not be swooping in themselves.
I know of one local syndicate who makes sure their horses are all retired to new careers when they stop racing. I wish they were all like this! They just rehomed a 3 yo who told them he hated racing in June. They gave him the summer to be a horse and put some weight on and started working with him slowly. In October, he went to a young girl to learn dressage. Two others are now jumping machines! So you never know…
You never know…they certainly are not at all happy with the situation he’s in. But from a business perspective I can see where it may not be as simple as fronting the money. They’re a corporation, not an individual, so it’s not as easy as writing a check.
And msj, I may not be able to put up a LOT, but we’ve all seen what COTH dribbles can do before! None of us offering would grudge it if it goes to help a horse.
I’m in, let me know where to send the check. Will be the best money I spend this holiday season!
Karakorum is a syndicate that operates on a very modest level. The minimum buy in is about $500. Most require 30 or 40 times that. The people who invest with them are generally very small time. If their horses don’t cut it at NYRA they are often sold at a loss. The decent ones often end up being claimed away by bigger outfits. I think that was the case with Patriot. He eventually dropped down through the ranks to where he is now.
I’m sure that they would like to help but they may be worried about setting a precedent.
I will offer a small sum to help. I’ll pledge $50 and if Karakorum steps up and no money is needed, I’ll give it to FLTAP.
Well being small may mean that such a syndicate does care though! You never know until you try !!
freakin’ double post board errors grumble grumble
Patriot was claimed for $50,000 after being quite successful for them, and he’s done well by his other owner(s).

MSJ, I can’t speak for the others, but when I offer money to someone to help an animal in need, it makes me happy, makes me fell less helpless. I am not rich, I work fulltime as well as a part time job to pay for my horses, so when I offer money, it comes from the heart, and I feel good being able to do something. I hate being asked for money, but I love offering it;) You were doing your part by attempting to help KP, and I wanted to do my part, too, even if it means just sending a check.
We all have to rally together to help the horses get re-homed!!!
On a side note, I will go have another look at somewhere:yes:[/QUOTE]
We could raise the money to save this one.
We COTHERS want to help and I fear for this horse if he goes south.
What is the next step?
Karakorum Patriot
OK, I know COTHer’s are the best.
I’ll give Missy a call and try to get over and see the horse this afternoon or ASAP. I honestly do need to see this horse to make sure I will be able to handle him. I know people have said he’s a gentleman but I really need to see this. I also have a number of items I need to find out as well, like any health issues. I want to see how bad his leg is.
I don’t think I have to have one of the volunteers to get me in if I can meet Missy or the trainer at the gate. I will tell them that there are some really wonderful people trying very hard to raise additional cash to buy this horse. While I doubt the trainer will come down at all, I am going to ask him just how much less he would take. Hey, it’s worth a try.
I’m going to call Josh at Karakorum and flat out tell them COTH is trying to raise the additional $ to buy him and that if anyone in their organization would like to contribute even $5-10, it would be appreciated. I think this horse was a NY bred, which means he has earned $ with every win for the breeder of the mare and the stallion I believe.
I’ve PMed foundationmare to see if she can continue to track down the breeder. I have 2 possibilities that came up on Google so I’m going to call the operator in the cities where they live to see if one of them were the breeder. Hey, it’s only a few bucks for the phone bill.
I wish there were some way to make everyone’s contribution tax deductible. I may try to call the FL Adoption Center to see enough $ were contributed to them if they could buy the horse from the trainer and then I’d adopt him. The first year they started, I donated a stall so hopefully that might count. That would probably be the only way to make it a tax deduction.
All of you are really wonderful! Do you have any idea how bloody hard it is to try to type when you’ve got tears rolling down your face? I have a few friends that I might try to call that might contribute something. I think I’ll hit my farrier up. He’ll get the business of pulling shoes and continual trims or whatever the horse needs.
Now, if you are serious about donating any $, I’d rather you emailed me (PM is a pita) with how much you can contribute. Once it looks like we might have enough, I’ll email back to everyone and give you my address. My email address is:
mjames5@rochester.rr.com. Don’t expect an answer back until this evening though.
If you want any references, I’ll list Louise from the board as she knows somewhat how anal I am with care, and my veterinary practice is Genesee Valley Equine Clinic at 585-889-1170.
Keep in mind that I have no intention of riding this horse as I no longer ride but I do have a very safe facility with 3-rail post and rail fencing of 3 good grass pastures and 2 sacrifice paddocks. I already have 2 horses “planted” out back so I plan to stay on the farm until all are “planted” there.
I don’t want to interrupt this amazing effort for KP, but I think I need to because I seem to have caught the “Fingerlakes Finest Flu” and I think I might be going crazy…
I am still waiting to hear whether Rock and Roll Roan is racing on saturday, and I am already preparing a stall in my barn for him (pending a vet check–please, horse, be sound!), but now I’m starting to think, if I’m shipping down one, maybe I could swing another? I told you I think I’m out of my mind.
Anyway, has anyone seen Cope with Three in person? Any additional info?
Unfortunately, in my situation I really need to only take the guys that have the potential for rehoming/resale, as I am renting a field and don’t have my own “forever farm”, otherwise, I would be taking the old warriors like KP
Thanks everyone!
Sara
Spyglass–I think someone up-thread said Rock and Roll Roan sold/was gone? Or was that The Rock Can Roll? (There are way too many “Rock” names this year…)
And yeah, there just seems to be a Finger Lakes Flu going around! I know how you feel…if I lived close enough to my parents that I could be there every day to turn out, feed, and muck, I would talk them into letting me pick up a pasture puff or two and stick them in their corral (the barn’s not in the greatest shape, but the grass is great and they’ve got five acres fenced with five-strand electrobraid and nary a horse in sight…)
And I’ve sent msj the amount of my contribution…come on, COTH, let’s pull off another miracle for Patriot.
If we strike out with Patriot, I will be happy if my contribution goes to spring someone else, such as Midnight Secret. I know he is free but msj can use the money to get him a vet visit, farrier, blanket, whatever.
msj…YOU are wonderful!! This is what the holiday season is all about!! Sending some jingles out for Cookie…here is hoping he is the classic gentleman we believe him to be and that his leg is not in horrible shape. For anyone whose first choice is purchased by someone else, PLEASE keep looking! There are 3 pages of really nice horses; some of those that were listed early are probably getting overlooked.
This enthusiasm to place Karakorum Patriot with msj is so heartwarming. COTHers are the greatest!
But, I want you all to consider something. By meeting this trainer’s demands, you are encouraging him to hold out for “his” price on any horse he may list in the future.
In the meantime, there are so many trainers at the track who are trying so very hard to find good homes for their horses that they are offering them at greatly reduced prices, or free. These horses are just as deserving as KP.
I’m thinking, in particular, about that old campaigner Midnight Secret. Or, if not him, a horse like Natty Meboy, or Carr Ride, who is said by everyone to be an extremely gentle animal, which would be great for msj.
I’m probably in the minority, but it really worries me that the “good guys” are, in this case, being ignored.
danceronice-- Haha I think(/hope!!) that you are thinking of The Rock can Roll, as I’ve been pursuing Rock and Roll Roan pretty adamantly for over a week now. Seeing as how the two are half-brothers, I was planning on grabbing The Rock can Roll too if he was somehow left without a home when the meet ended Fortunately, that won’t be necessary now
Very good point Louise! I totally agree.
You’ve got a very good point there Louise…
I am just afraid he is serious about the Puerto Rico angle. Anyone know this guy? Does he send horses down south?
Wow, I just saw “Take Me Flying” (what a cute name!) and he is a shortie but a CUTIE!! Look at his pedigree…WOW!!! Great one for a sport horse (sound, brave, jumping)!
