Finger Lake Race Track -- End of the Season -- Many New Homes -- Warmest Thanks

Plain brown wrapper but…

…any horse described as a “good citizen” deserves a shot.

Lawndart weren’t you looking for a small-ish, quiet gelding?

Those plain jane horses under 15.2hh don’t attract much attention but at the end of the day sometimes they are the real gems!

I am so, so excited to come here and read about all the horses finding homes with COTHers. This year I am not able to help like I am used to helping. It frustrates me and frankly irritates the he** out of me. It’s wonderful to come here and be cheered by all the placements being made. Thanks COTHers!

Karakorum Patriot - going to Old Friends!

Hi all - been lurking and working to help out with Karakorum Patriot from Saratoga County.

Great news!! - I spoke with Michael Blowen at Old Friends Equine in KY this morning. They have offered a home for Karakorum Patriot at the new satellite in Saratoga County to retire - Old Friends at Cabin Creek: The Bobby Frankel Division.

More good news - We’re most of the way on the fundraising to retire KP. The breeder has generously donated part of it. We’re hoping Karakorum Racing can help, too.

Will post a link for a tax-deductible contribution - any help would be appreciated. It’s been a big effort by a # of great people from FL to NY to put this together in short time. The Puerto Rico threat by the owner / trainer seems real, fair or not after all KPs hard work … so we play the ransom game & save a deserving, hard-working horse from a one-way trip.

We are thrilled that KP has this generous invitation to join the Old Friends Equine family. Cabin Creek owners Joanne & Mark Pepper are simply grand people. More later & thank you all!

Foundationmare–that’s good news from KP’s breeder! MSJ, did you contact Karakorum Racing? If not you might want to mention his breeder may chip in to get him a home. (I’m kind of hoping at the very least they might drop a mention in the trainer’s direction that they really don’t think the horse has anything left and it’s a bit much to be holding him for ransom.)

I understand where people are coming from, not wanting to support a trainer who’s got questionable pricing while there are those ready to give horses away, but on the other hand I understand these guys (and gals) ARE in business, and they have other horses to feed, so it may not always be possible to let one go for nothing. And while I certianly know you can’t save 'em all, I figure if you can save ONE…

ETA: GREAT NEWS! And I would still be willing to also chip in for FLTAP to take another oldster if it’s possible, too.

That’s wonderful news!! I am so happy for Cookie!

KP

Agreed, eventually it’s about saving a horse, even with the ransom - threatening to send them to the islands to race - that’s about the worst thing that could happen to a horse and everybody knows it.

For KP it’s a win-win day. He’s a good boy and needed to be retired. The breeder - Rainbow Stable’s Richard Swirn - was really generous in his donation. So KP will be retired, and we can still help some others! Thanks everyone, for all you do.

What incredible, wonderful news! I am so very, very happy and relieved. Mr. Zwirm is, indeed, a generous and caring individual. I will personally be in touch with him and give him thanks as well.

In this season of giving, peace and benevolence, it is apparent that there are angels among us. Thank you.

I’m crying, just sitting here at work crying. You guys are so wonderful. Just so wonderful. Give that Mr. Swirm guy a great big hug from this old lady please! (and the Peppers too)!

WAHOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Wonderful news re KP

but, if he is going to Old Friends, how much is still needed, since I suppose msj’s donation will go to another deserving oldie (hint?).

I really hope everything works out for the best for KP and all the other horses.

That is, truly, wonderful news. Not only does it assure KP a great new home at Old Friends, but, it doesn’t give the owner the idea that he can hold any horse he wants for ransom. KP is getting a home mostly because of who he is. The where he was going doesn’t really figure into it.

Once again, I am blown away by what COTHers can do, if they set their minds to it. Thank you so much spa4horses, for all of your hard work behind the scenes, and foundationmare and danceronice deserve credit also. To Mr Zwirm and the Karokorum Syndicate, also, go the deepest thanks of the Finger Lakes Trainer’s Listings Volunteers.

Now, let’s see what we can do with Midnight Secret.

When appropriate, can you post Mr. Zwirm’s mail address and Karakorum’s so we could individually send thank you notes?

I think it helps to let the folks who step up responsibly know how much that means to fans of racing.

thank you, spa4horses, for all your work. you are a OTTB angel!

This is all good news today!

Please let me know where to send my Patriot donation (to be used for him or another needy one)…

It’s a tribute to my recently acquiring Nightintheslammer who was kindly given to me by his trainer at Finger Lakes! He is a nice man who knew the time was right to retire him…

WOW!!! I’m glad I came here before making anymore calls. I’ve read everyone’s comments from Louise with the trainer “holding the horse as ransom” and considering other horses from, quite possibly, more deserving trainers and everyones comments. This is a wonderful offer from Old Friends at Cabin Creek: The Bobby Frankel Division. Well I don’t know what to say except that there really is a angel looking over all of us, including our animals.

So far I have received emails from 4 people and a PM earlier from another person with donations for KP $225 and my original offer of $500 would still be there so I would imagine that should push the fundraiser at Old Friends over the edge easily. Actually if my $500 puts the fund over the top to get KP and help pay for shipping then the other people can donate to a fund at FLTAP or whatever works for them.

I’ve just talked to Missy about KP and mentioned to her about the offer from Old Friends at Cabin Creek: The Bobby Frankel Division but said I’d still like to come look at the guy so I will head over to the track tomorrow to see him and tell him he’s probably going to get the best retirement home possible. One thing for certain is that Missy is great to talk with and agrees the horse has done his thing and should be retired.

I’ve actually called my vet’s office to let them know I’d used them as a reference and asked them to consider even a $5 donation and was planning on hitting up a few friends but I kinda don’t think that’s necessary.

I haven’t contacted Karakorum Racing but will do so when I’ve finished here and let them know the fantastic offer from Old Friends at Cabin Creek: The Bobby Frankel Division. Perhaps they might be willing to add a few dollars as well.

COTH members and lurkers (spa4horses) are the greatest.

I’m going to presume that everyone here at COTH that were willing to donate to KP coming to my farm will be as happy as I am about KP heading to Saratoga County. I can’t imagine why this would not come to fruition.

******* Most newsworthy to note is that when I talked to Missy, she did say they would have all their horses out by Sunday.****************

spa4horses - can someone arrange for trailering for KP that soon? Also, the only contact phone number I have for KP is Missy and her # is 585-733-0821. I would guess you would need to contact her. And will Old Friends be able to take him that soon? Those are probably the most important things to get done right away. If you can post information about where to send checks for the KP fundraising, I’ll get my check in the mail to all of you immediately.

OK, I’m off to contact Karakorum Racing - Josh probably as that’s who danceronice has mentioned in her posts.

THANK ALL OF YOU!!!  :)

I’ve been crying since yesterday so you’re not alone.

I think was Fat Dinah that suggested a written thank you to Mr. Zwirm and another HUGE thank you to Old Friends at Cabin Creek: The Bobby Frankel Division.

Who knows, maybe the trainer will feel a bit of guilt for wanting so much money for a horse that everyone thinks deserves to be retired!
I can dream, can’t I?

KP’s retirement had everything to do with the PR threat - it got everybody riled up and on board overnight - literally - phone lines and emails. The fact that he’d earned $350K and could wind up in a ghastly situation was an opportunity for the industry to return some of his earnings and show they have a heart.

KP’s story educated more folks about the scene in the islands and the moral blackmail that these ransoms are. I hope the awareness will lift all ships … 'cause every one of these horses is a million dollar winner in his or her own right … and in our hearts. !!

I think stories like this do help - Old Friends really grew when Ferdinand was lost, and that growth means they are able to retire unknown horses, too.

I keep hearing - we can’t save them all - and I add, “YET!”

If anyone is going to be by the track soon, could they measure Take Me Flying and Silent Refection for me? I really want to take one of them home but my husband is hesitant due to their small size (doesn’t bother me, i just want them here!). He knows that taller horses are easier as resales if we end up selling them as event prospects.

(plus we got burned once with one who was VERY misrepresented. He was 14.2 not 15.2!).

WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!

Congrats to Cookie and all who have worked to get him placed!!!

I was one of those that offered to donate money to msj, so keep us posted on where to send it…
